Spotlight On:

National Fentanyl Awareness Day

May is Mental Health Month, and one of the leading causes of substance misuse disorders is an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness. Teens and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, or bipolar personality disorder are just some of those more likely to form a substance use disorder to cope.

Teens are especially at risk, since many mental health disorders can become a forefront issue during puberty and early adolescence.

A substance use disorder has the potential to cause more permanent harm today than in the past, and one of the reasons is the high rate of substances that include fentanyl. Fentanyl is a substance proven to be lethal in terrifyingly small doses.

As Dr. Scott Hadland points out, the cause of fentanyl overdoses is overwhelmingly the purchase of counterfeit pills designed to look like the prescription medication, but instead contain a lethal amount of fentanyl. Thankfully, fentanyl test strips are available. Learn more about how to use fentanyl test strips and where you can find them on the Department of Health Services' website.

Talking about mental health illnesses and symptoms, normalizing seeking support, and having tough conversations are just some of the ways we can find support. Representation in the media, access to community trainings and workplace-sponsored workshops are all important ways to help shed a light and inspire hope for those struggling and in pain.

Anyone is at risk for experiencing mental health issues, no matter their age, gender or race. Download Community Advocates' Mental Health Resource Guide here.

If you, or someone you know, is dealing with feelings of hopelessness, fear, anxiety or other symptoms of mental illness, you deserve respect and care. If you or someone you know needs help, call 211 or 988 for immediate care via phone or text.

If you are not in crisis today, but may have need of this information for work, for a friend, family member or neighbor, make sure it is accessible and saved somewhere visible. A sticky note on the fridge, microwave, a recurring reminder in a digital or physical calendar or a magnet for your car or fridge. No one is undeserving of confidential and professional care.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month

This month is a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asia and Pacific Islands encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

Like most commemorative months, Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month originated with Congress in 1992. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People

The Trevor Project’s 2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People amplifies the experiences of more than 28,000 LGBTQ young people ages 13 to 24 across the United States. This survey gives a voice to LGBTQ young people — at a time when their existence is unfairly at the center of national political debates and state legislatures have introduced and implemented a record number of anti-LGBTQ policies.

For the fifth consecutive year, these data underscore that anti-LGBTQ victimization contributes to the higher rates of suicide risk reported by LGBTQ young people and that most who want mental health care are unable to get it.
