Blessing of the Animals TODAY

At 10:00 am

Please bring your pet (all God's creatures welcomed!) whether it be furry, feathery, scaly or slimy for a blessing this Saturday morning, October 3, at 10:00 am in the parking lot.

The event is held in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of animals. Francis considered all nature as the mirror of God and as so many steps to God.

From Father Jonathan +

We are called to be a blessing

Many years ago, a nun I knew told a story about a time when she participated in a convent exchange (Yes, they do those). She had spent a month in a small village on Scotland’s northern coast. The village and convent sat directly on the North Sea. The setting was beautiful. While she was there, she took daily walks along the shore and through the village.

As she walked, she would say short prayers of blessing for everything she saw, be it the ocean or a house. She attempted to move through the world as a blessing to everything around her. Her attitude and actions are the embodiment of what we remember with St. Francis.

This weekend we celebrate St. Francis. We will bless animals, but this isn’t just about blessing animals. We take time to consider how we might move through the world as a blessing. Ask yourself, “Do I bless the world as I move through it, or is the world happy to see the back of me?” The Bible tells us God’s redemptive work includes not only us but all of creation. As we remember St. Francis, we remember this too.

Come and get your animals blessed, but never forget that you too are called to be a blessing, a blessing to your pets, your neighbors, and all of creation. Strive to be that blessing.

Stewardship Kickoff this Sunday

Pick-up your Stewardship Packet

Tomorrow we begin our season of stewardship.

Our church’s traditional service has an invocation that sums up what stewardship is all about. As we ask God to bless the weekly offering, we say, “All things come from thee O’ God, and of thine own have we given thee.”

All that we have comes from God, and that has implications for our lives. Stewardship has two pieces to it. What can we give, and how do we use it? If what we have comes from God, then we shouldn’t be needlessly wasteful or frivolous with what we’ve been given. We also give a small portion of what God has given us back to God through the church. That is stewardship in a nutshell, being a good steward with what we have been given.

This time of year, we seek to reflect on what we can give, and ask, “What should we be doing with what we have?” These are the questions we explore this stewardship season.

What is Pledging?

A question that often comes up during stewardship season is “What is pledging?” I understand. It is not something familiar to most people. The Episcopal church is one of the only churches that handles stewardship in this particular way.

Our church comes from the English, a people not known for spontaneity or freewheeling. Many churches simply go plate to plate weekly for their budgets, with a huge, unplanned rush of giving at the end of the fiscal year for tax reasons. Our church, likely due to its English roots, seeks to make things more predictable.

We pick a particular time of year and then we encourage people to ask, “What can I give over the year?” Now, people are by no means trapped by this. People can and do increase and decrease their pledges all the time. The purpose of pledging is to add intentionality both for the individual and the church itself. It takes most of the unpredictability out of the equation.

Sometime this stewardship season, consider what you can pledge, and share that plan with the church.

Strategic Planning Listening Sessions scheduled this month by the Diocese

Click below to Register to participate

As we look toward the future of our diocese, we want to take the time to listen, learn, and discern together where God may be calling us. Building the future of our diocese is a shared effort, and your voice and experience within The Diocese of West Missouri is an important part of that process.

That is why The Diocese of West Missouri is inviting you to take part in one of our listening sessions. These listening sessions are a time for you to provide feedback and valuable insight that will help shape our strategic plan for the diocese. The Strategic Planning Committee will ask questions and gauge participation as we ramp up to revitalization for our diocese.

The first listening session will be held over Zoom on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 am. The second Zoom listening session will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 pm.

There are only 45 slots available for each listening session, so register through Zoom today to make sure your voice is heard.

What is Bible Study?

Why do we do it?

Our church’s catechism gives a good answer to these questions.

Q. Why do we call the Holy Scriptures the Word of God?

A. We call them the Word of God because God inspired their human authors and because God still speaks to us through the Bible.

Q. How do we understand the meaning of the Bible?

A. We understand the meaning of the Bible by the help of the Holy Spirit, who guides the Church in the true interpretation of the Scriptures.

We believe God still speaks to us today. A key part of Christian life is seeking out what God is saying to us. The main way we do that is through scripture, the Word of God. How do we understand what the scripture means? We understand it by the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit in the gathered church. That means if we want to know what God is saying to us, we need to read the Bible, and we need to explore it together with others, guided by the Holy Spirit. That’s what Bible Study is all about! Come and join us Wednesdays at 1 as we seek to do exactly that.
