Week of January 3 - 10, 2020
"It's time to unfold new pages and
start a new chapter in your life
because it's a New Year!"

Dear Southern Door Community,
The month of January brings a new year and new beginnings. It is an especially significant time of year for me as eight years ago on January 2nd, I began my first day as Superintendent —providing me with an opportunity to give back to my “home” community as a graduate of Southern Door High School. It truly has been a pleasure and rewarding experience to continue my service and educational journey working with such a dedicated team!

Here’s to a great start of the 2020 year—celebrating all the great things that define us, acknowledging each other’s efforts, rising up to meet our challenges, inspiring those around us to reach their personal bests, and continuing our reputation of Southern Door being Eagle Proud, Eagle Strong, and a great place to educate children!

LACROSSE EARNS SAE GRANT AWARD
Congratulations to Sophomore, Chloe LaCrosse on being awarded a $1,000 State Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Grant for her Dairy Entrepreneurship SAE project from the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. Chloe will be using the money to buy a calf that has a great genetic background and will enhance the herd of registered Holsteins that she has been developing over the past year. She is the daughter of Jeremy and Tracy LaCrosse.

Successful candidates had to complete a five page application explaining their SAE program, how much funding they needed, the expected use of those funds, and future goals with their SAE as well as their service in FFA and other school activities.
OUIMETTE NAMED PERSON OF THE YEAR Congratulations to George Ouimette, one of Door County’s Eight People of the Year (reprinted from Green Bay Press Gazette)

[For seven or eight periods every weekday, teachers see hordes of students with their own needs and lives. Despite seeing new faces every hour, a colleague of George Ouimette, a Southern Door High School art teacher, noticed he takes time for every student and offers guidance beyond artwork.
Ouimette builds the sets for Southern Door's annual musical, a huge production drawing large audiences. "He does it to make sure students feel good about (the show)," said Jamie Lynn Teska, a fellow Southern Door teacher who nominated Ouimette. But this year, Teska had a front row seat to the work he does beyond school walls. She's a single mother to her daughter, a singer-songwriter planning on studying music after she graduates from Southern Door this spring. Ouimette helped her create album cover art, and find schools that fit her needs, working with her to apply for scholarships.

Teska's daughter, Jadacey, recently released her first album under Ouimette's mentorship. But she's not the only student Ouimette has impacted.

"I've had the luxury of watching him do this with countless kids," Teska said. "He steps in to help out as best as he can. The kids are never rushed with him, never."]
FOURTH GRADERS GRADUATE FROM CORE MATTERS PROGRAM
"I have personally observed growth in the students as they progressed through the curriculum reciting and demonstrating the code of conduct each day. I have built strong, lasting relationships interacting with the students throughout the course and feel they have learned the tools and skills necessary to make good decisions by solving problems peacefully, respecting others, and promoting a positive school environment.

It is very fulfilling and a pleasure to be a part of the COREMatters Program and I look forward to teaching this course with the 5th grade class next year! Sincerely, Southern Door School Resource Officer Medlen.
APPRENTICESHIP MEETING FOR ALL SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, AND PARENTS
Monday, January 6, 2019 at 6:30pm in the auditorium
The Ahnapee Regional Youth Apprenticeship Consortium, which includes Luxemburg-Casco, Kewaunee, and all of Door County High Schools, welcomes you to learn more about the Youth Apprenticeship Program being offered starting in the 2020-2021 academic school year. This program is an option available to students during their junior and senior year. The Youth Apprenticeship Program is a student driven program that combines classroom instruction with work-based learning.

While participating in the program, students take high school academic courses to meet graduation requirements and work in a job related to their Youth Apprenticeship program area. Students are supervised/mentored in their work experience by an employer and have close interaction with the Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator and School Based counselors to expand their employability skills and position the students to be college, career and community ready.
