As we noted a few months ago, the IRS is continuing to move toward paperless processes. As of September 30, the federal government will no longer issue paper checks to individuals but will issue refunds by direct deposit, prepaid cards, or other digital options. Eventually, it will stop accepting paper checks for payments as well, but for now, you can still mail in payments. The address for these may have changed; however, if you've already mailed in payments, they will be forwarded.
The IRS is mainly focused on the transition to electronic payments for tax year 2025, including obtaining banking information on tax forms for making direct deposits to businesses. In anticipation of these changes, here are the options for paying electronically:
-
IRS Direct Pay - pay online from a checking or savings account (no fee and no sign-in required)
-
IRS Online (ID.me) - must verify identity to create an account, can use for other government partners and forms, check refunds and notices, provide POA
-
IRS2Go Mobile App - download for access to refund status, making payments, tax help
