- The Nasdaq 100 fell more than 1% every session last week. Since last Monday was a holiday it does not count as a full week, but the historical precedent is not a good one. A full week of large down days has not happened since September 2001. Back then the Nasdaq went on the fall another 28%. The Nasdaq is currently on track to experience its worst month since 2008, with the index down nearly 12% already.
- Last week Microsoft announced it will purchase video game maker Activision Blizzard. At a cost of $69 billion, this will be the largest tech deal in history. Yet, the deal cost is not too concerning to Microsoft investors. The deal is less than 3% of the market cap of Microsoft, who is sitting on $137 billion in cash and will generate another $50 billion this year from the video game purchase.
- Since its peak in November Bitcoin has lost over 45% of its value. This decline has wiped out over $600 billion in market value in Bitcoin while over $1 trillion has been lost in the aggregate crypto market. The rapid decline might be a result from investors de-risking their portfolios in the expectation of higher interest rates.
- Investors have lost their appetite for SPACs, which had raised $160 billion in 2021. Last month only 3 SPAC deals were announced. This may be due to the fact the stock of half of the companies that completed SPAC deals in the last two years are down 40% of more from their starting price of $10.
