A Storybook Ending:
Shrek Leaves a Lasting Legacy in District 7
| | |
Our students have taken their final bow and the curtain has closed, but the magic of Shrek the Musical will live on in District 7 for years to come.
This monumental production brought together more than 200 student actors, musicians, and stage crew members in our world-class District 7 Fine Arts Center, supported by countless staff, parents, and community partners. Together, we made history with one of the most stunning, vibrant, and meaningful productions ever staged in District 7.
At its heart, Shrek reminds us that our differences are our strengths — that true beauty lies in embracing who we are and celebrating each other. This message came to life in every performance, both on stage and behind the scenes, as our students showcased the incredible diversity of talents, backgrounds, and dreams that make our D7 family so special.
Director and choreographer Caroline Pruitt, who partners with musical director Kimberly Colon as visionaries behind our district musicals, reflected on the spirit of this year's production, sharing, "It was our priority to ensure every student had access to this experience — whether as part of the cast and crew or as an audience member. Our goal was to create a place for every voice to be heard and every talent to shine.”
Now in its 14th year, our annual districtwide musical has grown into a program that is celebrated across the state and beyond — a shining example of how District 7 continues Going for Great in the arts, in education, and in community spirit. We are deeply grateful to our parents, staff, and community partners for their unwavering support and dedication to our students.
The story of Shrek reminds us that with courage, heart, and a little imagination, even a swamp can turn into something magical — and here in D7, we believe the same about every student's future.

Elementary Excellence:
D7’s Young Performers Light Up the Stage
| | |
Musical theater was also alive and thriving across our elementary schools this spring, bringing audiences to their feet and lighting up the stage with incredible talent and creativity! Below are just a few highlights from an unforgettable season of performances: Jesse Boyd’s Aristocats Kids, Cleveland’s Finding Nemo Kids, Mary Wright’s Willy Wonka Jr., Pine Street’s Aladdin Jr., and EP Todd’s Into the Woods.
Our young performers left it all on the stage – the energy, heart, and dedication they poured into these productions was truly inspiring. District 7 is grateful to the teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make these beautiful experiences possible for our students.
The magic of musical theater creates memories that last a lifetime — and for many of our young stars, these productions are just the beginning. In District 7, it’s clear: stars are born on our stage!
| | Meet Dr. Greenfield: District 7’s AI Trailblazer! | | |
District 7 is leading the way into the future — and we’ve got the perfect guide lighting the path. Dr. Wanda Greenfield, our very own Director of Instructional Technology, has been selected for GenerationAI, a national groundbreaking initiative from Google focused on bringing artificial intelligence education to K-12 schools across the country.
Chosen from hundreds of applicants nationwide, Dr. Greenfield will join a powerhouse cohort of educators from 38 states, all working together to help students navigate an AI-powered world. Over the next 15 months, she’ll collaborate with national leaders, develop real-world solutions for schools, and bring back innovative strategies to District 7.
“This opportunity gives me the tools and connections to help ensure our students are equipped to use AI efficiently, effectively, and responsibly,” said Dr. Greenfield. “GenerationAI is helping me explore what students really need to thrive in a connected, tech-driven world—and that learning starts right here in Spartanburg.”
GenerationAI is part of Google’s $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, and aims to train one million Americans in AI. The program’s focus on equity and innovation perfectly aligns with D7’s commitment to prepare every student to be college- or career-ready.
So if you see Dr. Greenfield in your school, know that she’s not just supporting your tech—she’s helping shape the future of learning. And it’s a future D7 is proud to be leading.
| | 7th Grade English Students Give TED Talks | | In a display of student creativity and critical thinking, our 7th graders at McCracken recently gave TED talks centered around the thought-provoking novel, The Giver. TED talks, known for their engaging and succinct presentations, inspired students to express their insights on how the society in the book first appears to be utopian but is revealed as actually being dystopian as the story progresses. Throughout this innovative project, each student delved deep into the book's complex themes, enabling them to articulate and defend their interpretations while honing their public speaking skills. The hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the narrative while building confidence in presenting ideas, making literature not just a subject to read, but a platform for conversation and exploration. Classmates, teachers and district staff were thrilled to serve as the audience for our students as they shared their perspectives on this classic novel. | | REMINDER: 2025-2026 Student Enrollment is Open | | |

We enjoyed celebrating the incredible individuals who keep our schools thriving—from the front office to the front of the classroom. We recognized our outstanding teachers, librarians, school nurses, APs and administrative assistants—each one a vital part of our D7 family. These professionals show up every day with dedication, care, and purpose, and we are grateful for the many ways they support our students and one another.
Last week, our entire community joined together to honor ALL of our incredible educators and staff members who make our schools shine. From classroom teachers and office staff to bus drivers and cafeteria teams, every role plays a vital part in supporting our students. We loved seeing so many smiles, surprises, and heartfelt thank-yous shared across our schools. As part of our D7 tradition, we ended the week with a gift from the district for all employees—and this year’s reveal came with a twist! Members of our senior leadership team joined forces to create a lighthearted video message to wrap up the week with laughter and appreciation. (If you have never seen Dr. Terry Pruitt ride a tricycle, don't miss your chance!)
Take a look at the video below for our fun, feel-good tribute. We hope it reminds each employee of just how valued you are—not only during Teacher Appreciation Week, but all year long.

Career Day at McCracken Middle was an exciting and enriching experience for students, who had the opportunity to learn from a wide range of professionals—including a forensic specialist, firefighter, realtor, artist, therapist, vet tech, athletic trainers, and more!
A huge thank you goes to Lisa Kerns, MMS’s incredible Career Specialist, for organizing such a meaningful event. We also appreciate the support of our PTO, who helped with several key aspects of the day, and our school administration for providing lunch to our guest professionals.
One of the day’s highlights came from featured presenter and D7 parent Genevieve Strickland, who, along with her student helpers, is creating a lasting gift to the school—a beautiful new mural on campus! It’s inspiring to see our students not only learning about careers but also giving back to their school in creative and impactful ways.
Planning is already underway for next year’s event, so if you're interested in being part of McCracken’s 2026 Career Day, they’d love to hear from you!
