After a whirlwind of activity in Dover, the FY2020 budget has been passed and signed. With it comes word that the General Assembly and Carney administration continue their support of the arts, recognizing the impact the arts have in advancing the Governor’s priorities: strengthening Delaware’s economy, enhancing education for all Delaware children, and building strong communities.
With this ongoing support from the General Assembly, the Division is well positioned to implement a number of initiatives that will focus on Delaware’s youth, seniors, and underserved populations. Division staff will be working diligently throughout the summer to identify specific mechanisms to channel this support to organizations that can serve these populations through the arts.
But public funding is only one small part of what continues to make the arts thrive in Delaware. Organizations and artists alike value
YOUR input,
YOUR participation, and
YOUR financial support. The most powerful testament to the importance of the arts in our communities is community engagement.
The Division of the Arts is proud to partner with the
Division of Parks and Recreation and the
Division of Libraries throughout the summer to provide the best in entertainment for children and adults alike. In between swims, hikes, and mowing the lawn, check out what’s happening near you. From Stango Park in Lewes to White Clay Creek State Park, there are plenty of free, family-oriented programs to take advantage of!

Emerging Fellow, Visual Arts: Crafts
|
Kaitlyn Evans originally worked almost entirely on a small scale, obscuring glossy, luminescent stones with pierced metal or translucent plastic covers that added a layer of mystery. But lately she has begun to lighten her palette and to create larger, more open pieces that generate emotional and physical weight.

One, an exhibition of paintings and photographs by Middletown artist Katie Lillard will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from July 5-26, 2019. The artist will host a free opening reception on Friday, July 12 from 5-7 p.m.
Lillard explores procreation and the female experience of childbearing through multi-media sculpture, film, and installation. A mother herself, Lillard balances time in the studio with raising her child and working as a high school art teacher in Centreville, MD. Her work, which has always been rooted in the human life cycle, looks specifically to motherhood for clues to our interconnectivity as a civilization and species.
Lillard’s training in painting as an undergraduate student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts has influenced her formal aesthetic, which she pairs with upcycled materials and found objects.
|
|
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the
Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.
|
|
Visitors to the Gallery should enter via the main doors on 9th and French Streets.
