HV Power Wellington Office to relocate

It’s approaching 20 years since HV Power first opened its Wellington office in Kilbirnie. At the end of this month, we relocate to Tawa. The new HV Power office location will be at

1 Lincoln Ave

Tawa, Wellington 5028

Postal address will change to

PO Box 56-045, Wellington 5249

The contact phone number (64 4 387 7339) and email for Warwick remain the same. The fax number is no longer being used.

When you want to visit us, HV Power’s new office will be located within Nichecom’s facility, a well-known test equipment sales, calibration, and repair facility. We’ll let you know more about that relationship next month.

SIPROTEC 5 Compact Universal 7SX800 to feature line differential protection

It’s nearly here! Towards the end of October, the SIPROTEC 5 Universal Relay 7SX800 series will support line differential protection. This will require DIGSI 5 V11 and firmware version 11.50.

The 7SX800 is a ‘compact’ version of the SIPROTEC 5 relays. It’s referred to as ‘Compact’ as it is half the width of the normal SIPROTEC 5 relays. (It uses the same cut-out as the 7SD600, 7SJ80/7SD80 series, so is the logical replacement for those relays.)

As DIGSI 5 is used, the 7SX800 relay supports the same useful SIPROTEC 5 features such as SIPROTEC Tools for commissioning, DigitalTwin etc, and can be part of SIPROTEC 5 projects.

The 7SX800 has been available as an overcurrent and frequency relay for a few years now, but this latest upgrade adds Line Differential. The good news is that it is a firmware upgrade, so existing 7SX800’s can have this functionality too.

To implement Line Differential 100 Function Points must be loaded and available in the relay.

To make this simple going forward, the 7SX800 can now be supplied with two unpopulated SFP cages (rather than both copper or fibre for redundant SCADA). One cage is now for the standard Ethernet communication Interface, the other for the new Protection Data Interface.

SFPs available include:

  • Ethernet Communications:
  • Copper RJ45
  • Optical LC 2km
  • Protection Data Interface
  • 24km direct FO connection
  • 2km direct FO connection, or via communication converters and multiplexors (available early 2027)

Some other nice features of the 7SX800 relay:

  • Colour LCD display with SLD support
  • 8 dual-colour LEDs
  • 1 or 5A CT inputs (software selectable)
  •  4 x VT inputs (30 Function points needed to use voltage-based functions)
  • Serial SCADA interface
  • Ethernet SCADA interface (with appropriate copper or fibre SFP fitted)
  • Universal power supply with 24-250Vdc and 100-230Vac operating range
  • Three hardware IO options:
  • 4 BI + 5 BO
  • 14 BI + 11 BO
  • 17 BI + 8 BO

(BI= binary inputs, BO = binary outputs):

In the initial release of Line Differential, the 7SX800 will only be able to ‘pair’ with another 7SX800.

HVP Services

HV Power have formed a new wholly owned company called ‘HVP Services Limited’. This start-up is being managed by Robel Hailu, with the intent for it to run the field support side of HV Power’s business. For example, managing Service Level Agreements for onsite/remote support of products and systems supplied by HV Power, and manging the required site inspections/support related to the installation and gas filling of larger switchgear.

A website is currently being built, but Robel can be contacted via

EEA 2026 and HV Power Open Day

Remember, if you are travelling to EEA in Auckland this year, please come up early and join us for our open day at our new Auckland facility. This is a great opportunity to have a first-hand look at the new building, the products we supply, and to meet some of our team.

We are officially opening our new building on 21 September 2026 (the afternoon prior to EEA). Come along any time from 10.30 am. We’ll do some (short) speeches and cut the ribbon at midday, followed by a BBQ.

If you’re interested, please RVSP to Sabrina (sabrinal@hvpowerautomation.com) so we can cater for you.
