Why Every School Day Counts

As we settle into the rhythm of the school year, we want to remind families that being at school consistently is one of the simplest ways to support student success.

Middle school students are learning much more than the content of their individual classes. They are developing independence, building relationships, practicing organization, and gaining confidence as learners. Because learning is connected from one day to the next, missing school can sometimes create gaps that are difficult for students to recognize or overcome.

When students are present regularly, they have more opportunities to participate in classroom discussions, complete learning activities, receive feedback from their teachers, connect with peers, and stay current with assignments. Just as importantly, consistent attendance helps students establish habits that will serve them well throughout high school and beyond.

A Few Numbers to Keep in Mind

Attendance patterns can have a significant impact over time:

  • Missing just two days of school each month can put a student on track to be considered chronically absent.
  • Middle school students who are chronically absent are more than twice as likely to fail a course compared with students who attend regularly.
  • Students who miss 10% or more of the school year are more likely to experience challenges with reading and math proficiency and face an increased risk of not graduating from high school.
  • Attendance matters even when a student is earning good grades. Frequent absences can create long-term challenges, making consistent school attendance an important factor in continued academic success.

We recognize that there are times when absences are necessary, particularly when students are sick. We also know that families have important commitments and opportunities throughout the year. When possible, we encourage families to plan vacations and other activities around the school calendar so students can maximize their time in the classroom.

Our goal is not simply to count days in attendance, it is to make sure our students have the time, relationships, instruction, and experiences they need to thrive. Thank you for partnering with us and helping your child make being at school a priority.

Every day matters. Every student matters.

Yours in service,

Kristin Higgins

School Safety Drills - Month of October

Each month, North Middle School practices state-required safety drills so students know exactly what to do in an emergency before one ever happens. This month, our drills will be: Fire (Evacuate) and Lockdown. Below are the details for this drill, and you'll get a similar notice at the start of each month covering that month's drills.

What: Fire Drill (Evacuate)

Who: ALL North Middle School students and staff

When: Week of October 12th

Why: Student emergency preparedness, and required under Wisconsin Statute 118.07

Duration: To minimize disruption to learning, fire drills only take between 5-10 minutes

Announcements: None - Strobe lights and fire alarm will sound

What: Lockdown

Who: ALL North Middle School students and staff

When: Week of October 19th

Why: Student emergency preparedness, and required under Wisconsin Statute 118.07.

Duration: This drill takes a little longer due to student attendance being taken in their classrooms. Total time will be approximately 15-20 minutes.

Announcements: “This is a drill. Lockdown. Locks, Lights, Out of Sight. This is a drill. Lockdown. Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.”

Parents - A lockdown drill is the time when we face the unfortunate reality that school violence is possible. Practicing drills, and lockdowns especially, can cause trauma if done incorrectly, or insensitively to student needs. We are NOT simulating a real school violence threat. We are NOT simulating weapon fire, surprise actors, or sensory props. This is strictly a time to review established best practices to keep our students safe, period.

This Monday, October 5th, is World Day of Bullying Prevention. Let’s kick off National Bullying Prevention Month by wearing a BLUE shirt to school on Monday!

When we wear blue, we join millions of students across the globe who are saying 'no' to bullying and 'yes' to kindness, respect, and inclusion. Let’s turn our hallways into a sea of blue this Monday to show that everyone belongs here.

Order your school portraits and yearbooks directly from VIP. School portraits will be mailed home and yearbooks will be handed out in June.
