First Day of School in East Bridgewater

It was the first day of school for East Bridgewater on August 31st. Students showed up with back-to-school clothes, new backpacks, and new attitudes for the upcoming school year. While the first few school days can be stressful, Morgan, our school therapy dog, was nearby to settle the butterflies.

Historical Tidbit:

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to earn a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories, and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities, and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, first appearing in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in industrial centers nationwide, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when in June 1894, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, to add more power to a strike. It crippled railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.

In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

You have a Say in a New Massachusetts Seal & Flag.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts's is changing its flag state seal and motto.

The current state seal has been in place since 1898. It depicts a Native American standing under an arm wielding a sword, accompanied by the Latin motto: “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."

A state commission in collaboration with UMass Boston sent out a survey for public input. All MA residents are encouraged to participate. The committee want the flag to be a representation of the citizens of MA. A final recommendation will be given to the commission in late November. Now is the time to give your input! to fill out the survey. To fill out the survey go to UMass Boston's Website.

For more information go to the Town of East Bridgewater's website.

Putt's Canon

In 1974, industrious EB residents Ron Putt, Bruce Beaman, Bill Scott and Wayne Johnson sought to commemorate the country’s bicentennial by joining the Olde Bridgewater Minuteman Company and creating their own cannon. Ron Putt machined the barrel out of a piece of steel and the four of them hammered the wheels into place on the 300 lb cannon. Ron then became licensed by the state fire marshal to be a Competent Operator of Cannon and Mortar. This allowed them to shoot off black powder (no cannonball) in East Bridgewater with the fire chief's permission. In the mid - 1980’s, that included touchdowns at Viking Football games. Ron and company also traveled with the cannon for re-enactments and events, including weddings. Now that’s starting off things with a bang!
In 2023, no longer wanting the responsibility of owning a cannon, Ron contacted the Patriots Football Team and asked if he might donate his homemade firepower. Recently, to his delight, the Patriots picked up EB’s Bicentennial cannon. We are waiting to hear while they consider the perfect place for Ron’s Cannon with a plaque commemorating the team that brought re-enactments to life: Ron Putt, Bruce Beaman, Bill Scott and Wayne Johnson. Here's a salute to East Bridgewater’s sons!
