Message from the President
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024, and ECF’s 78th year of service! I hope all of you enjoyed a warm and wonderful holiday with friends and family.
Thanks to so many of you in our extended ECF family who contributed to our Holiday Toy Drive, every one of the young children and students in our Early Start program and Kayne Eras School received a toy for the holiday! Many of them otherwise may have had none. It is a privilege to share with you the smiles on the children’s faces in this month’s issue of ECF IMPACT.

|
|
I also want to thank all our friends who contributed to the ECF Year-End Campaign, helping to ensure that we can continue to innovate, inspire, and provide life-changing programs and services for the children and adults with special needs that rely on us.
Each new year provides new opportunities to transform lives—to provide critical assessments and interventions for developmentally delayed toddlers—to rescue struggling students with skilled support that inspires new paths to learning and achievement—to provide training, coaching, and pathways to independence and fulfillment for adults to realize their goals and contribute their unique abilities.
As 2024 kicks off, we have launched our new 3-year Strategic Plan, created to establish the goals and objectives, strategies and tactics that will advance our mission and ongoing impact. Our administrative team, Board of Directors, staff and community partners are excited to work together collaboratively in implementing innovative initiatives and new opportunities on behalf of the clients we serve.
In our 78th year of service we embrace with gratitude the excellence, commitment and compassion that founded this organization, and that stewards and secures our future.
With best wishes to all of you for an exceptional New Year,

Veronica Arteaga, LCSW
President & CEO

ECF Mourns the Passing of our Longtime Supporter and Hollywood Celebrity Selma Archerd
A devoted mother and grandmother, Selma peacefully passed on December 14, 2023. Selma’s son Jimmy first came to Kayne Eras in 1991 and moved into ECF’s Keystone house in Culver City in 1992 – making him one of ECF’s longest residents.
| |
|
|
Selma was the loving wife of Variety columnist Army Archerd. Selma and Army were married for 39 years.
An avid supporter of ECF, Selma spearheaded Variety’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Army’s column “Just for Variety” to benefit the Exceptional Children’s Foundation. The event was attended by celebrities and people in the industry who wanted to support Army and Selma.
| | |
|
|
Selma was also on the committee for the 2007 “Coming Together” Gala when ECF and Kayne Eras joined forces to become the only agency to provide a life span of services.
Selma is survived by her sons Richard and James “Jimmy” Rosenblum and her grandson Ryan.
She was truly one of a kind; we will remember her beauty, her sense of humor, her class, and her love of her family. We are grateful for her kindness and generosity through the years.

Thank You for Spreading Holiday Joy!
ECF Supporters Provide Hundreds of Holiday Smiles for Children and Students with Special Needs
This past holiday season, hundreds of ECF children and their families enjoyed a spark of holiday magic served up by ECF supporters across Los Angeles County.
Donors to our Holiday Toy Drive ensured that every one of the young children and students in our Early Start program and Kayne Eras School received a gift—much to their excitement and joy!

|
|
At the school, students enjoyed choosing special toys from the Giving Room. Early Start families met Santa, received toys, and played together, with lots of smiles all around.
On behalf of all the children and families, our deepest thanks to all who purchased or provided toys, hosted toy drives in their communities and businesses, and made the holidays magical, including:

Celebrating the Holidays at ECF
| |
|
Children at Early Start Arleta along with their families had a special visitor from the North Pole during a holiday lunch and party at the center. Santa was also able to make a stop with his sleigh at the ECF Early Start Adams center, delivering gifts and joy to the children!
| |
Students at ECF Kayne Eras School were wide-eyed and grinning ear-to-ear as they chose from a selection of donated toys ranging from stuffed animals to guitars in the school's annual Holiday Gift Room. Each student also selected books donated by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation.
The annual Holiday Party at ECF’s Exceptional Building commenced with a bang and a band on Tuesday, December 19. As usual, there was a lot of excitement, and everyone brought their party mood and dancing shoes. The band played a variety of music from Johnny Cash to holiday carols and was a big hit with participants of our Exceptional Works and Art Centers programs!
