FOM Concert Series Opens Oct. 24!

Dock Anderson, Director of Music

Our new Friends of Music Concert Series is about to begin, and I couldn't be more excited about our opening concert!

On Saturday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m., we'll welcome the Joe Alterman Trio to Bishop Commons for an evening of outstanding jazz. Joe is a remarkable Atlanta-based pianist whose infectious enthusiasm, extraordinary musicianship, and engaging personality have made him a favorite with audiences across the country. Rooted in the great traditions of jazz, his playing is full of warmth, energy, and joy. The trio will also be joined by a special guest vocalist, making the evening even more exciting!

One of our goals for the Friends of Music series is to bring exceptional musical experiences to Holy Innocents and the wider community, offering opportunities to gather, connect, and enjoy music together. This promises to be a wonderful beginning to what I hope will become a cherished tradition in the life of our parish.

The concert is free and open to everyone, so please invite your friends, neighbors, and family members. We'll also have a reception with wine, cheese, and refreshments, giving everyone a chance to visit and enjoy one another's company.

Please take a moment to sign up if you plan to attend! While there is no admission charge, having an idea of how many people to expect will help us prepare enough refreshments for everyone. And if you're bringing guests, please include them in your count.

I hope you'll join us for a terrific evening of music and fellowship as we launch this exciting new chapter in the musical life of Holy Innocents. I look forward to seeing you there!

Joe Alterman Jazz Trio

October 24, 7:00-8:30 PM

Settle in for an evening of live jazz, wine, and cheese in Bishop Commons with Atlanta jazz pianist Joe Alterman. Known for bringing swing, soul, and an unmistakable sense of joy to the piano, Alterman is a longtime mentee of jazz greats Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis, carrying forward their groove-filled, life-affirming approach while bringing a musical voice all his own. McCann called him “a giant,” while Ahmad Jamal hailed him as “a very special artist.”

Alterman has released eight critically acclaimed albums and performed at celebrated venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland, and the Blue Note. His work also appears on two Grammy Award-winning projects, and his collaborators have ranged from jazz legends to Atlanta music icon Dallas Austin.

Beyond the stage, Alterman is a writer, interviewer, and host and producer of The Upside of Jazz on WABE 90.1, where he explores the music, people, and stories that have shaped jazz. At the heart of it all is his piano—joyful, swinging, and alive.

The book recounts a sweeping love story with the pace and twists of a thriller. Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives.
