Late Summer / Early Fall 2025

The summer in review

The summer months are typically less active in church communities, but this year was definitely the exception for St. Agnes'.

On the Day of Pentecost, June 8th, our extended church family gathered for a festival service.

The service included the blessing and dedication of our new red sanctuary set.

The frontal, burse and veil was dedicated to the glory of God and in living memory of Steve Pearson.

The stole and chasuble were blessed and dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of Linda Hutton.

We had a full house for the service and for a meal afterward in the parish hall.

The next Sunday, June 15th, on Trinity Sunday, we made time during the service to bless and commemorate Patricia Underwood.

Members of Pat's family joined us for worship where we blessed and dedicated an icon of the Holy Trinity written by Pat and gifted to St. Agnes' in 2015.

Pat's family also asked that two prayer shawls be blessed and sent to Dr. and Mrs. Jere Creed in Chattanooga.

We served another delicious meal in the parish hall and shared our memories of Pat. We will forever treasure her friendship!

On May 17th, our extended church family joined with the larger community to bless and remember our very dear friend Mrs. Kathleen Black.

We provided a Christian burial service as well as a graveside prayer service followed by a meal in the parish hall.

Kathleen's impact on the congregation at St. Agnes' cannot be measured. Kathleen, along with Gene and Alice, played a pivotal role in helping revive the congregation in the early 1990's when it was rumored to be closing.

Kathleen led efforts to freshen the look of the altar with flowers and adornments.

We will never forget Kathleen, and we will continue to benefit from her decades of good work. May light perpetual shine upon her.

We were honored to provide a Christian burial service for Paul Edward Thompson on July 26th.

Paul was baptized and confirmed at St. Agnes' in 1957 and then moved away in the early 1980's. According to his family, he never forgot his roots.

Providing a service for Paul helped us meet some of his extended family and helped us connect with others who knew him.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

October 4: Blessing of the Animals

Weather permitting, St. Agnes' will hold a Day of St. Francis Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 4th, 5:30 p.m. on the church lawn.

This will be a short prayer service and each pet owner will receive a St. Francis/St. Anthony pendant. We will also receive an offering to benefit Franklin County Animal Harbor.

We ask that all pets be on a leash or in a carrier and be under the safe control of their owners at all times.

"Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures."

November 2: Fall Favorites Luncheon

On Sunday, November 2nd, (the day we "fall back" one hour!), St. Agnes' will hold a church-wide luncheon with "Fall Favorites".

We invite everyone to bring a favorite dish that reminds you of the season.

The parish hall will also be decorated in fall colors to make this a special time together.

This is also the perfect occasion to invite a friend of neighbor to join us for worship and for the meal and fellowship.

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 2nd.

So, remember on Saturday night, November 1st, to set your home clocks back one hour at bed time.

Computer clocks and cellphone clocks will re-set automatically.

November 23: Community Thanksgiving Service, 5:30 p.m.

"Come Ye Thankful People Come" to the Cowan Community Thanksgiving Service!

The service is planned for Sunday evening, November 23rd, 5:30 p.m. at Cowan First Church of the Nazarene. The speaker for the service will be Rev. L.Z. Johnson, and the host church will lead in music and song.

Cowan First Church of the Nazarene is located at 221 West Cumberland St.

The Community Thanksgiving Service is provided by the various churches of the Cowan Ministerial Association.

Updates from our extended church family

Alice Black and Gene Black are having some quiet days at home following Kathleen's passing. Her absence is truly felt, but her love for her family carries on. Alice enjoys phone calls and appreciates everybody's prayers.

Wynona asks us to keep her daughter, Sandra Diane Gibson in our continuing prayers as she struggles with her health. We pray that she will have comfort and strength in her time of need.

Jarod spoke with Nancy Glenn's daughter, Nancy Milali, to see how she's doing these days. Nancy is doing well overall and takes short daily walks to stay active. Due to her lung condition, she doesn't have as many telephone conversations as before. However, both daughters check in with her daily and with her care team. We continue to send our love and prayers.

We have thoroughly enjoyed being with Fr. Scott James on Sunday mornings over the last few weeks! We appreciate Christie and Ella providing a ride for him!

Jarod visited Linda Milligan in early August. Linda spent a very nice day with her brother and sister-in-law on her birthday. Most of her time is spent at home, except for occasional medical appointments. Linda is grateful for our continuing prayers.

We extend our prayers and condolences to Carla Money, Benjamin Money, Sara Money, and the extended family following the loss of Darrell Nelson. Darrell was a treasured citizen of the Cowan community and will be sorely missed.

Kathy Owens checked in by telephone to let everybody know that she's doing well overall. Kathy had foot surgery earlier in the summer.

Rose Pearson had a rough few days taking the medicine required for a kidney infection. Fortunately she is on the road to recovery.
