In OWL we will be reading Gilberto & the Wind, A Snowy Day, & A Hat for Minerva Louise just to name a few. In Math, the children are recognizing & naming basic shapes, counting accurately up to 20, & counting objects arranged in different ways using 1-1 correspondence. In Science, we are exploring what air is and does, the effects of wind, & observing/graphing the weather daily. We made pinwheels and explored how they move in the wind.

K1 scholars have been busy working hard on new projects and concepts! We have begun building our reading fluency and have introduced new high-frequency words into our reading. Scholars have been practicing these words both at school and at home, which is helping us read more challenging books! We are also working hard on our math facts. We are exploring how to make ten by building equations with numbers 1-9. Scholars have been working with ten frames as a tool to support their thinking.

K2 has been working super hard at learning our short vs. long vowel sounds and using different tricks to help us read words in stories. We've learned how to use lots of different strategies when we come to a word we don't know, and are basically sight word PRO's!! We built silly sentences using different people/animals, places, and action words. In Writing, we continue practicing writing complete sentences! K2 celebrated MLK by writing about dreams of our own. In math, we are building and decomposing numbers to find part/part/whole relationships, and can even make our own number bonds K2 scholars are counting all the way to 100! We are mastering having different ELA/Math stations and we can't wait to take off with our learning in 2021!

Fabulous in First
Our First grade is continuing their pursuit of mastering foundational skills. We take our role as learners seriously as we are learning to add/subtract to 20 with speed and accuracy. We have met and mastered the Alligator math of greater than and less than, because we know the Alligator chomps the greater number. As we navigate through January, we are skip counting by 10, 5, and 2. Our knowledge of how to skip in both odd and even is quickly becoming second nature to us.
We like to read a good story every day. After we have read our story, we then talk about the main character, the setting, the problem and the solution. We take turns reading and then rereading the story so that each of us has a chance for new vocabulary.
Each morning we spend some time writing. It might be a question that is asked of us, or we might have something we want to share. When we have finished illustrating our stories, we take time to share them with our classmates. We also are really enjoying the new Fundations curriculum. This daily time spent on letter identification/sound/blending is boosting our spelling and reading.

The second graders are world travelers! In Social Studies, the second grade students have been virtually traveling to each continent. During each virtual trip, we visit major cities, unique landforms, bodies of water and we also learn about different activities you can do in these different places. At the end of each trip, the students get to add the continent they visited to their Passports. The students fill in 3 facts they learned about this continent and even get to color and add a stamp to their passports! We have visited Antarctica, North America and South America so far with the rest to come over the next few weeks!

Grades 3/4 have been learning about waves of sound. Students learned about the connection between sounds and vibration. In the activity, Paper Cup Telephone, students made telephones using cups and string. Students then modified the design of their telephones using different types of supplies to see if they could improve the sound quality. "Sounds" fun right?!
