How Goats Support a More Prepared and Sustainable Calabasas
Since arriving in Calabasas in March, the City’s hardworking herd of goats has been doing more than clearing brush. Targeted grazing is an important part of the City’s approach to wildfire preparedness and sustainable vegetation management. By grazing in strategic, fire-prone areas, the goats help reduce dry vegetation and other potential wildfire fuels, including in areas that can be difficult to access with traditional equipment. In partnership with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority and Los Angeles County Fire Department, this nature-based approach helps create defensible space around the community while supporting ongoing efforts to protect Calabasas’ open spaces and prepare for wildfire.

City of Calabasas and EPIC Partnership Earns City’s First Helen Putnam Award for Excellence
The City of Calabasas is proud to celebrate a historic achievement, earning its first Helen Putnam Award for Excellence from the League of California Cities for its partnership with Emergency Preparedness in Calabasas (EPIC), a resident-led Fire Safe Council. The award recognizes a collaborative approach to emergency preparedness that brings together City staff, volunteers, public safety partners and residents to help strengthen community resilience. Since formally partnering in 2022, the City and EPIC have expanded Firewise USA participation throughout Calabasas, distributed more than 800 emergency radios to help residents communicate when power and cell service are unavailable, developed an emergency preparedness app with offline resources and launched a home hardening rebate program to help residents reduce wildfire risks around their properties. This recognition is a testament to the dedication of everyone who has contributed to these efforts and to what can be accomplished when the City and community work together to help prepare Calabasas for future emergencies.

Gates Canyon Fencing Project Complete
Improvements are complete at Gates Canyon Park, with new fencing now installed along Thousand Oaks Boulevard to match the fencing that was added around Brandon’s Village playground in 2024. The new composite fencing creates a more consistent look throughout the park, improves safety, and provides a longer-lasting alternative to the previous wood fencing that will help reduce ongoing maintenance. The $100,000 project was funded through a grant from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District. Thank you to all the City staff and project partners who helped make this improvement possible!

Door Replacements
Older exterior doors can contribute to energy loss and higher energy costs. Through the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program, property owners can finance energy-efficient door upgrades and pay through their property taxes, helping improve insulation, reduce energy bills and enhance the comfort and appearance of their home or business. Program participation and funding are subject to approval.
