CELEBRATE THE SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM 2025

Since 1972, the national Senior Nutrition Program has supported nutrition services for older adults across the country. Funded by the Older Americans Act (OAA), local programs serve as hubs where people 60+ find healthy meals and vital services that strengthen social connections and promote well-being. Every March, we celebrate our program's anniversary and its many accomplishments at the national and local levels. We promote how nutrition services help people stay independent as they age and highlight critical senior nutrition issues.

The 2025 theme, A Place at the Table, recognizes the importance of local nutrition programs and the meals being served in communities across the country. ACL, its partners, and local programs can use this theme to highlight several key topics, like the benefits of getting to know your community and program participants and how coming together over meals can improve health and well-being.

Save the date! Virtual Celebration Event

Wednesday, March 19, 2025, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET

Attend this virtual event to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the national Senior Nutrition Program. The webinar will recognize the program's impact and discuss topics like partnerships, volunteerism, and quality, all through the lens of this year’s theme, A Place at the Table. Speakers include ACL's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aging, Kari Benson, and ONHPP Director Keri Lipperini.

Sailing Against the Tide: Women of Cape Cod and the Islands at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum

Histories of Cape Cod and the islands are full of stories of ship captains, lightkeepers, and other grizzled men facing the sea. Behind each of them, and oftentimes by their sides, were women. But women should not be dismissed as historical footnotes. They ran businesses, traveled the world, and fought for independence. They were artists, writers, and scientists. Some were prominent community leaders, and some worked behind the scenes. Some were born here, and some made their homes here. Some never married, while others raised large families. They lived diverse lives and continue to shape our maritime community today. Visit the exhibit to learn more about some of their stories.

NEW MONTHLY SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD (SEP) FOR DUALLY ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUALS AND LOW-INCOME SUBSIDY RECIPIENTS

For people enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the new “Monthly SEP” will allow individuals enrolled in Medicaid and/or who receive assistance through the Low-Income Subsidy to drop their Medicare Advantage plan, return to Original Medicare, and enroll in a new standalone Prescription Drug Plan on a monthly basis.

For individuals already in Original Medicare, the Monthly SEP will also allow individuals to switch from one Prescription Drug Plan to another. The SEP cannot be used to enroll into another Medicare Advantage plan.

This Monthly SEP can be used to:

  • Drop a Medicare Advantage plan with Part D prescription coverage (MAPD), join Original Medicare, and enroll in a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
  • In Original Medicare, switch standalone Prescription Drug Plans.

Who can use this Monthly SEP?

  • All dually eligible individuals—people with Medicare and Medicaid benefits—including individuals who are enrolled in Medicare Savings Programs but not full-scope Medicaid (also called partial-benefit dually eligible).
  • All individuals enrolled in the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), also called Extra Help.

How many times can the Monthly SEP be used?

Once per month. Plan changes will be effective the first of the following month. For example, in February 2025, Maria is in Prescription Plan A and wishes to switch to Prescription Plan F. Maria can make the change in February and she will be disenrolled from Prescription Plan A and enrolled in Prescription Plan F effective March 1, 2025.

How is this option changing in 2025 compared to 2024?

Prior to January 1, 2025, individuals could make changes to their Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans on a quarterly basis. Starting in 2025, individuals will be able to make changes on a monthly basis. However, the monthly SEP cannot be used to join a Medicare Advantage plan. This SEP can only be used to disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage or to switch to standalone Prescription Drug Plans. There is an exception for full benefit dually eligible individuals who wish to join certain integrated D-SNPs. See below for more information on this new enrollment period.

The last time the Quarterly SEP could be used was in September 2024.

KNOWBE4: SCAMS

IRS and Tax Scams

Every year, the bad guys take advantage of innocent taxpayers, like you, who are patiently waiting on their tax return. Last year, the IRS noticed a significant increase in phishing attempts to steal money or tax data, therefore you must be on high alert.

How it Happens: Tax Scams and Malicious Activity

The bad guys have a number of tax-related tricks up their sleeves when it comes to stealing your money and/or sensitive information. Here are a few examples of sophisticated tax scams that have been found in the wild:

  • Scammers send emails posing as tax service companies by spoofing emails and using stolen logos. Once you respond to the email with personal data or tax information, they can pocket your hard-earned money.
  • Similar to the scam above, the bad guys send look-alike emails containing hyperlinks that lead you to malicious websites or fake PDF attachments that download malware or viruses to your computer.
  • Tax scams aren’t limited to emails! Be on the look out for callers posing as IRS representatives claiming you owe money that must be paid immediately. The callers typically threaten arrests, deportation, or suspension of business or driver’s license.

Keep in mind, these are only a few examples and these scam artists are constantly coming up with new ways to fool you.

How Do I Know it’s a Scam?

Always remember the following during tax season, and all year long:

  • The IRS will always mail a bill before calling you about taxes owed.
  • The IRS will never ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • The IRS will never immediately threaten to arrest you for not paying taxes owed.
  • The IRS will always offer the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed before demanding your payment.
  • The IRS does not use emails or text messages to discuss personal tax matters, such as taxes owed or tax refunds.

Only share sensitive data over email when there is no other alternative and you’re certain the recipient is valid.

Online Dating Scams

Over the past couple of decades, online dating has grown in popularity to become the widely-accepted norm. This shift in society’s way of meeting people leads us to be less cautious about meeting strangers online. This newfound comfort in talking to strangers leaves room for professional scammers and social engineers to make their way into your life, and eventually into your bank account.

“I would never fall for that”, says everyone.

Many assume the individuals falling for these plots are vulnerable and lonely people who are unable to find a date offline. The truth is that doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and people of all ages from all walks of life have fallen for such scams. Considering the detailed personas these criminals build for their victims, anyone could fall for online dating scams.

How it Happens

Dating and romance fraud often happens through popular dating sites, but these scammers use social media as well. They make fake profiles with fictional names, pictures, and professions. These con artists often claim to be from a location near you, but say they’re currently working in other countries, so conveniently, they can’t meet you in person. These professional manipulators go to great lengths to gain your trust and your interest, often using details from your social media accounts to their advantage. They shower you with loving words, intimate conversations, and sometimes even gifts.

Over time, once they’ve gained your trust, they will ask you for money, gifts, or bank account details. Often, they play up some sort of personal emergency, or claim they want to visit you but lack the funds to do so–and once you’re emotionally invested, these stories seem believable.

The Warning Signs

Here’s a few warning signs to look out for when looking for love online:

  • They often develop strong feelings shortly after introduction or after only speaking a few times.
  • They quickly ask you to move the communication from the dating application or site to personal means of communication, such as texts or calls.
  • Their messages are poorly written or vague.
  • Their dating site or social media profile isn’t consistent with what they tell you over conversations.

Protect Yourself

Unfortunately, when meeting potential love interests online, you should always assume the possibility of a scam. Be very cautious about sharing pictures or your personal information with strangers. Finally, never send money to someone you haven’t met in person. Emotional investment can cloud your judgement, remember to follow your head and not your heart when it comes to online dating.

COUNTED OUT

Please join us for a screening of the new film "Counted Out" at 4:00 PM on March 13th (Pi Day Eve!) at 529 Main Street, Hyannis. Registration is suggested but not required.

Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time through an unexpected lens: math.

In our current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand or even notice.

But whether we know it or not, our numeric literacy—whether we can speak the language of math—is a critical determinant of social and economic power.

Through a mosaic of personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, Counted Out shows what’s at risk if we keep the status quo. Do we want an America in which most of us don’t consider ourselves “math people”? Where math proficiency goes down as students grow up? Or do we want a country where everyone can understand the math that undergirds our society—and can help shape it?

The film is dedicated to Bob Moses, the civil rights leader and MacArthur genius who saw math access as the civil rights issue of our time, and whose work we follow in some of the last filmed interviews of his life.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP IS HIRING A COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

The Community Development Partnership leads the Lower Cape in building a diverse year-round community of people who can afford to live, work and thrive here. To accomplish our mission, we promote, develop and manage affordable housing; nurture the launch and growth of small businesses; and facilitate collaboration with business, non-profit and government partners. Achieving our mission requires several strategies and a range of programs. Our work starts with creating affordable homes—so essential to a healthy economy, but a challenge in communities like ours where seasonal and vacation dynamics drive the market beyond the reach of many who live and work locally year-round.

The Community Organizing Manager will primarily work within a Housing Advocacy team to conduct outreach, base building, training, education and leadership development among our Lower Cape community residents for the main purpose of increasing housing opportunities in the region. The Housing Advocacy team currently includes a Director of Housing Advocacy, a Housing Advocacy Program Manager and a second Community Organizing Manager. The Community Organizing Manager will work with our housing development team to assist with community engagement, as needed. Additionally, the Community Organizing Manager will work with our Development & Communications team to assist with the design of our in-house campaign to build public support for housing.
