If Loving Onions Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right!
|
|
In the same family as
chives, garlic, scallions, and leeks, onions can vary in size, shape, flavor, and color. Flavor is typically based on season. Here are a few fast onion facts:
- Onions were worshiped and used in burial rituals in Ancient Egypt.
- Onions are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C.
- Onions are low in calories.
- There is a gas in onion that may cause some people to cry. Cutting onions in water helps to alleviate this.
- Onions may help boost digestive health.

What You Need:
- large skillet
- 3 large onions (yellow, purple, white, or mixed)
- 3 tablespoons of butter or oil
- tongs (for stirring)
- 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, or wine
Instructions:
- Remove the stem and root ends of 2-3 onions (yellow, purple, white, or mixed). Slice the onions.
- Melt 3 tablespoons of butter or oil (or combine the two) in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the onions and a pinch of salt.
- Lower the heat to medium low and let onions simmer slowly until they turn golden brown.
- Use tongs to flip and stir onions occasionally.
- If the onions stick to the bottom of the skilet, de-glaze with a tablespoon of red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, or wine.
- Continue stirring the onions until they have reached the color you like. Typically, onions will be ready after an hour of simmering, but your preferences may vary. Enjoy right away or store.

Let's admit it. Raw or even sautéed onions can be overpowering in some dishes. This is why caramelizing your onions serve as a great, easy alternative. Toss these tasty onions on your pizza, grilled burger, mashed potatoes with gravy, or patty melt, and enjoy! Caramelized onions add a lot of flavor with very few ingredients and hardly an effort.
