A Message from Liz Perez-Howe, Axis CEO: "Did You Know?" Series

As part of our ongoing efforts to connect with our mission and heritage, I am excited to share a new "Did You Know?" series that delves into the rich history of Community Health Centers. For the next few months, I'll highlight a different aspect of our Community Health Center and its rich history.

The Axis board is a diverse representation of our patient population!

Dear Community Members,

I hope you've been enjoying summer and took some time to relax. In this latest DYK series, we're diving into something truly special about our health center – the incredibly important role of our Board of Directors. You might not know this, but more than half of our board members are actual patients. Yep, our patients help run the show!

Let's dive into how our patient board members shape our health center!

1. Patient Power: This patient-majority governance model is a hallmark of health centers, mandated by federal law. It ensures that the perspectives and needs of our patients directly influence our policies and decisions. This unique setup means the people we serve are directly involved in making the big decisions. It's all about keeping us grounded and focused on what really matters.

2. Community Voices: Having patients on our board means we’re always listening to the community. It’s their health center, and their input helps us provide the best care possible. This involvement makes sure we’re meeting our patients’ real needs.

3. Diverse Perspectives: Our board reflects the diversity of our community. This is crucial because it helps us understand and address the specific needs and challenges our patients face. It's all about creating care that resonates with everyone.

4. Quality Improvement: The insights and feedback from our patient board members are invaluable in improving the quality of care we provide. Our patient board members bring invaluable insights. They highlight gaps, suggest practical solutions, and share their experiences. This ongoing feedback loop is essential for us to keep improving.

5. Strategic Thinkers: The Board provides us with strategic guidance and oversight, helping us stay on track and innovative. Their diverse experiences contribute to robust decision-making processes, ensuring we stay adaptable and forward-thinking.

6. Health Equity Champions: With patients on the board, we’re constantly reminded of our commitment to health equity. Their presence reinforces our mission to provide high-quality care to everyone, no matter their circumstances.

We are truly grateful for our Board of Directors and their willingness to share their experiences and insights. Their role is a shining example of the power of community-driven healthcare. By involving patients directly in our governance, we ensure that our health center remains true to its mission and responsive to the needs of those we serve.

And to each of you at Axis: thank you for being part of this journey and for making a difference every day.

Warmly,

Liz
