Return-to-Work Consultation
For many physicians, medical forms from employers are a significant administrative burden. With more than 40,000 employers in Manitoba, each has its own form and process, asking for similar information in different ways. We’ve been working with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) to tackle this issue.
What’s new: The CMA is now consulting on a draft policy to better define your role in helping patients return to work.
Our work continues too: While participating in the CMA initiative to update this policy, we’ve been working here in Manitoba on related issues:
- Eliminating sick notes, with legislation currently being considered by the legislature
- Creating a universal employer medical form to simplify the requests that come to physicians for return to work, accommodations, and common associated issues.

Streamlined Measles Reporting
Manitoba Health is streamlining the process for reporting measles cases, as the outbreak continues to spread in Manitoba at the highest rate in Canada.
The new Clinical Notification of Measles Form should now be used to report cases.
Reporting requirements re-cap:
- Fax this form to Manitoba Health within 24 hours of seeing the patient
- You are not required to report lab confirmed measles cases, as they are already reported to Public Health directly by the lab
- Additional telephone reporting is only required for suspected cases in certain situations such as having close contact with high-risk individuals in the prior 6 days
Read the full memo to health care providers.

Legislative Bill Watch
We’re keeping an eye on health system-related bills for you with a running list available here. New on the docket this week:
Pharmacist Responsibilities: As part of Bill 50, this legislation would allow pharmacists to prescribe a substitute drug if it has the same therapeutic effect as a drug originally prescribed by another health care practitioner. This could help navigate frequent drug shortages without requiring new physician prescriptions, and make it easier for patients to switch to lower cost alternatives.
We are interested in your feedback about how this could improve your practice, as well as any concerns you may have.
- We are following this legislation very closely and seeking clarification on the clinical details to gain a better understanding of what this means for physicians, and how it may impact your practice.
- Read the full bill.
Have your say: To help inform how we respond, we invite you to write to us at practiceadvice@doctorsmanitoba.ca.

Budget Day is March 24
The Manitoba government will unveil the provincial budget on Tuesday, March 24, laying out its priorities for the year ahead. Based on your feedback, we are looking for continued investment to improving and stabilizing health care, particularly:
- Targeted recruitment to areas with physician shortages, particularly some specialties, ERs, and rural communities.
- A focus on retention and improving work environments for physicians.
- Investments in team-based care in community practices, and adding more capacity in our hospitals.
We will be on-site at the Manitoba Legislature to hear the Budget Speech, analyze numbers, meet with ministers, and continue to monitor these issues very closely.

New Personal Care Home Proposed for Winnipeg
The Manitoba government confirmed plans to move ahead with a new personal care home in the Bridgwater neighbourhood of Waverly West in Winnipeg, beginning public consultations in June.
Read the announcement.
Yes, but: While more long term care capacity is certainly an important needed move, this PCH was actually originally announced over a decade ago in 2015, but was left in limbo and delayed by successive changes in government.

Record Number of ICU Nurses to Graduate
A record 45 ICU nurses are completing specialized critical care training this spring and preparing to work in hospitals across the province, nearly double the average class size. They will take up posts at St. Boniface, HSC, Grace, and Brandon hospitals.
We spoke with the Free Press, welcoming the news. We noted one of the top concerns we hear from you is that we need more ICU beds to keep up with our growing population and this plays a major role in addressing those gaps.

Inaccurate ER Wait Predictions
This week, news broke about an internal memo saying the system that predicts ER wait times in Winnipeg had multiple flaws that means waits sometimes appear lower than they should.
We spoke with CBC Manitoba and the Free Press, noting doctors strive for accuracy in everything they do, and that they would expect the information the health system shares with patients be held to the same standard.

Nourishment Through Food and Mentorship!
Members of the Doctors Manitoba Mentorship Program gathered on Monday for a hands-on culinary experience.
What happened: The Nourish and Network event brought mentors and learners together at The Food Studio for an evening of cooking and conversation.
Participants worked side by side to prepare a fresh citrus salad, hand-rolled spinach ravioli with homemade pasta dough, and crepes for dessert. The relaxed setting created space for informal mentorship and meaningful conversations over a shared meal.
What’s next: Our spring mentorship event takes place on April 20 at Kilter Brewing Co.
