Let’s All Hang Together: Finding Some Joy

This July 4th - Intellectual Takeout

A few days ago, a friend told me she used to love celebrating July 4th, but the last few years have brought more sadness than joy to that holiday.

Listening to her, I couldn’t help but sympathize with her sorrow. July 4th arrives in the middle of the summer, but rain or shine, for many of us, I suspect, a cloud now hangs over this day and what should be a celebration of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

The reasons for this unhappiness lie all around us. Inflation is eating up our salaries and savings, and the pandemic with its masks, lockdowns, and closures of businesses, schools, and churches haunts our memories.

Moreover, we get the impression that the administration and certain departments of the federal government are playing a game of deflection rather than addressing issues. A classic example can be found in the rising tide of violence in our major cities. To great hullabaloo, the Congress passed, and President Biden signed, more gun control laws—as if we didn’t have enough of those on the books. These include “red flag” laws, which encourage some Americans to snitch on others whom they regard as dangerous. These may prevent some shootings, but they also constitute yet another step toward Big Brotherism. And does anyone—anyone—really believe these regulations will reduce urban gunplay?

Even worse, however, is the darkness we sense rather than see falling across our country, the invisible malaise that stalks our land like a specter. Some in our government, for instance, criticize American liberties and ideals, but how many praise the American spirit and the great men and women of her past? How many of us can remember a time ...

Jackie Gingrich Cushman: Proud to Be an American

We must continue to fight to ensure that our government remains ours and our freedoms remain intact.

I am proud to be an American. Yes, I know that our system of government is not perfect, but I firmly believe that it is the best in the world. We are an exceptional country, not because our people are exceptional but because we have a different, and exceptional, structure of government. I am grateful that I was born an American.

We declared our independence from Great Britain 246 years ago this week. It happened after years of overreaching rule by King George III and Britain’s insistence on taxation without representation. We had had enough. We were pushed into action over time, and act we did — finally.

The taxation began in the 1760s; the Boston Massacre occurred in 1770; the Boston Tea Party in 1773; and the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April of 1775.

Patrick Henry’s call to action, “Give me liberty or give me death,” made in the spring of 1775, was the first strong public statement that, if we were to be free, then we would have to fight Britain. Before that, we believed that we could negotiate with Britain, that somehow, we could make it work without confrontation.....

Declare Your Independence from Tyranny, America | Tenth Amendment Center

Imagine living in a country where armed soldiers crash through doors to arrest and imprison citizens merely for criticizing government officials.

Imagine that in this very same country, you’re watched all the time, and if you look even a little bit suspicious, the police stop and frisk you or pull you over to search you on the off chance you’re doing something illegal.

Keep in mind that if you have a firearm of any kind (or anything that resembled a firearm) while in this country, it may get you arrested and, in some circumstances, shot by police.

If you’re thinking this sounds like America today, you wouldn’t be far wrong.

However, the scenario described above took place more than 200 years ago, when American colonists suffered under Great Britain’s version of an early police state. It was only when the colonists finally got fed up with being silenced, censored, searched, frisked, threatened, and arrested that they finally revolted against the tyrant’s fetters.

No document better states their grievances than the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson......

The Constitution isn’t Absolute? | Tenth Amendment Center

Arguing that “high-caliber” weapons should be federally banned, President Joe Biden claimed, “Remember, the Constitution was never absolute.”

Biden was merely advancing the popular notion of a “living breathing Constitution.” According to proponents of this theory, the founders “couldn’t have imagined” all of the changes that would happen over time, such as the development of high-powered, semi-automatic weapons. Therefore, the Constitution must evolve and change with the times.

The founders were smart people. I’m certain they imagined that technology and society would evolve over time. What the founders couldn’t have imagined is a scenario where the government can change the limits on its own power and authority on its own whim.

That said, Biden wasn’t entirely wrong. The Constitution wasn’t intended to be “absolute.” The founders did, in fact, recognize that changes would be necessary as times changed.

And that’s why they included an amendment process.

We can change the Constitution, but it requires an act of the people of the states. The president can’t do it. Congress can’t do it.

Congress can propose amendments, or state conventions can propose them. But amendments must be ratified by the people in 3/4 of the states. As Robert Livingston put it during the New York ratifying convention, “All power is derived from the people”

It’s the Fourth of July. Do You Know Where Your Fireworks Came From? - InsideHook

When you go to light off your stockpile of fireworks this Fourth of July weekend, take an extra moment to consider where those mortars, firecrackers and Roman candles came from. No, we’re not talking about the pimply teen who sold you the 36-shot Gallantly Streaming aerial repeater with the waving American flag on the box. We’re talking about the little-known Chinese factories where the overwhelming majority of consumer fireworks are made.

“You don’t know until you know,” says Jessi Dragoiu, talking about China’s historic pyrotechnic industry, which many Americans are blissfully unaware of. “I had no idea until I’m there watching it. It’s so eye-opening.”

Dragoiu is the purchasing and product development manager for Phantom Fireworks, one of the largest retailers of its kind in the U.S. After getting her start at the company right out of high school in 2006, as a cashier at one of their 80 permanent showrooms, she eventually got her masters in international business, went to the corporate side of things in 2012, and has now been to China about 17 times to oversee the long journey their fireworks make from rural factories to households across America. ...

SCOTUS Reins in the Power of the EPA

On Thursday the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that will significantly curtail the power of executive agencies to control entire sectors of the economy through promulgating rules.

While some commentators view this decision narrowly as a determination of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to promulgate regulations to address climate change, in practice, it sets a precedent that will limit the ability of all executive agencies to make regulations that shift entire industries without specific congressional authority to do so.

According to legal expert Jonathan Turley, “it will be much more difficult for President Biden to order sweeping environmental changes without congressional approval” in the wake of this decision.

The case, West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency, originated during the Obama administration. It challenged the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, a set of regulations that required all energy producers to transition coal-fired power plants to natural gas. The Obama EPA relied on its powers under the Clean Air Act to make the mandate.....

Billions Keep Flowing to Afghanistan, State Dept. Blocks Audit to Disclose Where Money is Going | Judicial Watch

The U.S. has dropped a ghastly $146 billion on Afghanistan reconstruction in the last two decades and billions more continue to be spent, but the Biden administration is blocking federal auditors from conducting their congressionally mandated job of investigating where the money is going. For months the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has been trying to investigate the abrupt collapse of the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan, if the State Department is complying with laws and regulations prohibiting the transfer of funds to the Taliban and ongoing humanitarian programs supporting the Afghan people. However, the State Department and its offshoot, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), refuse to cooperate as required by law.

This month the head of SIGAR, John F. Sopko, expressed outrage at the State Department’s efforts to obstruct his office’s investigation. In letters to congressional committees and Secretary of State Antony Blinken and USAID Administrator Samantha Power, Sopko reveals that the State Department has blown off more than 20 requests for information from his office in the last eight months. The watchdog writes that the sudden refusal to cooperate is particularly surprising after more than a decade of cooperation. “Billions of dollars have been spent in Afghanistan and billions more continue to be spent,” Sopko writes. “Congress and American taxpayers deserve to know why the Afghan government collapsed after all that assistance, where the money went, and how taxpayer money is now being spent in Afghanistan.”

How the Pentagon Uses Its 127e Program to Wage Proxy Wars

Small teams of U.S. Special Operations forces are involved in a low-profile proxy war program on a far greater scale than previously known, according to exclusive documents and interviews with more than a dozen current and former government officials.

While The Intercept and other outlets have previously reported on the Pentagon’s use of the secretive 127e authority in multiple African countries, a new document obtained through the Freedom of Information Act offers the first official confirmation that at least 14 127e programs were also active in the greater Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region as recently as 2020. In total, between 2017 and 2020, U.S. commandos conducted at least 23 separate 127e programs across the world.

Separately, Joseph Votel, a retired four-star Army general who headed both Special Operations Command and Central Command, which oversees U.S. military efforts in the Middle East, confirmed the existence of previously unrevealed 127e “counterterrorism” efforts in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.

How pandas survive solely on bamboo: Evolutionary history

While the celebrated false thumb in living giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) has been known for more than 100 years, how this wrist bone evolved was not understood due to a near-total absence of fossil records. Uncovered at the Shuitangba site in the City of Zhaotong, Yunnan Province in south China and dating back 6-7 million years ago, a fossil false thumb from an ancestral giant panda, Ailurarctos, gives scientists a first look at the early use of this extra (sixth) digit-and the earliest evidence of a bamboo diet in ancestral pandas-helping us better understanding the evolution of this unique structure.

"Deep in the bamboo forest, giant pandas traded an omnivorous diet of meat and berries to quietly consuming bamboos, a plant plentiful in the subtropical forest but of low nutrient value," says NHM Vertebrate Paleontology Curator Dr. Xiaoming Wang. "Tightly holding bamboo stems in order to crush them into bite sizes is perhaps the most crucial adaptation to consuming a prodigious quantity of bamboo."

This discovery could also help solve an enduring panda mystery: why are their false thumbs so seemingly underdeveloped? As an ancestor to modern pandas, Ailurarctos might be expected to have even less well-developed false"thumbs," but the fossil Wang and his colleagues discovered revealed a longer false thumb with a straighter end than its modern descendants' shorter, hooked digit. So why.....

UKRAINE WAR: What Really Happened on Snake Island?

Were Russian troops forced into a humiliating retreat from Snake Island, or did Moscow order a withdrawal from the strategic island as a “goodwill” gesture to promote grain exports?

Let’s see if we can untangle the propaganda from the facts, always keeping in mind that the fog of war shrouds all.

Snake Island’s position in the Black Sea allows guns and missiles stationed there to help control the waters through which much of Ukraine’s imports and exports travel. Or used to, before the war.

Russia took the island early on, but defiant Ukrainian troops there immediately became a symbol of resistance.

“Russian ship, f*** you,” was reportedly the semiofficial Ukrainian reply to the Russian warship Moskva (since sunk) ordering them off the island.

Needless to say, after all that, there’s a lot of prestige that comes with possession of Snake Island on top of its strategic significance......

Bombshell Claim: Google Intercepted 100% of RNC Donation Emails on Biggest Donation Days of Month - for 7 Months Straight

Big Tech’s bias against conservatives is well known.

And yet Google is taking its double standards and discrimination to a new level.

The Republican National Committee revealed that its email communications are being tactically labeled as “spam” by the Silicon Valley company, according to Axios.

The “spam” label allows Google to filter the emails away from the sight of Gmail users, hidden in a spam inbox.

Google sent RNC emails to the spam inbox with regularity on important fundraising deadlines, according to RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

On some days, as many as 90 percent to 100 percent of RNC emails hit the main inbox.

On other critical fundraising dates, the emails are all but assured to be hidden away as spam, reaching as few as 0 percent of Gmail inboxes.

Google has blacklisted and purged information that’s inconvenient to the left from search results for years.

This form of censorship is even more nefarious. It blocked communications between willing parties.

Individuals who are signed up to receive RNC emails can unsubscribe at any time.....

Secretary Buttigieg to Spend $1 Billion to Combat Racist Highways

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is on a mission. He’s looking for highways with a racist past and is aiming to “help reconnect cities and neighborhoods racially segregated or divided by road projects.” Buttigieg is examining interstate highways, built with federal dollars, “where a piece of infrastructure cuts off a neighborhood or a community because of how it was built,” said Buttigieg in a speech announcing the $1 billion “Reconnecting Communities” program.

Leaked Documents Reveal Wide Scope of China's Human Rights Violations in Xinjiang

One of the leaked documents, which contains "a shoot to kill order" for guards in the camp's watchtowers, confirms that these camps are indeed prisons. Another leaked report stipulates how detainees are to be transported from one site to an alternate location: ankle shackles, handcuffs and hoods.

Previous leaks of official documents, unauthorized films, commercial satellite images and testimony from escaped former inmates have scripted a profile of the hell that the Chinese Communist state has crafted for the Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang. This massive province-size gulag regime includes forced abortions, sterilization and rape of female detainees, separation of husbands and wives, removal of children from the custody of parents, obligatory retraining of workers in skills supportive of CCP economic goals, and daily ideological indoctrination of inmates.

Democratic countries should distribute these leaks globally as cautionary warning to all societies that the CCP's projected panda bear image of China obscures the reality of a quite different animal with an insatiable appetite.....

Kristi Noem Gets Hardball Practice

The “news” networks don’t practice any religious observances on their airwaves on Sunday, but they do have a fierce devotion to promoting their sacred “right” to destroy innocent unborn children. You could see this on June 26 during two interviews with Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota, a Republican.

On ABC’s “This Week” and CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Noem was pressured, shamed, and repeatedly interrupted as she spoke about an anti-abortion agenda. Pro-abortion rights Democrats were offered a much gentler touch.

ABC host Martha Raddatz threw hardballs like this at Noem: “The American Medical Association calls the Supreme Court decision a ‘brazen violation of patients’ rights,’ saying that ‘states that end legal abortion will not end abortion. They will end safe abortion, risking devastating consequences, including patients’ lives.’”

This establishes some things:....

Google Let Sberbank-Owned RuTarget Harvest User Data for Months — ProPublica

The day after Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner sent a letter to Google warning it to be on alert for “exploitation of your platform by Russia and Russian-linked entities,” and calling on the company to audit its advertising business’s compliance with economic sanctions.

But as recently as June 23, Google was sharing potentially sensitive user data with a sanctioned Russian ad tech company owned by Russia’s largest state bank, according to a new report provided to ProPublica.

Google allowed RuTarget, a Russian company that helps brands and agencies buy digital ads, to access and store data about people browsing websites and apps in Ukraine and other parts of the world, according to research from digital ad analysis firm Adalytics. Adalytics identified close to 700 examples of RuTarget receiving user data from Google after.....

The Hidden Fees Making Your Bananas, and Everything Else, Cost More

Last fall, a company called One Banana loaded 600,000 pounds of the fruit from its plantations in Guatemala and Ecuador onto ships bound for the Port of Long Beach in California. Once they arrived, the bananas, packed in refrigerated containers, were offloaded by cranes for trucking to a nearby warehouse, where the fruit would be sent to supermarkets nationwide.

But in the midst of a global supply chain crisis, none of the trucking companies the importer normally worked with were willing to come and get the containers.

As the bananas sat at the marine terminal, a logistics specialist for One Banana scrambled, contacting more than a dozen trucking firms.

With each passing hour, the bananas grew closer to spoiling.

“We need to pull out 15 containers from Long Beach Port,” the logistics specialist wrote in an email to one firm. “Please let me know if you could help me with this.”

A trucking company finally said it could — but only if One Banana first paid $12,000 per container on top of .....

EXCLUSIVE: FOIAs Reveal Progressive Money Fueling FBI, DOJ, Leftist Activist and Election Official Coordination – PJ Media

A strange constellation has emerged through public records requests of coordination between progressive funders, federal authorities, corporations, state election officials, and leftist organizations.

Freedom of information requests have uncovered oddball and opaque relationships between some state election officials, federal officials, corporations, progressive activists, and those trying to influence the conduct of those same election officials. These relationships extend to junkets that include baseball games, travel, and even data exchanges between state officials and outside progressive groups.

The story begins with a series of freedom of information act requests aimed at a number of states to see if any election officials are tempted to apply for now-illegal money from the Mark Zuckerberg-funded Center for Technology and Civic Life. Such grants .....

‘Hostile Takeover’ of Global Food System Already in Process, Ice Age Farmer Tells RFK, Jr. • Children's Health Defense

It’s “common knowledge” that we’re headed for a food crisis, said Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. during an interview with agricultural researcher, permaculturalist and author Christian Westbrook on “RFK Jr. The Defender Podcast.”

Westbrook — also known as the Ice Age Farmer — said recent challenges around the availability and production of food are the result of a generations-long plan that began with the “Rockefeller takeover of agriculture.”

Since then we have seen a “gradual destruction of the way humans have grown food since the dawn of time,” Westbrook said, “replacing it with what we now call modern, but highly toxic, petrochemical agriculture.”

Today’s combination of governments overstating their food stocks, supply chain challenges brought on by COVID-19 policies, weather events, diesel shortages, parts shortages and inflation is creating “a perfect storm,” setting us up for “a day of reckoning,” said Westbrook.

The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have long been pushing the idea of a Green Revolution, founded on the idea that animals and plants are “dirty and dangerous,” said Westbrook.

Alleged backroom deal sees Biden backing an anti-abortion lawyer to a lifetime appointment on the bench - American Thinker

With the SCOTUS decision last week to reverse Roe v. Wade, a decades-old lie unraveled: abortion is not a constitutional right, but rather (at the moment) an issue to be decided at the state level.  In the wake of this, the militant lowbrows began to eat their own, particularly Joe Biden.  The Twitterverse erupted in an emotional and vulgar fury, with supporters of abortion demanding that Biden "do something" to secure nationwide access to ending the lives of those not yet born.

Now, according to The Louisville Courier-Journal, Biden and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell purportedly struck a deal to nominate a prominent anti-abortion lawyer to a lifetime appointment as a federal judge.  Kentucky Democrat John Yarmuth confirmed the future nomination of Chad Meredith, detailing that the agreement was part of a broader cooperative effort to shuffle through Biden's other appointments without interference.  Meredith has quite an impressive résumé as a dedicated defender of the unborn and their mothers, so naturally an unexpected selection for a pro-murder Democrat like Biden.

Meredith is a member of the Federalist Society, which set its foundation upon "the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be."  Of course, the idea .....

Ten laws impacting LGBTQ+ rights set to take effect today – The Hill

Laws in Alabama, Florida, Indiana, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah come into effect today.

Gov. Spencer Cox (R) vetoed the measure, which requires school sports teams be determined by the players’ sex assigned at birth, in March.

“Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few. I don’t understand what they are going through or why they feel the way they do. But I want them to live,” Cox wrote in a veto letter at the time. “And all the research shows that even a little acceptance and connection can reduce suicidality significantly.”

Cox’s veto was later overridden by the legislature.

A Win Over Green Tyranny

The left-wing assault on American energy was just dealt a swift defeat by the United States Supreme Court. And President Donald Trump’s confirmations to the bench paved the way for it to happen.

Never in my life would I think that gas prices would rise so steeply in such a short period of time that stations would run out of space on the pump screen to display the price. But the Biden Administration’s assault on American energy is simply unprecedented. They will try to pass the blame, but the American people know what’s happening. Green New Deal advocates are pushing for a great energy reset in America, and they don’t care how much it hurts you.

Arguably, gas and oil are the most visible indicators of the Left’s efforts to fundamentally alter U.S. energy policies. But the Supreme Court just handed down a case that claps back at the Environmental Protection Agency’s deeply flawed position that it can unilaterally govern energy companies in the name of climate justice. ....

You Should Care About Martin Van Buren

Even the most passionate history lover could be forgiven for not knowing much about Martin Van Buren — at least beyond the origin of “OK.” Time Magazine labeled him as one of America’s 10 most forgettable Presidents, and C-SPAN’s 2021 Presidential Historians Survey ranked him as America’s 34th best President, putting Van Buren far closer to worst than to first.

I’m not about to claim that Van Buren was secretly America’s greatest President; he wasn’t. His tepid response to the Panic of 1837, and his unwillingness to confront the evil of slavery until it was too late indict his administration and later political career. Much like his political rival, John Quincy Adams, however, what Van Buren did outside of the presidency is far more interesting (and important) than anything he did as President.

This is because Van Buren’s political philosophy undergirded one of American politics’ most important and enduring institutions — the modern....

Health Care Is Not a Right, No Matter What the Left Says

At the recent unveiling of his latest plan for Medicare for All, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., evoked a familiar theme. “Health care,” he said, “is a human right that all Americans, regardless of income, are entitled to.”

But health care is neither a right nor a privilege. It’s an aggregate of goods and services. The task of health policy is to ensure timely, affordable access to these goods and services for all who need them — and to do so without sacrificing the quality of care.

Medicare for All would outlaw private health insurance and grant everyone a right to public coverage. All Americans would have an insurance card with their name on it. But as real-world evidence from Medicare for All-like systems abroad makes clear, access to coverage is not the same as access to care.

That’s because there’s a limited supply of health care, just like any other good or service. Unlimited demand — fueled by Medicare for All’s promise that care will be free at the point of delivery — paired with limited supply is a recipe for shortages, long waits, and suffering far worse than anything Americans see under our current system.

Great Britain’s National Health Service, the single-payer system established in 1948, has subjected patients to life-threatening treatment delays and subpar care for generations. And that crisis has only grown more....

The Cry-Baby Leftist Mind

Modern progressives assume moral and intellectual authority.

Consequently, their supposedly superior ends naturally justify almost any means necessary to achieve them.

Among the elite, the Democrats’ “blue-wall” states were once considered a testament to the wisdom of the Electoral College. When that wall crumbled in 2016 to Donald Trump, the Electoral College suddenly was blasted as a relic of our anti-democratic Founders.

The nine-person Supreme Court was once beloved. On issues like abortion, school prayer, same-sex marriage, pornography, and Miranda rights, the left cheered the court as it made the law and ignored legislatures and presidents.

Republican court picks—Harry Blackmun, William Brennan, Anthony Kennedy, Sandra Day O’Connor, Lewis Powell, John Roberts, David Souter, John Paul Stevens, Potter Stewart, and Earl Warren—would often flip leftward. How could they not be swayed by the greater brilliance of their liberal colleagues?

From affirmative action to Roe v. Wade to Obamacare, apostate Republican justices for a half-century greenlighted legislating from the bench.

Pelosi’s Stalinist Show Trial

Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony was all hearsay. It was inadmissible in any legal proceeding.

I’m sure you’ve heard all the “big news” from Tuesday’s January 6th Committee hearing by now. “Kangaroo court” doesn’t even begin to describe what took place. It was a Stalinist show trial.

It is being conducted by one party with one purpose — to destroy one political opponent they despise and to demoralize millions of American citizens.

The breathless reporting of Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony was everywhere, including on Fox News. Bret Baier called it “jaw-dropping,” and claimed it “moved the ball.”

But even CNN’s Jake Tapper had enough common sense to warn his viewers that the testimony was all hearsay. It was inadmissible in any legal proceeding. Hutchison was talking about things she did not witness.

And now actual witnesses are coming forward to flatly refute her version of events.

CNN is reporting that two Secret Service agents named by Cassidy Hutchinson are willing to testify publicly to dispute her testimony. That begs the obvious question: Why didn’t the January 6th Committee interview them before or allow them to testify yesterday?

Sadly, this has nothing to do with the truth. It’s all about the left’s narrative, and laying the foundation for charging Donald Trump with inciting an insurrection.

Semper Fi, Woody Williams

Farewell to the last World War II Medal of Honor “caretaker.”

On February 23, 1945, a 21-year-old Marine corporal, Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams, watched from the bloody beaches of Iwo Jima as our flag was raised atop Mount Suribachi, immortalized by the sculpture at the Marine Corps Memorial.

For his heroic actions on that same day, Williams became one of 27 Iwo Jima Marines and sailors to receive the Medal of Honor — our nation’s highest military award for valor — “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty…” It was the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history in which 7,000 Americans perished.

Williams, who was a very humble man and welcomed anyone to address him as “Woody,” was one of 472 World War II recipients of the Medal of Honor. He was the last living WWII recipient until his death this week at age 98 in his beloved home state of West Virginia.

Woody was the youngest of seven children born into a hard-working farming family, and, at just 3.5 pounds at birth in 1923, he was not expected to survive. Thank God he did. He wanted to enlist in the Marine Corps after the “Japs” attacked Pearl Harbor, but given that his low birth weight hindered his adult stature, he did not meet the 5'6" minimum height requirement. But the Corps reduced that restriction in 1943 and Woody was in.

Canada: An Introduction for American Conservatives - The American Conservative

Canada, at that time often called the Dominion of Canada, was founded on July 1, 1867, 155 years ago, with the passage of the British North America Act in the British House of Commons in London. It was informally a union of two historic nations in the northern half of North America: the English Canadians and the French-Canadians (mostly centered in Quebec). The Aboriginal peoples were included, insofar as they were traditionally considered to be under the special protection of the Crown.

In 1867, Canada was organized into four provinces—Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia—each with local legislatures and Premiers, and a countrywide federal legislature and prime minister based in Ottawa. Canada later expanded to the ten provinces and three northern territories that constitute it today. .....

At the NATO summit, President Biden said that gas prices are so high because Putin invaded Ukraine. Actually, it’s because of the way Western leaders, including Joe Biden, chose to respond to Putin’s invasion: by cutting off Russian oil. In theory, it’s fine to boycott the oil of a nation to punish it for launching a war, but this doesn’t seem to be hurting Russia at all. In fact, according to The New York Times:

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered global condemnation and tough sanctions aimed at denting Moscow’s war chest. Yet Russia’s revenues from fossil fuels, by far its biggest export, soared to records in the first 100 days of its war on Ukraine, driven by a windfall from oil sales amid surging prices, a new analysis shows.

In other words, the Russians are getting richer than ever on their oil and gas exports. How, exactly, is our oil ban hurting them? It’s not! But it’s hurting consumers in the US and Europe, and will do so indefinitely. We are plunging into recession because of all this. Do you think that the Biden administration cares? Watch this:....

Changing Minds Across the Back Fence - Intellectual Takeout

The Dobbs v. Jackson case that recently overturned Roe v. Wade has generated more average, everyday conversations about a Supreme Court decision than I’ve ever seen. I’ve heard strangers walking by me talking about the issue while on their phones. Neighbors even discuss it over the back fence.

My mother had one of these back-fence discussions the day the decision came down. She innocently mentioned the case, thinking the neighbor would be happy about it, only to be taken aback when the lady launched into a lament: What about all of the sexual assaults and the people who didn’t have insurance and the many poor children that were already in terrible situations? Did we want more of these? she questioned tensely.

Trying to keep it civil, my mother acknowledged that there are many difficult situations but pointed out that every baby is still a blessing and that life is precious. She later told me that this interaction made her feel like leaving town and moving to the country, away from the vitriol that seems ever-present in our current.....

Feds Kept Tabs on Mort Sahl's Jokes About FBI

Government records show that FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover thought standup comedian Mort Sahl was a "very sick man," and that the feds kept close tabs on Sahl's jokes about them, believing that he and like-minded comedian Lenny Bruce were receiving material from "communistic" sources.

Sahl, whose barbed political commentary paved the way for generations of anti-establishment comedians, died last October at 94. His FBI files, obtained by Reason through a Freedom of Information Act request, show that the FBI was quite sensitive to Sahl's frequent jabs at it and Hoover.

A 1960 memo from the FBI's Los Angeles field office to Hoover, headlined "Criticism of F.B.I.," recounts Sahl's appearance on a local TV station, which included a long, involved joke about the FBI protecting Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev on a visit to Chicago.

One assumes that Sahl's delivery was funnier. The memo included a rundown of Sahl's background and political activity, such as performing at American Civil Liberties Union galas and a fundraiser for Sylvia Powell and Julian Schuman, two Americans charged with sedition for articles they wrote during the Korean War.

A newspaper columnist named Jack O'Brian advised the FBI that Sahl and fellow comic Lenny Bruce were "what is known in.....

Snowballs Of Soft Totalitarianism - The American Conservative

This piece by the liberal NYT columnist Tom Edsall is the most hopeful thing I’ve read in a while.

In it, he details how so many left-wing activist organizations are tearing each other apart internally over wokeness. Excerpt

:"There has been a burst of stories in recent weeks describing devastating internal conflicts within progressive organizations, the most conspicuous of which was Ryan Grim’s June 13 Intercept piece, “Elephant in the Zoom: Meltdowns Have Brought Progressive Advocacy Groups to a Standstill at a Critical Moment in World History.”

"Grim’s assessment resonated across the internet and was quickly followed by Molly Redden’s June 17 HuffPost account, “Inside the A.C.L.U.’s Post-Trump Reckoning”; Jon Gabriel’s article in the Arizona Republic on June 18, “Who needs a right-wing plot when progressives are busy eating themselves alive?”; Zack Colman’s June 19 Politico column, “Justice or overreach? As crucial test looms, Big Greens are under fire”; and John Harris’s June 23 Politico essay, “The Left Goes to War with Itself.”...

The Genius of Byzantium: Reflections on a Forgotten Empire - The Imaginative Conservative

Everywhere Western man longs for Constantinople and nowhere has he any idea how to find her. To do so is to reclaim, at last, the meaning of an empire that once defined a hierarchy of imagination long ago abandoned by our civilization; of an eleven-century political, religious and cultural struggle that sought to reconcile Christianity and Antiquity, transforming the Western spirit into a brilliant battleground between Latin and Greek, Augustus and Basileus, reason and faith, ancient and modern. Yet to unearth this Byzantium, this “heaven of the human mind”, as Yeats dreamed her, is not to go searching through histories and legends, glorious ruins or immortal poems. It is, instead, to be found retracing the evolution of a new and profound conflict in Western thought that began with the mysterious conversion of the first Constantine and ended, at the gates of the marble and gold City called ‘the world’s desire’ by the sons of that city, with the unconquerable faith of the last Constantine—himself heir to the great Palaiologoi who resurrected the dormant title of Hellene to describe their own noble line of descent.

No Byzantine ever referred to himself as Byzantine—it was ‘Roman’ all the way. It was, in fact, the librarian of the wealthy 16th century Fugger family, Hieronymous Wolf, who coined the term “Byzantium”; its common usage, in turn, taking root only as of the early 20th century among the.....

The Global Warming Narrative Just Hit a Literal Iceberg

Global warming is not a serious topic. No one cares, but the left wants us all to suffer in order to drop the Earth's temperature by less than a degree or whatever.

Let's cannibalize future economic growth, curb population growth while we're at it, and declare war on burgers.

These are the most miserable people on Earth. The problem is fighting back against their climate lies is hard when you have the shield of Big Tech there to flag and censor stories that shred their narrative. Before that crackdown, we used to torch the climate change crew. I'll do so again.

The Earth is warming so rapidly that it caused a Norwegian cruise ship to hit an iceberg that shouldn't even exist under these harsh conditions (via NY Post):

Mark Alexander: About the J6 Testimony 'Bombshells' | The Patriot Post

Now that the dust is settling after the “bombshells” dropped by Nancy Pelosi’s “star witness” this week, let’s review.

Since January 6, 2021, I have condemned in the strongest words the riotous jackasses who fought with police outside and inside the Capitol building that day. Granted, many of those who entered the building did no damage — but all who entered the building did irreparable damage to the reputation of all of us who had supported Donald Trump’s administrative policies over the previous four years.

Likewise, I have condemned Trump for both his actions and inaction that day.

I have also condemned Nancy Pelosi’s histrionic J6 dog and pony show, her “insurrection inquisition” that, for the first time in the history of such special committees, disallowed any appointees by the minority leader. In other words, Pelosi and her leftist thugs assured there would be .....

Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words ~ The Imaginative Conservative

One of the best contemporary memoirs I’ve read in the last decade is My Grandfather’s Son, which was published in 2007. In his tale that ended with the fierce 1991 confirmation battle for his seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas told a remarkable story of his journey from being raised by a single mother in Jim Crow-era Georgia poverty to taking a place at the top of the nation’s judicial branch. It’s a fascinating and truly all-American story of an important figure on the Court.

The necessity of saying that he is important is truly a sad fact. Despite the popular but racist liberal slurs (sometimes said, sometimes illustrated in cartoons) about how Justice Thomas was simply a “sock-puppet,” “lawn jockey,” or shoeshine boy for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, those who follow legal and political philosophy know that Justice Thomas, though voting with Justice Scalia quite often, has a somewhat different judicial philosophy. His originalism differs in several ways from Scalia’s (which interested readers can explore in detail in book-length works by Ralph Rossum and Paul Scott Gerber), but the most important is that Justice Thomas takes into account not merely the texts of the Constitution and laws at hand, as did Justice Scalia the textualist. Justice Thomas’s jurisprudence is based on taking seriously the natural law principles in the Founding, most prominently the political equality enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Hence the title of Michael Pack’s excellent new documentary on Justice Thomas being shown in select theaters across the country: Created Equal: Clarence Thomas In His Own Words.[*]....

How to Pick a President: A Guide to Electoral Count Act Reform | Cato Institute

The peaceful transfer of power, regular elections, and limited terms of office are among our most precious legacies of the American Revolution. These bedrock constitutional principles are indispensable both to “insure domestic Tranquility” and to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”

But as we saw in the 2020 election, operating under an antiquated rule book can pose serious risks. The Electoral Count Act of 1887 (ECA), with minor amendments since, is the statutory codification of important details left unaddressed by the Constitution’s sparse provisions for electing a president. It is in dire need of reform.

America should not have to confront a potential constitutional crisis every four years. We should have confidence that the rule of law will prevail in determining the occupant of our highest office. The ECA as it stands is woefully inadequate to provide that assurance.

There is broad agreement on the need for ECA reform. Proposals range from a broad, expansive bill that could be criticized as overly complicated and assuming a role for Congress beyond the Constitution’s limits, to a narrow, minimalist bill that could leave important problems unresolved by only making minor cosmetic changes.

There is a better middle course, built on a thorough consideration of the constitutional principles at stake. The ECA as it exists now is too flawed to save. Even if no substantive changes were to be made, a thorough rewrite is necessary to clarify the muddled and confusing language that Congress.....

Three Ways to Combat Propaganda at Your Local Library - Intellectual Takeout

We’re almost through Pride Month. While many aspects of this “celebration” come off as tasteless at best, what’s truly sickening about it is the indoctrination efforts this event directs toward young children.

Public libraries, where drag queen story hours and pride displays are all too common, are one of the primary venues for this indoctrination. Many of the books on display in children’s areas present explicitly sexual material, like the one at a local library showing someone’s naked backside in a pride parade and informing children that some people prefer not to wear clothes.

But these things aren’t just issues during the month of June; propaganda at the library is a year-round problem. Our family has found it increasingly difficult to check books out from the children’s section without accidentally taking home an LGBTQ propaganda piece. For example, my kids love books about animals, so they grabbed And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, the cover illustration showing two adult penguins with their cute, fuzzy chick. Turns out, the two penguins are a pair of bonded males at the zoo who just want a chick of their own. The zookeeper provides them with an egg so they can be dads together. Pretty subtle.

Biden Administration Cancels $6 Billion in Student Loan Debt

The Department of Education last week announced it was canceling $6 billion in student loan debt and issuing refunds for attendees of shuttered for-profit colleges as part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit.

The plaintiffs in Theresa Sweet v. Miguel Cardona filed for debt relief under the "borrower defense to loan repayment" program. Created by the Obama administration, borrower defense allows the Education Department to forgive the federal student loan debt of students who can show they were defrauded by the school they attended. Under the Trump administration, the Education Department's evaluation of borrower defense applications slowed to a halt. In response, former students of the now-defunct Corinthian Colleges sued Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for "unlawfully withholding or unreasonably delaying action on Plaintiffs' applications." Miguel Cardona, President Joe Biden's education secretary, then became the defendant.

Under the terms of the settlement, the Department of Education will forgive roughly $6 billion in loans for 200,000 attendees of dozens of technical schools and for-profit colleges. The settlement also requires the Department of Education to reimburse borrowers who already made payments or even paid off the entirety of their loans. It is not clear how many borrowers covered by the settlement will receive loan forgiveness for outstanding debt and how many will receive full reimbursement for debt they already repaid. When asked to clarify how many borrowers were in each category, a Department of Education spokesperson said the agency does not comment on ongoing litigation.

Oregon Teachers Say They're Rooting Out Another Behavior That Promotes White Supremacy

Of course, right. Anything I don't like is racism, sexism, or misogyny. It's also white supremacy. It's why the left isn't taken seriously anymore outside of cities or college campuses, and the folks who really get mad about this are the whitest folks on the planet.

Now, that's not always the case – but blaming racism on everything has run its course to the point where it's become a punchline. Yet, as long as woke psychos can find jobs, administrators, managers, and the like are going to have to deal with nonsense like this in the workplace.

Apparently, at one Oregon school, eye-rolling is a means of upholding white supremacy (via Fox News):

Oregon teachers at the Errol Hassell Elementary School sent school administrators an email claiming that eye-rolling directed at a principal, among other alleged actions they observed, is an example of a "harmful practice rooted in White supremacy" that is happening in the workplace.

The educators from the Beaverton School District said in an email on May 27 that they had become of aware of a "rumor" that Principal Cynthia Lam Moffett was on the chopping block.

CONSPIRACY ALERT: Dem Alleges Capitalist-Evangelical Plot To ‘Dumb Down’ the Youth - LOL

Iowa Democratic Senate candidate Mike Franken says there's a Republican-led, capitalist-evangelical plot to "dumb down" youth through "a war on education," designed to gain an electoral advantage in the years to come.

During a campaign event in Red Oak last week, Franken told voters Republicans are uniting "the über-capitalists … and the ultra-right evangelicals" on educational issues to "make people dumb and lemmings.".....

Little-Known Biden Staffer Finds ‘Big, Beautiful‘ Area To Hold Overflow Migrants

WASHINGTON, D.C.–A little-known and devastatingly handsome Biden staffer has given the administration a brilliant solution for their overcrowded migrant situation.

“You see this big, beautiful area down here? A lotta people are saying this is the perfect place for Mexicans,” he said pointing to the country just below the United States of America. “Call up the President of Mexico and tell him, ‘great news! We’re sending our best and brightest!’”

The plan outlined would immediately end the overflow problem, restore order along the border, and usher in a wave of positive press. But Kamala Harris was excited by a different angle.

“This blue country down here is not America. America bad!” she grunted before enthusiastically signing off on the idea.

Biden sat and stared at the presentation in deep thought. He stood up and tapped on the poster board. Finally, in a very serious tone, he said, “I don’t care for this episode of Sesame Street.” .....

Harris removes racist white stripes from US flag in time for 4th of July • Genesius Times

WASHINGTON, DC—Following up on a campaign promise to remove the racist white stripes from the US flag, President Vice President Kamala Harris announced the new flag to be flown this 4th of July. She also has stated that the holiday no longer celebrates independence, which is racist, but instead, dependence on the state.

“When I’m president, I’m going to sign an executive order to remove the white stripes from the US flag in the first 100 days,” she tweeted while campaigning for president.

Now that Harris is president for all intents and purposes despite the fact that no one wanted her to be president, she is taking on the biggest problems in America including racism.

Harris has also demanded reparations from herself for the slaves her ancestors owned.

The US flag will eventually transition completely to remove the white stars as well as the blue star field to be replaced with yellow stars in accordance with the new Chinese orverlords:

BREAKING: NASA discovers evidence of ancient, microbial racism on Mars

WASHINGTON, DC—NASA’s Curiosity rover has uncovered ancient deposits of microbial racism on the Red Planet, opening up the possibility of interplanetary wokeness.

The discovery was revealed by NASA researchers in a highly-anticipated announcement on Thursday, and details have been published in the journal Science.

The revelations build on a similar announcement made by NASA in 2014, where scientists confirmed that they had discovered chlorinated bigotry on the planet for the first time. This latest evidence, however, is far more compelling.

The Curiosity rover discovered the racism preserved in 3-billion-year-old mudstones at the Gale Crater. The hate speech was located in the first layers of rock, some four miles away from where the chlorinated molecules had been found.

“All white supremacy is made from these basic racist microbes,” NASA researcher Anita Labotamie said during the press announcement, suggesting that all racism may have come from Mars.....

Recruiters are sick of the boring, same old preprepared answers – stand out by answering questions using interpretative dance or fire breathing.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Simply respond with ‘dead’. It’s mysterious, and strangely intimidating.

Do you have any flaws? ‘Is being flawless a flaw, well then I guess that would be mine’ – boring, predictable.

Why not try ‘I’m generally very weak of spirit and easily dominated so if you’re looking to exploit someone and work them to the bone without so much as a disgruntled sigh, I’m your guy’ – companies love this answer.

Show how much you want the job by murdering any other applicants who are waiting to interview too.

If conducting the interview over Zoom, be sure to click the keys on your computer as loudly as possible when you’re panic Googling an answer to a question – this way the interviewer knows you have excellent research skills.

Biden Prevented From Wandering Too Far With Handy New Toddler Leash | Babylon Bee

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre brought out President Biden during Thursday's press briefing to demonstrate the president's new toddler leash. According to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, the presser was organized to boost the American people's confidence in Biden, who has wandered off numerous times.

Press members could not hide how impressed they were with Biden's stylish new attire. "Oohs" and "ahhs" filled the briefing room. Several women claimed the president looked "adorable."

CNN's Caitlan Collins pressed the secretary for more details. "What designer created this masterpiece for the president?"

Jean-Pierre quickly explained that the monkey toddler backpack/leash combo was purchased at Wal-Mart and retails for $13.99. "The president is singularly focused on building back better and this new leash helps him keep his attention on where it belongs: helping the American people raise more tax dollars to send to Ukraine," she said.
