Volume 26 | FEBUARY 2022
Recognizing Black History Month
February is Black History Month. This is not only an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Black History but also to continue working to support Black communities and work to undo the impacts of systemic racism and oppression, including the ways in which Black people are disproportionately impacted by certain health conditions or face barriers within the health care system.

As part of our commitment to supporting Black caregivers and communities, the OCO has compiled a new page of resources specifically to support the needs of Black caregivers.

If you know someone who could benefit from these resources, we invite you to share this page with them.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week
The first week of February is Eating Disorder Awareness Week. For caregivers supporting someone with an eating disorder, this is an opportunity to draw awareness to the existence of stigma and barriers to accessing care and support.

As a caregiver, it may seem like you are constantly fighting an uphill battle. Eating Disorders are extremely complex and impact not only the care recipient but also family members in ways that are hard to imagine. As caregivers, the ability to look after oneself is tested every day.

Learning to expect the unexpected and to approach each day as a new beginning has been key for webinar presenters, Wendy Preskow and Michelle D’Amico, in navigating their caregiving journeys. As Wendy and Michelle share their respective caregiving experiences in this webinar, attendees will learn about the caregiver’s role in supporting recovery from an eating disorder and some helpful strategies and resources. Strategies and resources for caring for the caregiver will also be explored.

On February 3 the OCO is proud to partner with the National Initiative for Eating Disorders (NIED) to present Caregiving and Eating Disorders: Expect the Unexpected.

Register below to join us for this exclusive webinar. This presentation will be in English and available as a recording after the event.

Jeanne's Caregiver Story
Jeanne’s 99-year-old mom has dementia and lives in a retirement home in Brampton, about 2 hours away from where Jeanne lives. Although Jeanne doesn’t provide direct aid such as managing medications and assisting with bathing and dressing, she is responsible for coordinating much of her mother’s care, which comes with its own set of challenges.

As the main point of contact with her mother’s retirement home and her mom’s Power of Attorney, Jeanne continually makes decisions for her mother and advocates on her behalf. “I constantly worry about doing what’s best for her,” she says. “I have never felt less confident in a job.”

Jeanne’s top 4 tips for caregivers:
1. It’s OK to take time for yourself and focus on self-care. It’s important to look after your own emotional and psychological well-being.
2. Educate yourself – find out what support and resources are available.
3. Connect with other caregivers – empathy and compassion can be healing.
4. Ask for help.

February 24: Healthy Sleeping Habits - Helping You Get A Good Night's Sleep

Sleep is one of the three main pillars of good health, together with healthy eating and physical activity. As caregivers, stress and worry can interfere with good sleep as we worry about those we care for, and to run through our endless caregiving responsibilities.

Join this webinar to learn from sleep expert Alanna McGinn about how to incorporate proper sleep hygiene into your daily life, with tips and strategies to quiet your mind, shorten sleep onset, and strengthen your relationship with sleep.

*This presentation will be in English and available as a recording after the event.
March 10: Caregiving and Chronic Liver Disease: Challenges, Insights and Support

As a caregiver of someone living with a chronic illness, such as chronic liver disease, you may share many of the same emotions as your care recipient, such as fear, isolation, and anger. Providing care over a long period of time can also lead to caregiver burnout which is why it is important to care for yourself.

In collaboration with the Canadian Liver Foundation, the OCO will be presenting this special webinar on caregiving & chronic illness. We invite you to join our expert speakers, Dr. Angela Cheung and caregiver Evelyne Chenard, as they discuss the challenges of chronic disease, specifically chronic liver disease. You will gain insights into the patient and caregiver journey, and learn about the support services available.

*This presentation will be in English and available as a recording after the event.
