Since my last newsletter, I have had a very interesting and informative meeting with Interim President of Cape Cod Community College, Dr. Ellen Kennedy.
She brings a wealth of experience with her, as she recently retired from 14 years as President of the Berkshire Community College.
| | | |
This experience has an important relationship to us, as she was an advocate for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at BCC, an organization very much like ALL at CCCC. At our meeting, she asked all the pertinent questions and offered to connect us with resources to help address areas identified in our Long-Range Plan.
Dr. Kennedy was excited to hear about our various initiatives involving the College, such as food drives for its pantry, using our mailing list to support campus activities, and establishing a relationship with their Media Center. Of particular interest was the invitation to CCCC students to attend the ALL class “Aging, Community, and Our Place” coordinated by Maggie French.
She was impressed by ALL’s upcoming 40th anniversary—a milestone that reflects our first 15 years as a CCCC program, and the past 25 years as a separate organization, while maintaining a strong partnership with the College.
And, for those of you that have been asking, she agreed to have the College replace the carpeting in our suite next summer!
We are fortunate that Dr. Kennedy chose to take a detour in her retirement from the west of the Commonwealth to the east, bringing her leadership to our partner organization this year. We look forward to working with her and others at the College to strengthen our already strong ties.

You might also know friends, classmates and others who would like to teach, but have not yet done so in our program. Our committee members are eager to help develop an idea into a course at ALL. Write or call us and present an idea for a course.
We also encourage current coordinators to identify students in their classes who have demonstrated a keen knowledge of a subject of interest and speak to them about offering a course for the spring semester.
Dates for the spring semester are as follows:
- 12-week courses: January 25, 2027 – April 26, 2027
- First 6-week courses: January 25, 2027 – March 8, 2027

A New World Order
Special Event - December 2, 2026
| |
Will there be a global conflict, as some suggest? Will we be engulfed in a financial crisis? Will AI run amok? These questions—and their possible answers—arise from the emerging world order of competing spheres of influence. In reality, they are spheres of weakness, and their very weakness has made such troubling possibilities conceivable.
Plan to join us on December 2 at 3 p.m. in the LoRusso Building Atrium as Stew Goodwin explores A New World Order.
After a 35-year career in international investments in New York City, Stew retired to Cape Cod in 1989. He has since devoted time to nonprofit organizations, public service in elected office and more than 20 years of teaching at ALL.
To reserve your seats, please contact the ALL office at lifelonglearning@capecod.edu

Introducing Dave Gilliland
"The Wonder Of Flight - Part 1"
Fall 2026
| | This article is part of an ongoing series of articles featuring ALL members and course coordinators. Please let us know the names of individuals you would like to know more about. | | |
Dave Gilliland first heard of ALL while walking his greyhound dog in the neighborhood. Paul Arnold, a neighbor and good friend, introduced him to ALL and encouraged him to participate in the program.
| | | |
Acting on that advice, Dave and his wife began taking courses and participating in ALL activities when not traveling. He enjoyed several courses with Jim Coogan and Larry Brown.
It didn’t take long before Dave was co-coordinating a popular course for ALL on “Great Decisions” with Paul Arnold. They offered this class twice. The natural next step was for Dave to begin thinking about “going solo” and teaching a course on his own where he could share his personal interest and enthusiasm about flying.
As a retired commercial pilot and naval navigator, Dave considers flying one of mankind’s greatest achievements. He has always loved airplanes and balloons. He flew for Delta Airlines for 33 years and served in the Navy (active and reserve) for 20 years. Building on that personal experience, he prepared for his “solo” course with research on the history of flight. He and his wife made trips to multiple aviation museums.
Dave found the information he wanted to cover was extensive enough to offer two separate six-week courses. The first course is currently being offered, titled "The Wonder Of Flight - Part 1." The course traces the history of flight up through 1939. He plans to offer a second six-week course in spring 2027. That course will cover aviation just before the outbreak of World War II to the present time.
Dave has the wonderful ability to bring the history of flight alive by combining technical information with media and engaging human interest stories. He talks, for example, of Alberto Santos-Dumont, a wealthy Brazilian aeronaut, sportsman and inventor, who was fascinated with lighter/heavier-than-air aircraft at the turn of the century.
Dumont became a Parisian legend, known worldwide for flying his airship No. 6 around the Eiffel Tower in 1901. He was also known for flying over Paris in his sizable dirigible, descending to the ground and anchoring the dirigible above his favorite cafe while
| | |
enjoying an aperitif. In addition, Dave talks of others who risked, and sometimes lost, their lives in an era before seatbelts and safety measures were standard.
If you want to learn more about "The Wonder of Flight - Part 2" be sure to register for that course during spring registration.
In the meantime, remember to tell a friend about ALL.

ALL Fall Social - A Wonderful Evening

Redefining Age:
Super Seniors Podcast Series Continues
| | |
This podcast series, produced by ALL’s Joan Freedman and hosted by Jay Green, highlights these remarkable individuals—our Super Seniors—whose lives demonstrate that value, purpose and achievement are not defined by chronological age.
Please watch and enjoy the fourth installment of this series, which illustrates that age is more than just a number and that many older adults continue to contribute, create, lead and inspire!

We're delighted to see so many of our members enjoying the ALL library in our lobby! Your love of reading is a large part of what lifelong learning is all about.
We're noticing, however, that many books aren't making their way back to the shelves, and the inventory is running low.
We encourage you to return books once you've finished reading them and to donate books of your own to keep our collection full and robust.
Together, we can make sure there's always something of interest to read for every member of our program.
Thank you for helping our library thrive!
