Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death--
even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8)
This is the beginning of what we call the “Christ Hymn” from Philippians. It is our Epistle Reading this week. It, and the prologue of the Gospel of John are my two favorite selections from scripture. Together, and separately, they work to remind us that the entire life of Jesus was a sacrifice, not just his passion and crucifixion. Imagine the power of the fierce love that the Word of God held for us. It was enough to convince Jesus to give up the full power and position of heaven to dwell among us, as one of us. Rather that exploiting his power, he gave it up, and took human form amongst the poorest in the societies of the time. His entire life was one humbling thing after another, seemingly meant to push his act of divine kenosis (the giving up of his power) to the most extreme levels, one moment after another. It all begs the question, “If God is so willing to give up everything, why shouldn’t I be so willing as well?”
This Sunday is Palm Sunday. Like Jesus, we arrive to our worship in triumph and depart in silence. I ask that you keep space for silence and prayer this week. Please join us for the Triduum, the great three days, as we follow Jesus to the ultimate depth of his humility for us, accepting even death on a cross. The schedule is included in this eTower.
Please also sign up here to bring a little something to share for our Maundy Thursday meal and also plan on taking an hour of time, clicking here, to watch overnight with Jesus from Thursday evening into Good Friday morning. If you do so, I promise you that Easter will seem even brighter. Don’t just rush to resurrection, sit in the holy discomfort of what Jesus endured, with your parish family, together.
I’ll see you this Sunday, and Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, and Easter Vigil Saturday Night, and for the great feat of Easter that will surely bring many visitors to worship with us that glorious morning. Together, let us empty ourselves and step into the mystery of our redemption.
Pax,
Tim+

Office Wellness Sabbatical
|
|
Following the week of Easter, from April 18th – 22nd, the office will be closed for a short but vital Wellness Sabbatical.
During this time, staff will be encouraged to rest, refresh, and refocus after two years of pandemic and a busy holiday season. The Diocese has encouraged the vestries of each parish in Rhode Island to provide this time in response to the loss of time away in the pandemic and the extra work that has been entailed. We thank our Vestry for supporting this need and look forward to seeing you Sunday, April 24th.
In case of an emergency, Canon Tim can be contacted on his cell phone at: 401-236-4831.
