Dear Tulane University,

Move-In for first-year students is now just a month away! Move-in Shipping and Mail packets were mailed to students' home addresses recently. The window for receiving shipped packages at Tulane opens July 15. When you're preparing your shipments and packing items you'll bring with you, keep in mind that Tulane residence halls do not have general storage closets for luggage. Students must store their luggage in their own room (typically under their bed or in their closet) so having something small, lightweight, or collapsible is best.

Move-In Guides will be available on students' housing portals in a week or so. Housing and Residence Life will send a message to students' Tulane email addresses when the guide is available on their portal.

One thing that students should not bring to campus is a car. According to Tulane's Parking Rules and Regulations, first-year student residents are not allowed to register their vehicles and cannot utilize campus parking areas. Students can find information about Tulane's fixed shuttle lines and other transportation options on this website.

Protecting Your Student's College Investments

Tulane's Office of Enterprise Risk Services offers the following information on two programs to help protect your student:

Tuition Protection: Tulane partners with GradGuard Tuition Protection to reimburse up to 100% of tuition costs during a mid-semester withdrawal due to a covered illness, injury, psychological/mental health condition, or the death of the tuition payer. It also covers pre-existing conditions. This insurance protection product can be purchased for the entire year or per semester in various increments to tailor the amount paid for tuition, room/board, and fees from savings, student loans, college savings plans, or other means. For more information, see https://gradguard.com/welcome/tulane.

Student Property: Protect your student's personal belongings against loss, theft, disappearance, or damages, regardless of whether they live on-campus or off-campus with very low premiums for $5,000 of coverage along with low deductibles. This includes protection for their cell phones, bicycles, computers, clothing, household items, and other valuables. Tulane offers information for several different insurance products as follows: https://www.collegestudentinsurance.com.

For additional questions on any of the above protection products, please contact Tulane's Office of Enterprise Risk Services at 504-865-5653.

Greener Packing and Move-In Practices

Tulane's Office of Sustainability offers these ideas and resources for a more environmentally friendly move-in.

Lighten Your Load

Overwhelmed by the packing process? Too much stuff can be stressful. Our Green Up Your Move-In guide offers tips on what items to pack, what not pack, and other ways to lighten your load during move-in.

Some Basics

  • Only pack and ship essentials.
  • Pack according to season. Swap seasonal items during school breaks.
  • Do make sure your student packs good rain gear -- a lightweight rain jacket, waterproof shoes of some kind, and an umbrella. Better yet, pack two umbrellas--a large one and a small one fits in a backpack or purse.
  • Pro tip: Clothes for cold weather are often not needed until after Thanksgiving Break.
  • Pack fewer t-shirts. Students receive several graphic t-shirts over the academic year.
  • Unbox small items at home and consolidate them into the larger packages you ship or bring to reduce your trash and recycling loads on campus arrival.
  • Shop at the Trash to Treasure Move-in Sale for small furnishings and household items.

Items to Pack

  • Reusable water bottle and reusable coffee tumbler to avoid disposable plastics.
  • Surge protector that your student can turn off to conserve electricity.
  • Small hand towel to reduce use of disposable paper towels.

Items to Leave Behind

  • Shared items for student rooms. Encourage students to wait and coordinate with their roommate for these items.
  • Microwave and mini fridge. Each residence hall room already has a combination microwave/mini-fridge.
  • Mattress topper. Wait until students arrive to assess whether a topper is needed. Most residence halls have double-sided memory foam mattresses. You can check in the descriptions here.

Plan to Take Advantage of the Annual Trash to Treasure Move-in Sale

Be sure to advocate that your student visits the Trash to Treasure sale! At the T2T sale your student can purchase gently used hangers, mirrors, lamps, small furniture, electronics, drying racks, storage options, décor, and more! Tulane branded shirts and swag are free!

Trash to Treasure is a student organization dedicated to reducing waste from our annual move-in and move-out cycles. Trash to Treasure collects and sells lightly used items donated during residence hall move-out each year. The items are sold at a reduced cost and the proceeds are donated to local charities. 2024 marks 10 years since the first Trash to Treasure Sale. Follow tulanetrashtotreasure on Instagram. Join in the fun!

Resource Spotlight: Success Coaching

Success Coaching is a personalized service that supports students in achieving their academic and personal goals. Some of the subjects that coaches explore with students include motivation, time-management, organizing/planning, social life, self-care, accountability, and so much more. Coaches do this by providing students with reflective questions, feedback, and encouragement, while also co-creating actionable steps towards progress.

Tulane students have a wide variety of resources across campus designed to provide a collective and holistic support network. Success Coaching fits within that network and can be best described by differentiating itself from other key supports on campus. For example, students looking for guidance on course selections, degree requirements, and academic policies would want to meet with their Academic Advisor. For those looking for subject/course specific instructions or help in specific fields, it would be best to engage with peer tutoring through the Academic Learning and Tutoring Center. For students looking for mental health support that may involve subjects such as exploring the past and how emotional or psychological trauma impacts their lives, then engaging with a counselor/therapist within Counseling Center could be the best course of action. In comparison, a coach explores behaviors, values, motivators, self-awareness, and some emotions. Success Coaching is primarily focused on the present and future, with a concentration on time-limited, action-oriented results.

You can find more information and resources about what we offer here. Success coaching is free, and students can schedule as frequently as they would like. Students who are interested in meeting with a Success Coach can use the link here to schedule with any coach or find a full list of all the coaches here to schedule with whomever they feel would be the best fit!

Fall Part-Time Job Fair

Planning Your Student's Travel Back and Forth to Tulane

When you're planning your student's travel to and from Tulane, there are several points to remember. We strongly recommend that you wait until after the final course register/add date for each semester to book travel home at the end of each semester. Classes have different final exam dates and times, so it's best to wait until your student's class schedule is finalized. Ask your student to consult their course syllabi before booking flights. The register/add deadline is Friday, August 30, 2024, for fall semester.

You can find the university holidays, students' breaks, and Tulane's Religious Observance Policy on the Office of the Registrar's Academic Calendar. Use the term/year tabs to open the correct calendar.

To plan travel for the end of fall and the beginning and end of spring, it's important to note the opening and closing dates for residence halls explained in the 2024 - 2025 Housing Agreement.

For the fall 2024 semester, residence hall rooms must be vacated by NOON on Sunday, December 15, 2024, or 24 hours after the Resident's last exam, whichever occurs first, unless otherwise specified by the agreement. You can find other important dates for the residence halls here: https://housing.tulane.edu/important-dates.

All residence halls remain open during Fall, Thanksgiving, Mardi Gras, Easter, and Spring Breaks. The residence halls are closed during the Winter Break between fall and spring semester.
