Managing burnout: Upcoming programs for journalists to thrive in 2024

Journalists are likely to face stressors from many directions this year, including the demands of constant deadlines, industry-wide financial turmoil, and an uncertain election season. Research shows these stressors affect journalists’ mental health.

The National Press Club Journalism Institute is offering two programs this month to help journalists manage burnout and stress. We hope you will join us for the following:

Friday, Jan. 12, 11:30 am ET: A free webinar focused on practical tips and effective methods for journalists and newsroom leaders to address stress and burnout. Participants will learn about mental health toolkits for journalists; find a network of like-minded journalists to talk about mental health; and gain strategies for garnering their leadership’s support for mental health.

Wednesday, Jan. 31, 5:30 pm ET: An in-person gentle movement and breathing class with the Institute’s Director of Training Bara Vaida aimed at reducing tension in the body, relaxing the mind, and encouraging connection with fellow hard-working journalists. Vaida is a 500-hour, Yoga Alliance-certified yoga instructor, with specialized training in meditation, stress-reduction, and therapeutics. This session will take place at the National Press Club. Tickets are $5 for NPC members and $15 for the general public.

One strategy to improve your organization’s culture

“For people who are in positions of leadership, ask your teams what they need. Start having a lot more conversations. Try to get a handle on where you where your team thinks the culture is, where it should be, and to really sit with that. Ask yourself, ‘What did I perceive the culture to be versus what they perceived the culture to be?’ If you’re not in leadership, but you have big ideas about the culture, voice those questions or concerns.”

-- Amanda Zamora, co-founder and publisher of The 19th*, excerpt from Q&A with RJI fellow Jennifer Mizgata, How this startup newsroom has worked to build a ‘culture of care’
