Sheriffs Rise and Shine to Serve Their Communities

Once again, Sheriff’s Offices have gone beyond the call of duty so citizens in need can enjoy the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Following are examples of their generosity:
Well stuffed — From the Albany County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Craig Apple:
We pulled it off, with 2,185 Thanksgiving meals out the door! When it comes to logistics my staff rules!
Thank you to everyone who assisted – all the volunteer drivers and my staff who delivered all those meals, which consisted of turkey, gravy, veggies, stuffing and a cheesecake dessert.
Please remember the public safety personnel who will be working through the holidays!

Driven by the Holiday Spirit — From the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Robert Milby:
A big shout out to Corrections Officer Lyndsi Wernert (pictured), who organized an agency-wide food donation for Helpful Hearts, a thrift store and a food pantry in the Town of Lyons. Just in time for Thanksgiving!
Thank you to all of our staff who donated and to Corrections Officer Wernert for organizing this event, helping those in need in our community!! Lyndsi also organized a Christmas gift toy drive for our local kids, which was just as successful as the one she did last year.

For the Good — From the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Michael Filicetti:
Our office participated in the annual Shop with a Cop event in partnership with a local Walmart. Dozens of NSCO volunteers and more than 20 children took part in a holiday shopping spree and were treated to a private lunch at the store.
In addition, we are supporting the 14th annual Western New York Peanut Butter and Jelly drive. This resource has the ability to feed families for days at a time, and we are proud to deliver hundreds of jars to food banks throughout the area. All personnel who take part do so on a volunteer basis.
Happy Holidays to all from Sheriff Michael Filicetti and the staff of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office!

“Hooping” It Up — Essex County
Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Justin Bobbie (at left in photo) demonstrates his hula hoop technique to a potential buyer at last year’s Shop with a Cop program. The Sheriff’s Office invited 20 youth to participate in this year’s event, which was held in early December.
Piling it On — The Office also joined the annual Stuff the Cruiser campaign (with participants shown in photo at right), partnering with other Essex County Law Enforcement groups to collect toys around the County, which are then given to municipal agencies for distribution to families in need.
A Most Wonderful Time — Members of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Criminal, Corrections and Civil Divisions joined forces with other local groups for its Fifth Annual Shop with a Sheriff event.
Working with elementary schools throughout the County, the Sheriff’s Office invites 36 children to take part each year. They purchase toys with money raised by donations from Deputies and Corrections Officers who participated in the “Beards for Bucks” Fundraiser in November.
Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood (pictured, far left) and Lieutenant Jon Black of the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division flank a youngster with his purchase this year. Well done!

Joy and Laughter — From the Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office and Sheriff Todd Baxter:
It is a rich tradition for Deputies and professional staff to purchase gifts and gift cards for those children and adolescents who may not otherwise receive a gift during the holidays.
Money for the gifts not only comes from staff donations, but from the generous support of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Foundation, without which this event would not be possible. We partner with seniors from local centers, joyfully spending the day wrapping gifts, laughing, eating holiday cookies and getting to know our senior citizens. Some even sing carols. In the above photo, Deputy Chris Chambry (left) and Deputy Todd Thurston share in the fun of the season.
No matter how you celebrate, this is truly the reason for the season. Happy Holidays from Sheriff Baxter and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office!

A Busy Season — The Orange County Sheriff’s Office annual pajama drive is in full gear (at right), collecting dozens of pajamas for youth ages 1 to 15. They are donated to the Regional Economic Action Program of Orange County for distribution to local communities.
Food for All — The Office joined local agencies for the Thanksgiving Outreach program, providing food and essentials to people who visit local food pantries. Above (l to r) are Sheriff Paul Arteta, Barbara Kuczyra (Easter Seals NY) and Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden.
Never Forget — In addition to its two holiday toy drives, the Office is also a proud supporter and participant in the Wreaths Across America Campaign, each year laying holiday wreaths at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery and other locations in honor of our fallen heroes.
Ho Ho Ho-Orleans! — The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office participated again this year in several community events – Shop with A Cop, Medina’s Parade of Lights and Santa’s Christmas Parade in the Town of Albion.
These events help raise the profile of the Sheriff’s Office and the work it does to serve County residents.
Pictured (l to r) are Orleans County Sheriff Christopher Bourke, the Man of the Season and Deputy Sheriff Savannah Tackley.

Gifts that Keep on Giving . . . And Keep on Going — Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol (far

from Clinton Tractor, posing with the three T8 farm tractors that will be gifted to youth.
Once again, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Foundation partnered with Clinton Tractor to make Christmas brighter for the children in the region. Three New Holland T8 rechargeable farm tractors for youth were distributed. One was auctioned off on a local radio show with all funds raised going to Operation Sunshine, another was donated to a different radio station for an annual toy drive and the third delivered to a local child dealing with a significant medical condition. Two of the tractors were purchased by the Foundation, with the third donated by Clinton Tractor.

The Sheriff’s Office continued its holiday tradition of teaming up with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, John C. Devereaux Division, to deliver 200 turkeys and 5,000 pounds of potatoes to 12 different food pantries and organizations. Pictured at right are Sheriff Maciol (third from right) with representatives from the Utica Food Pantry and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a success.

The Joy of Toys — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with their Fire and EMS partners and multiple other agencies within Saratoga County and beyond, took part in the 10th annual Convoy for Tots, promoting the mission of Capital Region Toys for Tots, an organization that serves over 160,000 children annually in the Capital Region.
“We’re community-oriented — that’s what it’s all about, our community,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo. “We are going to get as many toys as we can and hopefully put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces for some young kids.”
The convoy consisted of more than 120 vehicles (above) traveling a major state highway to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, where staff and other volunteers (top photo) unloaded all the toys that had been collected for the holiday drive.
Bringing Cheer Home for the Holidays — Sheriff Jeff Smith (third from right), members of his team from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and volunteers took part in the Sixth Annual “Adopt a Family for Thanksgiving.” Deputies delivered food to families so they could enjoy a heartfelt Thanksgiving meal. Partnering with the community in initiatives like these allows the Sheriff’s Office to extend a helping hand to neighbors, making a positive impact in Montgomery County.
Thank you to all Sheriff's Offices and their staff for working to create a happy and healthy holiday season for their citizens, and all the best in the New Year to those who serve and protect.

Essex County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Kaycee Kolodzey (above) reacts to the response of toys and gifts donated to the Office's annual Stuff the Cruiser event earlier this month.
Sgt. Kolodzey (below left) also participated in a version of “Secret Santa,” where instead of tickets she handed out cash anonymously donated to the Sheriff's Office by several individuals in the community.
“So actually what we did is when we pulled people over, instead of tickets we gave people money,” she explained.
Each envelope contained either $50 or $100.
During her shift Sergeant Kolodzey gave out six envelopes, totaling about $350.
More was handed out on subsequent days, as the amount donated was nearly $1,000.
