By tradition in the Episcopal church, various colors are used for the vestments and altar hangings during the different seasons and feasts of the Church Year.
WHITE is the color of Jesus' burial garments and is used on the Feasts of our Lord, Feasts of Saints who were not martyrs, and Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary. White is used for Christmas and Easter as well as for marriages and sometimes funerals. White symbolizes joy, purity, and new beginnings
PURPLE/VIOLET is used for penitential occasions, during Lent, and at Requiems or the Burial of the Dead. Purple symbolizes royalty, repentance, and preparation for the coming of Christ. (Note: many churches use a Lenten Array (unbleached linen) during Lent in place of purple.)
ROYAL BLUE is used during Advent. Blue symbolizes royalty, the coming of the King, the night sky before the dawn, and Mary.
