Is it possible to put a price on your dog's life? If you're anything like us, you were quick to answer "NO!" to this question. After all, your dog's life is priceless, right?
But what would happen if your dog was wrongfully killed and the courts had to decide on reparations? How much compensation would be fair if you lost custody of your pup during a divorce? At times like these, a monetary value for a dog's life must be determined. But how is this possible? And can it ever be fair?
Putting a Price on Fido's Life
A team of researchers from the University of Oklahoma have put
a price tag of $10,000
on the average dog's life. To arrive at this figure, they conducted a large-scale survey of dog owners in the US. The dog owners were asked a series of questions to determine how much they'd be willing to pay to reduce the risk of their dog dying.
In one example question, the dog owners were asked how much they'd pay for a vaccine that would reduce their dog's risk of dying from a particular virus from 12% to 2%. To make things even more complicated, the researchers had to factor in other variables like the dog's age and life expectancy. Similar methods have been used to calculate the
value of human life
(if you're wondering, the average value is estimated to be $10 million).
Is This Figure Fair?
Many dog owners would argue that $10,000 is far too low a value to place on their dog's life. But is it really fair? It's a difficult question to answer, but the figure is pretty close to estimates of how much people
spend on a dog throughout its lifetime
.
Of course, nobody wants to put a value on their dog's life. Given our emotional investment in their well-being, they’re neither disposable nor replaceable. In other words, they’re increasingly regarded as having what our laws call “intrinsic value.” That being said, no amount of money can ever make up for losing a beloved companion. But we hope that the estimated value of a dog's life helps ensure fairer legal proceedings.
While we hope we never have to actually determine the value of our dogs, we know that for pet lovers, one thing is certain, every dog we’ve had has made an immeasurable impact on our lives, and we consider their value as priceless.
