Halloween Safety
See and Be Seen
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means more kids out earlier, more families on the sidewalks, and more cars on neighborhood streets as the sun sets just before 6 p.m. It's one of the best nights of the year for kids, and also one of the riskiest. According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
The biggest factor is simple: it's dark, and people are hard to see. Here's how families and drivers across our district can keep the night fun and safe.

1.58 Million Pounds of Kayem Foods Products Recalled
Kayem Foods Inc. is recalling about 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and deli meats, because they may have been stored at unsafe temperatures. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) classified it as a Class I recall, its highest risk level.
The recall covers more than 100 products, according to news coverage, including hot dogs, bacon, sausage, turkey breasts, and hams sold through retail stores, wholesale clubs, and foodservice operators. Reports name brands such as Al Fresco, DeCosta, Essem, Genoa, Jordan's, Kirschner, McKenzie Natural Artisan Deli, Meisterchef, Schonland's Foods, and Triple M.
No illnesses have been confirmed. Still, if you shop for these products, it's worth checking your refrigerator and freezer now.

Free Vaccines for Children
Offering Free Flu & COVID Vaccines
Flu season is here, and the Uncas Health District is making it easier for families to protect their children. Our nurses can give free flu and COVID vaccines to children ages 6 months to 18 years, right in our office.
Vaccines are among the simplest ways to keep kids healthy and limit the spread of illness in classrooms, daycares, and homes. Getting vaccinated now helps children stay in school and keeps them from passing illness to grandparents, newborns, and others who are more vulnerable.

Additionally, our Mobile Health Team provides in-home flu vaccinations for homebound individuals. A public health nurse comes to your door, so there’s no transportation to arrange and no waiting room.
