A new life is blooming after their move

It wasn’t easy for Art and Kay Tuch to make the decision to move from their home of more than 50 years in Wallingford, but that’s what they did this past June when they settled into a villa in Kelso Court.

Art, a retired physician, and Kay, a former teacher and office manager for Art’s practice, knew from experience that caring for parents can take significant effort. Their two daughters won’t have to worry about that. “Right now, we might not need so much care, but if we did, it’s here,” Kay says.

When choosing a community they weighed five or six options in Delaware County and Montgomery County. They liked that White Horse Village was a nonprofit community, and one with natural spaces instead of high-rises. More importantly, though, they sensed a positive community spirit. “We had heard from various people that everybody was so friendly and welcoming, and we found that to be true,” Kay reflects.

How to welcome more cultures:

Conversation brings insights

Residents and visitors often notice the warm and welcoming culture here. We’re trying to learn how to be even more inclusive, which is why the marketing team and resident members of the Marketing Advisory committee recently met with the Chowdhury family.

The connection came about through Sohini Chowdhury, whose son Aavi is a talented pianist and has performed here on multiple occasions. She graciously brought her parents, Aurobindo and Bratati, who were visiting from India, to chat with us about what Indian seniors would be looking for in a retirement community and how to create an environment that would make them feel welcome and comfortable.

It was an engaging conversation, says Dale Steffens, a member of the Marketing Advisory committee. They discussed topics like dining and food options, religion, the importance of family to Indian culture, and why it’s helpful when there are other people from a similar background. Dale remembers how the openness of the White Horse Village community attracted her when she was researching retirement options, and says the conversation with the Chowdhurys highlighted what to consider in welcoming an even broader cultural range.

“Sohini and her parents gave us such great insight into the Indian culture and how it is changing,” says Susan Abtouche, vice president of mission enhancement. She is planning to invite more people from other cultures to join the sales team for similar conversations.

A fresh new look for outdoor spaces

The newly completed park space outside our front entrance has come alive this summer with flowers and shrubs. Benches along the walk offer a perfect place to sit and reflect, or chat with friends heading for the Clubhouse.

Other areas nearby are also getting an update. Work is wrapping up on a new stone patio outside the Steeplechase restaurant, transforming that space into a sophisticated spot for outdoor dining or soaking up a little sunshine.

Progress on proposed new

neighborhood: Recent updates

We’re excited to be able to share new details about our proposal to build a new neighborhood at White Horse Village!

In August, the Edgmont Township Planning Commission accepted the sketch plan for the neighborhood, outlining 69 new independent living villas, three guest suites, and a community center. The next step is to submit the preliminary development application, which we aim to do by the end of the year.

If the township approves that application, we could move forward with construction by fall 2028, with a goal of finishing by early 2030. However, that timeline depends heavily on the approval process.

In the meantime, we’ve been gathering many valuable insights and suggestions for the new homes from listening sessions with Starting Gate Club members. They’ve provided their thoughts on preferences including ceiling heights, natural light, room layout, and more.

As we embarked on this project with ongoing major renovation of the kitchen and other key areas, we held an update meeting on August 20th with residents to review our community’s financial health. A key focus was planned financing in spring 2027 for renovations to healthcare, and potential refinancing of existing debt. Our strong financial position will allow us to remain fiscally healthy while using this financing for improvements.

Are you interested in joining the Starting Gate Club for priority access to newly built homes? Download an application or call 610-675-2054 for more details.

Life here comes with some definite perks: Forget raking leaves, arranging for trash pickup, or cutting up fallen branches. We even help with cleaning and laundry!

Your monthly fee includes a wide range of services. The Environmental Services team takes care of cleaning common spaces like the Clubhouse, and the housekeeping department will also deep clean your home every year at no cost.

The department also offers a weekly laundry service to residents in all parts of campus, with pickup and delivery. You don’t have to worry about linens and towels, either; we provide those.

Homeowner headaches are also on us. We’ll replace siding or roofing and maintain the building as needed. When snow or ice covers the sidewalks, you can sip hot coffee and watch out the window as maintenance crews take care of it.

Other services are available for a nominal fee. One of these is bi-weekly cleaning, with dusting, wiping down surfaces, polishing furniture, vacuuming, and mopping. You can also sign up for home care, which offers help with additional household tasks.

For more information, see the services and amenities page on our website.

Coffee Whiskey and Anise; Bee and Pumpkin; Cherry and Dark Ganache Ladybug: Quick, guess what these names describe? At a special wine and chocolate tasting in September, hosted by the Life Enrichment Team, Angela Sticco of John & Kira's Chocolates described the special notes of these chocolate flavors and paired them with several different wines.

Musical power couple Zhenni Li Cohen, pianist, and Matthew Cohen, violist, have played around the country and internationally. They brought their talents to an enthusiastic crowd in our auditorium in September.

Edgmont Community Day marked the public debut of our new food truck, The Mane Attraction, powered by the culinary team! Visitors enjoyed shrimp po’boys, sweet potato fries, chickpea salad, and more.

White Horse Village turned 37 in August! It was party time as we celebrated our community with dancing, anniversary treats, and a special dinner.

Visitors to our farm-to-table event learned about the resident-run Harvesters Garden and then enjoyed some of its produce at a special meal prepared by the dining team. Residents created centerpieces from flowers grown in the garden to complete the effect!

We’ve been glad to welcome some of you at Taste and Tour events throughout the year, like this one in July. These are great opportunities to see White Horse Village for yourself, meet residents, and chat with them over lunch. Interested in attending? Email the sales team for upcoming dates.

Talented young pianist Aavi Sircar first performed here three years ago when he was 11. We enjoyed his return visit!

Our traditional end-of-summer croquet tournament wrapped up a little before the Labor Day holiday this year. Bill Hibschman and Dale Steffens won the Mallet Mashers Division, then claimed the championship by defeating Bing Bortle and Howard Hartley of the Wicket Wackers Division. Bill is no stranger to the winner’s circle, as his team won last year’s contest as well.

Dinner trip participants recently enjoyed Opera Night at Fellini’s Cafe in Media.

We were able to step back into the early 1800s on our trip to the restored historic village of Sugartown, only a few minutes away from White Horse Village!
