Networks In Today's World
Over the past few weeks, we have received many questions regarding network security. With all that's going on in the world, there has been a far more persistent push to get people on top of their cyber security. While it's true that it's important to stay on top of this, there's no need to panic if you've already taken the time to build up a secure network; There may be some more things you could do to make it even more secure, but the security should be just as big of a deal now as it was a few months or even years ago.
What Should I Be Doing?
Among the minimum things in place most organizations should have are updates, antivirus, awareness of phishing and other email attacks, multi-factor authentication, backups, and strong password policies. Many of these are things that are covered in past editions of Tech Talk News (feel free to ask about these issues/lookup older issues on our website), but one that we have not recently discussed is antivirus. By now all Windows 7 PCs should have been replaced and the good news is that Windows 10 PCs have a built-in antivirus that's a solid option for home use. In a business environment, you may want a more stringent protection program, however, that includes things like web filtering and logging. Many organizations are already using most or all of these items on their own networks, but if you are missing any, feel free to reach out so we can discuss setting them up for you and/or verify that these things are in place.
If you want to look at adding even more security to your network, you could look at adding a spam filter, backups of Microsoft cloud 365 data, end-user education, or upgrading your firewall among other things.
Many of these items are gaining popularity and are being more widely adopted amongst organizations amid the increase in cloud and cyber usage as well as the recent global events.
