Virginia Indians Yesterday and Today
Participants in this fascinating program learned about the history of the Powhatan confederacy and other Virginia tribes that were not a part of the confederacy. Nellie Adkins and Chief Kevin Brown discussed the trials of Virginia Indians in the early part of the 20th century including Walter Plecker’s attempts to completely erase native culture from our society and contrasted his work to the advocacy of Frank Speck who tried to reunite the tribes of the confederacy. We heard how attempts to “kill the Indian and save the man” extended into the 50s as Indian boarding schools and the education system were the next phase in racist practices.

Our speakers also addressed the state of Virginia Indians in modern times. Attendees heard about the process to get federal recognition, working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In addition, Nellie and Kevin discussed which tribes are currently federally and state recognized as well as the difference between these two things and mention the tribute still paid to the Virginia governor each year. The conversation continued as we heard about efforts to bring the diaspora back into native communities.

COVID Protocols for Camp 2022
Wondering what Camp Chanco will look like this summer? We are thrilled that camp will look a little more “normal”! For the safety of our campers and staff we do still plan to still implement some of our COVID-19 protocols. Here's what you can expect at Camp Chanco for our 2022 season:

  • Testing: Campers and staff will be required to provide results of a negative PCR test prior to the start of camp 
  • Meals: Campers will eat indoors in the dining hall this summer by campsite cohort 
  • Masks: All campers are being asked to bring masks in case they are needed. Masking will be optional outdoors. 
  • Outdoor Activities: We will hold as many activities outdoors as possible, and will return to camp-wide activities again this summer.
  • Vaccinations: Vaccinations will be required for all Chanco counselors; Vaccinations are highly recommended for all campers and campers will be asked to provide their vaccination status as a part of their immunization record
  • In alignment with CDC and American Camp Association policies, those exposed to Covid whose vaccination status is not up to date will be required to quarantine at home following any exposure to COVID-19; those who are fully vaccinated may remain on site with symptoms monitored unless they test positive.

Camper Pick-up and Drop-off
We are so excited to welcome our campers back for another amazing summer of laughter, memories and friends! While you are busy preparing, we wanted to give you a quick run down of what drop off and pick up will look like this year. You will receive an email ahead of your camp session with instructions specific to your camper.

Camper drop off times will be staggered based on campsite assignment. To make your drop off as smooth as possible, it is imperative that all online forms and final payment are submitted by the Wednesday prior to your camp session. Upon arrival temperature checks will be conducted and if our staff has not received your campers negative COVID-19 PCR test result via email we will ask for it at this time. Other items to have handy at drop off are your child’s masks, medications and Change for Chanco box.

The canteen will unfortunately not be open at drop off but your camper will have plenty of time to visit throughout their session. It will also be open for last minute gift and souvenir purchases on pick up day.

We are also extremely pleased to announce the return of our in-person closing ceremony. You and your camper will be invited to attend the approximately 60 minute ceremony at the end of camp.

Matoaka Covenant Save the Date

Walk with the Diocese of Southern Virginia's Repairers of the Breach on
October 29, 2022 as we explore our past and our future as allies with our Native neighbors and bind ourselves in this new covenant as we strive for equality and justice; work together to find new solutions to racial inequality; expand the spiritual dialogue between our different traditions; and stand together to honor, protect, and nurture God’s Creation. This event, including lunch, is free to attend. More details to come for overnight accommodations.

2022 Camp Dates
COVID Cancellation Policy
If a group or individual camp or retreat registration needs to cancel because of the COVID-19 virus based on health department recommendations, government regulations, or the decision of Chanco leadership, or if an individual is unable to attend because of the COVID-19 virus, any registration payments, including the full, non-refundable/non-transferable deposit will be refunded, credited toward a future program, or may be donated to Chanco as a gift in support oof our mission, based on the individual’s preference. If a group or individual is at Chanco attending a camp or retreat program and must leave early due to COVID or other illness, there is no refund provided.
