This month I am passing on information, regarding our city streets, that has already been circulating. Happy to report that an elevated approach to our Citywide Pavement Rehabilitation Project, that started in 2022, is continuing this summer with completion anticipated by fall 2025. This year’s $6.5 million initiative places an emphasis on arterial and collector streets, where increased traffic volumes and frequent use by large vehicles have accelerated deterioration. To address these conditions, the project will implement a combination of grind and overlay pavement rehabilitation, as well as updated signage and striping. These improvements aim not only to restore road quality but also to enhance bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicular safety across the targeted areas.
In total, the project will rehabilitate 13 street segments and 2 alleys, including a key section of Monterey Street, from Tenth Street south to the Caltrans right-of-way at the entrance to the Gilroy Sports Park. It is important to note that this project does not include Monterey Street south of the Sports Park entrance, nor the freeway ramps at the US 101/Monterey Street interchange. The City is actively working with Caltrans to determine a repair plan for that section.
One of the challenges that we have in Gilroy is that our community overlaps, in so many places, with organizations such as Valley Water, Santa Clara County, Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), Union Pacific and Caltrans. Council is hopeful that city staff can strengthen relationships within these organizations for enhanced collaboration concerning many issues, not limited to, but including road maintenance.
The contractor responsible for the City of Gilroy summer work will provide residents and businesses near the construction areas with notices of the upcoming work two weeks and 72 hours prior to start of the work. Traffic control, including reduced lanes and detours, will be in place. In some cases, road users will not be allowed street access for a period of time to allow for the work to be properly completed. Regular working hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with possible Saturday work. These working hours may be modified to accommodate high-traffic areas and areas near schools.
The following streets are scheduled for rehabilitation as part of this project
- Cohansey Ave
- San Ysidro Ave
- Church St
- Welburn Ave (2 segments)
- Carmel St
- Miller Ave
- Uvas Park Dr
- Tenth St
- Princevalle St
- Monterey St
- Automall Pkwy (2 segments)
- Alley between Dowdy St and Hanna St from Seventh St to Eighth St
- Alley between Church St and Eigleberry St from Seventh St to Eighth St
To hear and talk more about this topic please come to Coffee-with-the-Mayor on August 9th at 9:30AM in Council Chambers. For those who can’t make it, a video of this meeting will be posted to the City of Gilroy YouTube channel soon thereafter. Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Mayor Greg Bozzo
