| | UAPB's Fall 2025 New Student Orientation Continues | | UAPB continues its New Student Orientation (NSO) sessions to welcome the Fall 2025 class! Future sessions are scheduled for August 8, 2025, in Henderson-Young Auditorium and August 20 during Welcome Week. | |
Students and parents received a plethora of information in a fun-filled and interactive environment that included an icebreaker, trivia questions, music, and prizes. Faculty and staff were on hand to share important details on financial aid, student health and wellness, academic advisors, campus safety, dining services, and much more. Participants received one-on-one assistance as they stopped by various stations and booths that were set up in the building lobby.

| | UAPB Student Awarded U.S. Department of State Scholarship for Study Abroad Program | |
Mari’Neisha Hardrick, a senior mass communications major at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship by the U.S. Department of State (DOS).
The scholarship allows undergraduate students with financial need to study abroad. Over 70 percent of the selected students are from rural areas and small towns across the U.S., according to the DOS website.

Recent UAPB Graduate Receives Prestigious
Guy Levis Grant Award

Perry L. Williams, a recent graduate and former student leader at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, has been named the 112th recipient of the prestigious Guy Levis Grant Award.
According to the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity’s website, the award, named after one of the Fraternity’s 10 founders, is bestowed upon undergraduate members who exhibit extra meritorious contributions to the Fraternity’s advancement. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Williams received the award during the Fraternity’s 87th Grand Chapter Meeting.

Semiyah Smith, a sophomore majoring in hospitality and tourism management at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), was recently elected to the National Society for Minorities in Hospitality’s National Board.
Her appointment as chair for the southern region was made after the 35th annual NSMH National Conference and Career Fair following a strenuous interview process, according to Dr. Suzzette Shaw Goldmon, associate professor and program coordinator for UAPB’s hospitality and tourism management program.

Dr. Karleah Harris, associate professor for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Department of Human Sciences, was recently given the Leader Award at the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) Conference held in Kansas City, Missouri. AAFCS is a professional organization that supports individuals working to improve the well-being of families, individuals and communities through education, research and practice in areas such as nutrition, child development, personal finance and family relations.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Center of Excellence has started a research collaboration with Infini-SEA LLC, a leading U.S.-based shrimp breeding company, according to Dr. Yathish Ramena, director of the Center. The project aims to drive innovation in the study of shrimp and other marine species by exploring bioactive compounds, alternative ingredients, genetics and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance aquaculture sustainability and productivity.

| | Dr. Rebecca Lochmann Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award | |
Dr. Rebecca Lochmann, a professor in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award in aquatic animal nutrition to Ghana for the fall 2025 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
While in Ghana, Dr. Lochmann will conduct research and teach using her experience in aquaculture nutrition and feeds development with faculty at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana.

| | Preschoolers Discover Joy of Gardening, Healthy Eating at UAPB |
Preschoolers at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Child Development Center (CDC) have been getting their hands in the dirt and reaping the benefits of growing fresh produce in raised beds. The latest project, funded by an Evans-Allen grant, is titled “Implementing Healthy Eating Habits While Combatting Obesity in Preschool Settings.”
Dr. Marilyn Bailey, interim chair of the UAPB Department of Human Sciences, said the centerpiece of the project is a demonstration garden site where preschoolers plant seeds, monitor vegetable growth and eventually harvest the fruits of their labor – everything from greens and tomatoes to blackberries and herbs such as rosemary.

Dr. Ryan Nedd has been hired as an Extension specialist at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). In this role, he will help manage the UAPB Discovery Farm Educational Center on the university’s campus. Funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s 1890 Capacity Building Grants Program, the center aims to attract undergraduate students, as well as children and youth, to careers in agriculture.
