Summer's Sweetest Treat: It’s Watermelon Season! | | |
There’s nothing quite like a cold slice of watermelon on a hot Florida day—and the apes at the Center for Great Apes couldn’t agree more! As summer temperatures climb, watermelon season is in full swing, and our residents are reveling in the juicy goodness of this refreshing fruit.
Because watermelon season hits earlier in Florida than in most other states, our apes are some of the first to enjoy the harvest. Local farms begin producing ripe, sweet melons as early as April and May, giving us a head start on one of summer’s most beloved treats.
| | Geri, one of our orangutans, has been particularly delighted with her chilled watermelon slices. She carefully savors each bite, taking her time to enjoy the sweet, hydrating treat. | | |
Orangutan Louie, on the other hand, takes a more enthusiastic approach, using both hands to hold his slice and happily slurping down every last drop of watermelon juice.
| | | | The chimpanzees are all in on the watermelon fun, too. Marco, our oldest chimpanzee, still enjoys a good snack and doesn't pass up a chance to nibble on a cool wedge of melon. And Murray, known for his playful energy, is quick to scoop up every juicy piece he can find, often making a game of it as he runs off with his prize. | | |
Watermelon isn’t just delicious, it’s also a smart seasonal addition to our apes’ enrichment and nutrition routines. Made up of over 90% water, watermelon helps keep the apes hydrated during Florida’s sweltering summer months. It’s also rich in vitamins and contains beneficial antioxidants, making it both a fun and nourishing snack.
While watermelon is always served in moderation, it’s a favorite among many of the apes, especially when it's frozen into cubes or blended into icy treats. Caregivers often get creative, offering watermelon “popsicles” or hiding chunks in puzzle feeders to encourage natural foraging behaviors.
So here’s to summer, sunshine, and sweet, juicy watermelon, one of the apes’ favorite ways to cool down and enjoy the season early, Florida-style!
