A Farming Family Newsletter

November 9, 2023

Hello Caitlin,

Welcome to our farm family newsletter. With this newsletter we hope to introduce you to all the family members who make this farm thrive, and highlight a vegetable, fruit, or product we offer. As a farming family we continue to grow and learn everyday and hope you will join us on the journey.

A Farmer, Fisherman, & Father

Jodie M. Jordan

We can't begin to introduce the many members of the family, without starting at the top. Jodie Jordan moved to Alewives Brook Farm when he was 7 years old and hasn't stopped working since he arrived. Born with a green thumb and a mathematical brain it wasn't hard for Jodie to find his calling in farming. But farming alone was't enough to quell his passion for hard working weather dependent jobs, he bought himself a lobster boat and hit the seas.

Jodie worked along side the true patriarch of the farm, his father Alvin, until his passing in 2008.

Jodie met the love of his life, Patricia and the they had four children. Jodie now enjoys working along side all four of his children in different aspects of the farm.

You can find Jodie at the farmers market three days a week, or "taking a rest" in his rocking chair in the farm store.

The Farm Store remains open everyday but Christmas, we have plenty of vegetables, fresh seafood, as well as our value added products to offer throughout the cold days of winter.

Vegetable Spotlight: LEEKS

Let's talk about leeks, they belong to the allium family. Leeks often take. a back seat to the other members of the allium family, such as onions, shallots, chives and the ever so popular garlic.

Did you know?

Leeks are chalk full of goodness

  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin B6
  • Cooper
  • Iron
  • Folate
  • Vitamin C

Leeks have great health benefits for your eyes, and skin, they support cardiovascular health, lowering your blood pressure, and help with preventing anemia.

Harvesting your leeks

Leeks come ready in late summer and can be harvested as needed through fall until a frost is predicted, then it is time to harvest the remaining leeks and store them away.

Important to remember to loosen your soil before pulling your leeks so you don't damage the stalk.

Storing your Leeks:

It is best to wrap your leeks in a damp cloth and store them in a perforated plastic bag.

Raising Turkeys for Thanksgiving

We receive our turkeys from the hatchery as young as two days old, they are raised right here on the farm in Cape Elizabeth. They are given no hormones, no antibiotics, never exposed to pesticides. The turkeys enjoy a stress free life having constant access to food and water. They are raised in a humane environment where they are talked to and loved everyday.

We raise just over 200 turkeys each year, be sure to get your name on the list and order your turkey today.

ORDER  NOW

You can select the size turkey you need ranging from 10 to 30 pounds.

Keeping in mind that our turkeys enjoy free access to food and the space to move and exercise, therefore we have no control over the end weight of the birds. We do our best to get everyone the size bird they request.

Half Pig Share

Many years ago we welcomed our first pigs to the farm. We started with two, then went to three and jumped to five. Our pigs enjoy the fruits of the farm's labor, munching on tomatoes and lettuce are some of their favorite treats.

Our pig shares are for half a pig, which includes

  • Pork Chops
  • Country Ribs
  • Ground Pork
  • Breakfast Sausage
  • Rib Chops
  • Sweet Sausage
  • Roasts
  • Hams
  • Bacon

A share price is determined by the hanging weight of the pig. The price is $5.50 per pound, plus the processing fee.

Raising Pigs

We have two pig shares remaining for this fall, if your interested in filling your freezer with 70+ pounds of farm raised pork, please give us a call or email with any questions.
