Late this morning, Annie headed out in my car, which has been at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club since commissioning the boat this spring. She is headed to Cape Breton to meet friends to play golf before continuing on home. I have cherished the past couple of weeks sailing with Annie. She helps with lots of things aboard and brightens every day, sometimes with the wildflowers she picks for the cabin's tilting vase, sometimes by working artistically on a needlepoint project, or just making me smile or be more aware of the wildlife that we both enjoy. We will share other sailing adventures.
Tonight, my good friend, David Martz, flew into St. John's and is now aboard. He and I have sailed many offshore miles together over the years, sometimes on my boat, sometimes on his. He is the perfect shipmate for the passage from here, around Cape Race and on to Halifax, Nova Scotia, about 550 miles.
Also of note, if you look at the photo of David below, he brought a new heat exchanger for the engine, which we hope to get installed tomorrow. I am hopeful it will put an end to the engine coolant issues.
The final note tonight is on the weather. I am carefully tracking hurricane Franklin which is strengthening down south. If it tracks eastward north of Bermuda, it will not be a problem and may actually help our imminent offshore passage to Halifax. If it reverts to an earlier projection and tracks further north, it will be a problem. The next 36 hours should provide answers. So far, it is looking good. The latest projected track is shown in the last photo below.
