Dancing in September ๐ถ
There's no better song to kick off the September edition of our newsletter with Earth, Wind & Fire's September. Go ahead and listen - we promise it'll brighten up your day.
While summer officially ends on September 23rd, summer Fridays are over, the kids are back in school and we're back from vacay. I took an extended vacation visiting Greece & Spain (with the goal of learning Espaรฑol). Sooo...if I haven't responded to your email, lo siento! Please feel free to resend.
However, it was a much deserved vacation if I may say so myself: TIDE SPARK 2023 was a smashing success! ๐ฅ๐พ

So much so that we were featured on P&I!!! ๐คฉ Thank you, Nikki Pirrello!

It was also a pleasant surprise to have Edmond Fong of UC Regents post about TIDE SPARK on LinkedIN - his first and only post! And yes, we convinced him to be on stage believe it or not. ๐ค
Sarah Corr of CalPERS also attended TIDE SPARK. Many people have asked us what our secret was because there were LP's in attendance along with Sarah who are rarely seen at events. But a secret is a secret. Our lips are sealed. ๐
Then of course, the event wouldn't be complete without our special entertainment - LP's singing karaoke. The duet with Marcie Frost & the CalPERS team along with Scott Chan & the CalSTRS team singing "We are family..." is truly the essence of TIDE and our vibe.
Not to mention, we had our own version of the Wall Street Mechanical Bull at the event. Fritzy aka Emily Fritz made us forget that we were missing the Fearless Girl statue.
The event was made even more special when - during TIDE SPARK - it was announced that Bryan Fujita, who we featured on the Private Credit Panel, will be the new CIO of LAFPP. ๐ฅฐ Check out the P&I article.
For your viewing pleasure, here's the trailer: TIDE SPARK 2023 Trailer (also a little bit of Earth, Wind & Fire on the soundtrack)
Thank you to everyone who attended! Thank you to our sponsors! Thank you to the coolest LP's on the planet! And thank you to the TIDE Tribe! We rocked it.
Ps. If you missed out, you can sign up for TIDE SPARK 2024 now before early-bird ends. Sponsors can re-up at the 2023 rate if confirmed by September 15th. Sponsorship deck for 2024 is not yet available but due to increasing demand, prices will go up.
Pps. There's a secondary market for the TIDE branded pickleball paddles. Kenny McRay is looking for a TIDE pickleball paddle so that he can have a matching set. Please feel free to reach out: Kenneth.McRay@nuveen.com.

Balancing Bonds: The Working Mother's Dilemma
When we curate speakers for TIDE SPARK, we invite the best of best LP's. Below is an email from a Deputy CIO who couldn't attend. Unfortunately, this LP's situation is not uncommon. This isn't the first time an LP couldn't attend due to parental responsibilities.
In the fast-paced world of finance, we are often focused on markets, strategies, and investments. But today, we want to shine a light on an equally important aspect of our industry: the experience of mothers trying to balance a demanding career in finance while raising a family. It's a topic that deserves our attention and empathy.
|
|
The Juggling Act
For many mothers in the institutional investment industry, achieving work-life balance can feel like an ongoing juggling act. The long hours, high-pressure deadlines, and constant demand for staying updated in this field make it particularly challenging. Mothers often find themselves navigating between board meetings and parent-teacher conferences, client calls and soccer games.
The "Motherhood Penalty"
Despite advancements in gender equality, there's still a prevalent issue known as the "motherhood penalty" in many industries, including finance. Mothers sometimes face subtle biases or career setbacks after having children. This can manifest as fewer opportunities for promotions, less access to challenging assignments, or even unconscious biases from colleagues. Having raised a 19 year old son on my own since I was in college, I've experienced this first hand.
The Importance of Support
Support systems are crucial for working mothers in finance. Companies that offer flexible work arrangements, childcare support, and mentorship programs can significantly alleviate the challenges. Encouraging a culture of inclusion and understanding in the workplace is equally important.
The Impact on Diversity
The difficulties faced by mothers in finance can also have broader implications. It can discourage talented women from pursuing or staying in the industry, contributing to the gender gap in finance. By addressing these challenges, we can make our industry more diverse, inclusive, and ultimately, more successful.
A Call to Action
As an industry, we have a collective responsibility to make finance more inclusive and supportive for working mothers. This includes promoting equal opportunities, offering family-friendly policies, and fostering a culture that values work-life balance. Let's strive to create an environment where talent and dedication are recognized, regardless of gender or parental status.
TIDE would like to express our gratitude to all the mothers in our industry. Your dedication, perseverance, and contributions are invaluable. Together, let's work towards a future where being a mother in finance is not a challenge but a celebration of strength and capability.

Wall Street Firms for Girls
|
Wall Street Firms for Girls is an informational podcast for college and high school girls, where women financial professionals offer advice on how to succeed in their field and are interviewed on their experiences and the inner workings of their position.
Sophia Manzo, a rising high school senior, started Wall Street Firms for Girls as a tool to help increase financial literacy in her community and inspire other young women to pursue a career in finance. More so, motivated by her Student CEO position in her school's program for girls in finance, Sophia interviews mentors to help educate her listeners on the many paths and opportunities within a career in business. With her podcast, she hopes to inspire a more inclusive and diverse financial future.
If you are interested in being interviewed, please fill out the following Google Form or email wallstreetfirmsforgirls@gmail.com for further information. You may also click on this link to book a time on Sophia's calendar:
