News and Events

Dear People of Bethlehem,
We are journeying now in the space between Ash Wednesday and Easter. It is the holy walk between our fragile humanity and the promise of resurrection’s dawn. Can you feel it in your own Lenten journey? It is what the Celtic Christians would call a thin place. A place where the veil between this world and the eternal world is so thin, as to be able to stand in both places at the same time. There are places all over the world, like St. Peter’s Basilica and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, that are considered thin places. Many are in Ireland and England, but it is less a place than a feeling. A thin place can be anywhere. It is the place where God is near.
There was a thin place in my life years ago and I had the privilege of returning to it again and again. When I was a young pastor and my children were young, I served on the board of directors for a small Lutheran college in Issaquah, WA. The college was housed in a former Convent with a chapel filled with breathtaking strained glass windows.
| | |
As members of the board, we flew in three times a year and were housed in what had been the nuns cells. Each room was very small, with space for a twin bed, a small desk, a sink and a small closet. A single window looked out on the pine forest. The first time I rolled my suitcase into the room and closed the door, I felt an overwhelming peace descend upon me. It was as if I was completely alone, while at the same time joined by the Holy Sprit as she sat near me on the bed. Time and space were suspended. I felt as if I was both small, in the grandeur of God, and infinitely valued at the same time. I did not want to leave the room, for fear I would lose the moment of grace. And yet, each time I returned to the room, the peace enveloped me. God was palpably there. I came back to Issaquah many times for those meetings and each time, the feeling was the same. God had drawn near.
Perhaps you have known such a thin place: holding your child for the first time, a sunrise over a mountain lake, sitting at the deathbed of one you love, or the sunset over the ocean. It is the moment when all else stops, when all else falls away, and you are left alone in the company of God. The space between heaven and earth collapses, until nothing but you and God remain.
| |
|
Lent is such a time. The cross of Ash Wednesday can still be felt on our foreheads, while our frail humanity seems ever before us. This is an achingly honest place. We cannot hide, not even from ourselves. But that is not all that is true for us. Before us lies the waiting of the Easter Vigil so that, like Mary, we might find ourselves at a tomb in the early dawn, waiting for a miracle — and we will not be disappointed. Jesus will join us, and peace will envelope us, and joy will be the deepest feeling in the thin place. May you find your thin place in the coming weeks. May God find you and sit comfortably at your side. May the Spirit draw so near you can feel her wings at the edges of the room.
May the peace of the Lord, be with you always.
Blessed Easter,
Pastor Laura

Lutheran Office of Public Policy California March 5 Voter Guide and Ballot Propposition 1 Discussion — LOPPCA hosted a discussion about Ballot Proposition 1 on the March 5th Primary. A recording of that discussion is available on YouTube here and LOPPCA’s official position on the propposition is also available as a PDF at https://lutheranpublicpolicyca.org/march-5-voter-guide. As LOPPCA Director Regina Banks mentions, “rational minds may differ,” and the church is not telling you how to vote, but the purpose of LOPPCA is to provide a faith-based perspective on initiatives that intersect with the the ELCA’s Social Statements and Social Messages so you can use that information as you discern how to fill out your ballot.

After School Tutoring Program at Bethlehem | | |
|
Bethlehem is excited to partner with E4E (Encinitas for Equality) to host their Education Support Program. This after-school tutoring program is meeting at BLC three times per week in the Multi-Use room to provide tutoring services to students from our local community in 2nd - 8th grades. The students have access to the Community Library and are checking out books during the week. We recently received a $1,000 grant from the Pacifica Synod to help support this partnership and to provide needed materials to the students and tutors. The grant will also be used to update the Library as needed.
How can you help? E4E is looking for volunteers to help support this vital program in the following areas:
- Tutors - 1.5 to 3 hours per week. (High School -Adult). All tutors attend training and orientation prior to starting with students,
- Daily Facilitator - 3 to 5 hours per week to be present on campus one day per week to oversee the program. (Can be shared between two people).
- Co-Director - 10 to 20 hours per month to oversee the logistics of the program. (This is a stipend position)
If you are interested in finding out more about these volunteer opportunities, please contact Jana Hegg at childrensministry@blcenc.org.

We are in the process of creating a new outdoor columbarium space. We are working on finalizing the design, contracting with a company to build both the niches and the supporting frame, and local artist Jane Wheeler has already created an incredible tri-panel mosaic art installation for above the columbarium.
The price per niche is $2500. Each niche has space for up to two urns. You do not need to be a member to purchase one - all are welcome here at Bethlehem. Please sign up by contacting the church office, and payments can be made via check, or online here.
If you have any questions, or would like to inquire about payment plans, please contact the church office. If you would like to simply donate to this project, but do not wish to purchase a niche, your generosity and stewardship would be so appreciated, and you can do that by clicking here.
As Christians, we know that we are connected with all who have come before us in the faith – a great cloud of witnesses. Through this columbarium space we bear witness to that fact and will provide a much needed place of final rest for members of our community.
