Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HBCSD Community,

As the holiday season approaches, many families may be considering buying electric bikes (e-bikes) or electric scooters (e-scooters) for their children. We want to share important safety information to help you make informed decisions.

E-Bike Classifications to Know

According to the Beach Cities Health District (BCHD):

  • Class 1 e-bikes – Pedal-assist only; motor assists up to 20 mph.
  • Class 2 e-bikes – Pedal-assist or throttle; motor assists up to 20 mph.
  • Class 3 e-bikes – Pedal-assist only; motor assists up to 28 mph. Riders must be 16+ and helmets are required for all ages.

For more details, visit the BCHD’s Electric Bikes webpage.

E-Scooter Law Reminder

California law (CVC §21235) now makes it unlawful for children under age 16 to operate an e-scooter on public roads or bike lanes.

Learn more about the California Vehicle Code regarding the Operation of Motorized Scooters.

For Families Who Already Have E-Bikes

We also ask parents of students who currently ride e-bikes to take time for a holiday safety check. Please inspect:

  • Tire wear
  • Brake function
  • Overall bike condition

If you’re unsure how to perform these checks, visit our district’s E-Bike Safety Tips webpage for guidance.

If you notice that your child’s rear tire is significantly more worn than the front, this is often a sign of popping wheelies, which is unsafe and can lead to loss of control or injury.

A Safe and Informed Holiday Season

Whether you are considering purchasing an e-bike or e-scooter, or your child already rides one, we encourage all families to review these safety guidelines, have conversations about responsible riding, and ensure equipment is in good working condition.

Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

I hope your Thanksgiving was filled with everything that makes your heart smile. As we enter this joyful season, I’m grateful for our incredible students, supportive families, and dedicated staff who make Hermosa Valley such a special place.

Speaking of special, we had an amazing rollout of our Hermosa Valley Science Fair! See the photos below my message. We are so proud of all the students who chose to participate and showcase their curiosity, problem-solving abilities, and scientific thinking. Winners will be honored at the next Flag Ceremony on Wednesday, December 17. A big shoutout to Mr. Underwood, our 6th Grade Science teacher, for delivering on this big project from start to finish.

Our 5th graders wrapped up an incredible “Walk Through American Revolution” before break. They worked hard to bring key historical figures to life, reenact important battles, and dig deeper into the causes and events that shaped this pivotal time in our nation’s history. Their effort, energy, and teamwork truly shone. A huge thank-you to our 5th grade teachers for all the preparation and dedication that made this experience so engaging and memorable for our students.
