Jesse Boyd Elementary Celebrates 60 Years &

a Bright Future Ahead!

Last Friday, halls of Jesse Boyd Elementary were filled with laughter, memories, and a deep sense of pride as students, staff, alumni, and community members gathered to celebrate 60 years of excellence. This milestone event, themed "Come Home to JBE," was a special time to reflect on the school’s rich history, honor those who have shaped it, and look ahead to an exciting new chapter with the construction of a brand-new school starting soon.

The morning kicked off with a school-wide assembly, where students, teachers, and special guests — including former faculty and alumni — came together to celebrate six decades of Bulldog spirit. Principal Jonathan Duvall addressed the crowd, acknowledging the profound impact of JBE over the years and the incredible community support that made the upcoming school rebuild possible. "Jesse Boyd has always been more than just a school—it’s a family. Today, we honor our past while looking ahead to a future that will give generations of students even greater opportunities to learn and grow," said Duvall.

One of the most touching moments came when former students and teachers surprised the crowd with heartfelt messages, reminiscing about their time at JBE and sharing words of encouragement for today’s students. Their reflections were a reminder that JBE’s legacy lives on in the thousands of lives it has touched.

JBE alumni Trey Gowdy, former U.S. Representative and America television personality; and Lydia Blackstone, weekend anchor for WJCL News in Savannah; celebrated JBE’s 60 years of success by sharing video messages (above), reminiscing about their time at JBE and offering words of encouragement to today’s students.

Following the assembly, students brought history to life with a "Parade of the Decades," dressing in styles and accompanied by music from the 1960s through today. The celebration continued with a reception hosted by the PTO, where guests shared stories, flipped through old yearbooks, and envisioned the bright future ahead.

This anniversary celebration was especially meaningful, as JBE prepares for an exciting transformation. On August 20, 2024, the Spartanburg community approved the construction of a new JBE and a new addition at Mary H. Wright Elementary, which will house childcare for District 7 teachers and staff and an expanded need-based public 3K program.

As the celebration wrapped up, one thing was clear — the heart of Jesse Boyd Elementary isn’t in the bricks and walls, but in the people who have made it a special place for 60 years. This milestone was a testament to the strength of the JBE family — past, present, and future — and the unwavering commitment to education that defines District 7.

Here’s to the next 60 years of learning, leading, and Bulldog pride!

Team7 Gives Back: A Grand Slam for United Way!

D7 faculty and staff stepped up to the plate in a big way for our annual United Way campaign, showing once again that when our community comes together, incredible things happen!

As Team7, we are honored to support United Way’s Community Impact Agenda, which works to remove barriers that stand in the way of our students thriving —tackling poverty, self-sufficiency, education, and employment head-on. These are challenges no family should face alone, and thanks to the generosity and heart of our faculty and staff, we raised nearly $40,000 to help lift up the students and families we cherish so much. WOW!

A huge shout-out to the Spartanburgers, who helped us knock it out of the park by donating game tickets to lucky D7 donors! Each of our schools had a winner who will get to enjoy a game with their families. The Spartanburgers' generosity energized our campaign, and we are beyond grateful for their community spirit and support!

The Spartanburgers are gearing up to bring Minor League Baseball back to our city as a Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, they’ll be playing at the brand-new Fifth Third Park in downtown Spartanburg. Want to be part of the action? Check out the inaugural season schedule and grab your tickets here.

Thank you, Team7, for your generosity, teamwork, and heart. Together, we are making a difference!

Phones OFF, Learning ON: Thank You for Your Support!

Parents, thank you for your support in helping students follow D7’s new cell phone policy, which aligns with South Carolina’s statewide requirement for all school districts.

A Quick Reminder:

✅ All personal electronic devices (cell phones, Smartwatches, AirPods, headphones, etc.) must remain powered off and out of sight from the tardy bell until dismissal

✅ This includes any device that connects to the Internet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular signals that can be used for digital communication

✅ The goal is to create a focused, distraction-free learning environment

Need a refresher? The full District 7 Board Policy is available here.

We Appreciate You!

Your support makes a difference! By working together, we’re ensuring students stay engaged, focused, and ready to learn every day. Thank you for partnering with us to make "Phones OFF, Learning ON" a success.

D7 Students Engaged in City of Spartanburg's MLK Celebration

"Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?"

– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In the spirit of this powerful message, we proudly celebrate Tradd Hodge, an eighth grader at McCracken Middle School, who was honored with the Youth Humanitarian Award at the City of Spartanburg’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration! For the second year in a row, a D7 student has received this prestigious recognition—awarded to a young leader with a passion for service, a heart for giving, and a commitment to making our community better for all.

Tradd’s journey began with a heartfelt idea—one that would change lives. At just five years old, he told his mother he wanted to create his own holiday, Tradd’s Giving Day. But instead of receiving gifts, he wanted to give them to children who needed a reason to smile.

What started as a simple act of kindness quickly grew. Tradd, alongside his mother and little sister, began collecting toys, books, and donations, delivering them to children’s hospitals in South Carolina. The joy on each child’s face as they picked a special surprise gave Tradd a new purpose—one that would shape his future.

Now, seven years later, that small idea has blossomed into The Giving Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by The Spartanburg County Foundation. Tradd leads board meetings, organizes donation drives, and inspires young volunteers to embrace the power of giving.

His mother, Anna, recalls that in all these years, Tradd has never once asked to keep a single toy for himself. His heart was made for giving—even at age five.

While we are thrilled to celebrate Tradd’s well-deserved recognition, we also want to honor all the students across our district—both sung and unsung—who are making a difference every day. Whether through acts of kindness, leadership, service, or quiet moments of compassion, our students embody the values of empathy, resilience, and a commitment to others.

At D7, we believe in fostering students who not only achieve academically but also lead with kindness, service, and purpose. Tradd’s story is a shining example of the impact young people can make when they choose to lift others up. The future is bright because of students like him—and so many more across our district!

In addition to this incredible recognition, our Viking Early College (VEC) scholars played an essential role in supporting the city’s MLK Jr. Community Celebration. Alex Tufino had the honor of escorting keynote speaker and civil rights icon Ruby Bridges, who was presented with a key to the City of Spartanburg during the event. This moment underscored the significance of honoring trailblazers who paved the way for civil rights and equality.

Meanwhile, our VEC scholars stepped up to welcome attendees as greeters, assist event organizers behind the scenes, and ensure the program ran smoothly—demonstrating a commitment to service that aligns with Dr. King's vision of community engagement and unity. Their actions reflected maturity, leadership, and a desire to make a positive impact, inspiring all who attended the celebration.

Viking Early College senior Alan Sanchez was one of the MLK Essay contest winners sponsored by the City. He was recognized and awarded a scholarship during the City's annual Mayor's Breakfast. "Addressing educational inequality in Spartanburg is about more than improving test scores; it's about creating a community where everyone, regardless of native language or cultural background, has the opportunity to reach their full potential," he said in his award-winning essay. Alan highlighted the urgency of addressing educational equity in Spartanburg to achieve Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of a beloved community. Drawing from his experience as a first-generation college student and active community leader, Alan emphasized the importance of cultural inclusion, language access, and mentorship programs to ensure all students, regardless of background, can thrive and contribute to the community's prosperity.

Viking Early College scholars also engaged in a discussion of Dr. King's powerful 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail (pictured above). Guided by esteemed leaders—SAM CEO Dr. Russell Booker, former Spartanburg Mayor and education philanthropist Bill Barnet, Spartanburg School District 7 Superintendent Jeff Stevens, and constitutional scholar, attorney, and former general counsel for the Obama administration John Simpkins —our students explored the enduring impact of Dr. King’s message. SC Education Oversight Committee Director Dana Yow and Dr. Ann Byrd, director of SC TEACHER, also joined the discussion.

Throughout the session, students impressed these distinguished guests with their insightful reflections, drawing meaningful parallels and addressing complex, modern-day challenges. Their thoughtful engagement highlights the continued relevance of Dr. King's vision and their dedication to making a positive difference in the world.

SHS Joins Billion Dollar Industry with New Esports Program

From the idea of a team three years ago, to the first interest meeting, then practice, and now its first tournament season, Spartanburg High School is excited to be the home of its very own Esports Team, The Viking Vanguard. Esports has exploded as a global industry with an estimated audience of one billion people in 2025. If the sport continues growing at its current rate, its market value is projected to exceed $3 billion this year and grow to $7 billion by the end of this decade.

The Esports industry provides vast career and scholarship opportunities for high school students. Several colleges have created Esports programs in recent years, including both Converse University and Coker College locally. These programs develop skills like communication, critical thinking, teamwork, strategic thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and leadership by requiring players to collaborate effectively, make quick decisions under pressure, and strategize with their team to achieve victory – all of which are transferable to other work environments.

“Our SHS program aims to establish a competitive Esports team, promote career readiness, and build a community for students through a positive gaming environment that fosters academic success, leadership qualities, teamwork, and sportsmanship,” said co-coaches and SHS faculty members Endra Biggerstaff and Elizabeth Hinton. The program is a collaborative effort with support from district personnel, IT personnel, administrators, the D7 community, coaches, and most importantly, students.

“From a coach’s perspective, we want this to be a student-driven program, and the next step in building their success. Each member of this team was carefully selected and brings a new perspective that will make the Vanguard a staple in this community.”

By harnessing an existing student interest and channeling it into an avenue for building community and student success, all involved with the program exude an enthusiasm that is magnetic.

“We are gamers. We are competitors. We are the Viking Vanguard!”

Esports Arenas like this one above, with seating for thousands of spectators, are thriving hubs of competitive action. Hosting both professional and amateur events, these packed arenas reflect the growing global impact of esports, where students and players alike can experience the excitement and scale of the industry firsthand.

McCracken’s Miles Little Wins Regional Spelling Bee, Heads to Nationals

In a shining moment for Spartanburg District 7, McCracken Middle School eighth-grader Miles Little claimed victory at the 2025 USC Upstate Regional Spelling Bee. Miles confidently spelled the championship word "alluvial" to secure his spot at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. this May.

"It immediately clicked when I heard the word," said Miles, who balances academics with playing piano and competing on Spartanburg High’s varsity swim team. He attributes his success to studying word patterns, including a technique called the "rabbit rule," and plans to intensify his preparation for nationals.

Miles’ win exemplifies how District 7 prepares students for greatness by fostering excellence, ambition, and a drive to succeed. We are incredibly proud of Miles and can’t wait to cheer him on as he represents our district on the national stage!

We are also immensely proud of all our students who represented our school communities with distinction at the Regional Spelling Bee:

  • Rudra Patel, Drayton Mills
  • Aaron Patton, Mary H. Wright
  • Ada Jo Curle, Pine Street
  • Cecilia Drake, Jesse Boyd
  • Brantley Miller, E.P. Todd
  • Zaryah Mendy, Carver Middle

Congratulations to these outstanding spellers who demonstrated dedication, hard work, and intelligence in their performances!

District 7 Board of Trustees Honored During Board Appreciation Month

In January, we proudly celebrated our Board of Trustees during Board Appreciation Month. This year’s theme from the South Carolina School Boards Association is “All In”—a reflection of how our Board, faculty, staff, students, and families go "All In" every day in District 7. This recognition serves both as an acknowledgment of the Board’s hard work and a reminder of their continued responsibility to those they represent.

We extend our deep appreciation to District 7's Trustees:

(Pictured above from left to right) Clay Mahaffey (Board Chair), James Jones, Jeff Mason, Hallie Hurst, Sharon Porter, Griffin Lynch (Board Secretary), Meg Clayton, Rick Gray (Board Vice Chair), and Vernon Beatty

At the January board meeting, Clay Mahaffey and Meg Clayton received special recognition from the South Carolina School Boards Association for 10 years of service. And since we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, we brought a lot of heart to February’s board meeting by sharing "love notes" for each Trustee! At their seats were stacks of cards, notes, and artwork made especially for them by students at EP Todd Elementary. A few examples of these thoughtful creations are pictured below — they’re absolutely delightful! The cards left everyone with smiles and gratitude. Here is a sweet sampling of the messages from our students:

From Bella: I really appreciate everything you do to make our school a great place to learn. I know you spend a lot of time making big decisions for our school and I want to say thank you for doing that.

From Nadia: Thank you for making sure kids can learn and for kids to be kind. Learning is a good thing for kids. Thank you for listening to parents, teachers and students and thank you for making sure the school is doing well.

From Aiyanna: You are awesome and I appreciate you! We will make sure our school is clean for you. We will try to be the best students.

From Serenity: Thank you for keeping our school safe. You do a lot of hard work. This school is perfect the way you have it. Your rules are perfect. Everyone should follow them. Some people don’t follow them, but they are really good.

From Bailey: I am a 5th grade student at EP Todd Elementary School. I have been here for 6 years and now just found out about you! I feel like more people should know about you and all your hard work. I find it inspiring that you have been working with D7 for 26 years. Thank you for all your hard work these past 26 years! (that one was to Rick Gray)

And last, from Emily: Hi, I know you don’t know me – I’m Emily. Nice to meet you. Thank you for everything, like when we have days off and what we learn. We couldn’t have this school without you. This may be a hard job. I really don’t know, but if it is – you can do it, don’t give up! You can do anything. We all love you.

Their dynamic routines and school spirit not only showcased their dedication but also highlighted the vibrant community support that defines Pine Street Elementary.

Carver Middle School's Chorus Scholars recently showcased their exceptional talent at the Spartanburg Sings event, sponsored by the Rotary Club held in our very own D7 Fine Arts Center. This annual gathering unites over 180 students from 11 middle schools across Spartanburg County into a single, harmonious choir. While many District 7 schools participated, we are highlighting Carver's outstanding performance, as captured in the accompanying photos.

Under the expert guidance of our D7 choral staff, the students dedicated significant time to rehearsals, culminating in a performance that highlighted their passion for music. Our music educators' commitment to nurturing student talents and providing them with platforms to shine is truly commendable.

We are incredibly proud of all our D7 students for their contribution to the county's musical community.

February 14 and March 14 are eLearning Days

February 14 and March 14 will now be eLearning days for students, serving as make-up days for some of the six school days missed last fall during Hurricane Helene. Legislators are still discussing whether to grant school boards flexibility to waive additional days. The third make-up day is yet to be determined and will be communicated as soon as a decision is reached.

District leaders understand that adjusting the calendar may impact family plans. Students will have two school days after each make-up day to complete and submit their eLearning assignments. If you need childcare, the City of Spartanburg is offering two day camps for students – one for ages 5-12 at CC Woodson Community Center from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and one for ages 13-17 at the Dr. TK Gregg Center from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Snacks will be served and there is NO COST to participate, but advance registration is required.
