Five of the Top Stories at Five Counties this month!

Fundraiser results in thousands of reasons to smile

Smile Cookie campaign

There's plenty to smile about following this year's Smile Cookie Campaign. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, a record-breaking $138,711.96 was raised by 18 Tim Hortons locations in Peterborough, Bridgenorth, Lakefield and Curve Lake.

The funds will be equally split – $68,355.98 apiece – between Five Counties Children’s Centre and the Peterborough Humane Society, the two local charities benefitting from the Smile Cookie campaign. At Five Counties, the funds will help more children access vital treatment services.

“Our community truly came together to make this all possible,” says Scott Pepin, CEO of Five Counties. “We are grateful to everyone who volunteered their time, helped spread the word, purchased Smile Cookies, and supported this initiative. We are also very appreciative of Tim Hortons and its staff, who warmly welcomed our volunteers."

Infant Hearing Program

Listen up: why hearing screening for newborns is sound advice

Ontario’s Infant Hearing Program is a no-cost service for newborns and their families that is invaluable in providing piece of mind.

The Infant Hearing Program is a simple, but important screening that checks a newborn’s hearing. The screening process itself is quick, safe, and painless, and is ideally done when a baby is sleeping. While detecting hearing loss is rare in newborns, if there is an issue, the program can refer families for additional screening and supports to help their child.

New 'Abilities in Action' Program is here to help children

The new Abilities in Action (Client-Funded) Program (AAP) is here! Provided by Five Counties Children's Centre, AAP is a new way for families to access individualized therapy for their child, including autism-related services. Abilities in Action offers:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech-Language Therapy
  • Assessments and treatment packages tailored to meet your child's unique goals.

AAP is designed to help children and their families grow, connect and thrive. Families can use government funding (like the Ontario Autism Program), workplace benefits and other funding sources to use the program. Click on the link to learn more about what's available.
