Tips on Getting the Most out of Your Fresh Tomatoes
Vendors at the Mississippi Farmers Market provide an array of field-grown and greenhouse tomatoes in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Feel free to stop by their booths and ask questions about their tomatoes. You are bound to see one that stands out!

Meanwhile, here's a list of tips to get the most out of your fresh tomatoes while shopping at the Mississippi Farmers Market this Saturday:

  • Search for tomatoes with consistent coloring (with the exception of specialty tomatoes with obvious color streaks).
  • Pick it up; it should be heavy for its size (with the exception of cherry and grape tomatoes).
  • Refrigerating your tomatoes may affect their flavor and texture if they are already ripe.
  • Search for tomatoes that have a sweet smell at the stem; this is a sign that they are ripe.
  • Tomatoes are versatile. They can be eaten in salads, in tacos, on sandwiches, on pizzas, in gravies, in soups, in succotash, and in pastas. This list goes on and on, of course!
  • Crank it up a notch, and grill or bake your tomatoes with boneless chicken breasts. Season to your taste!
  • Store your tomatoes in a shaded area of the kitchen to avoid rotting.
