Have you noticed a small change this year in your child's schedule? I am excited to share that this school year, we have introduced a new schedule designed to better support both the academic and social-emotional growth of our students. All students now participate in an Advisory period at the start of the day and an Independent Practice (IP) period at the end of the day.

Every day, students begin and end their day with the same small group of peers and dedicated staff. Teachers were thoughtfully matched with students to ensure that every child has a supportive adult who knows them well and is actively building a positive relationship with them. Morning Advisory focuses on developing executive functioning skills such as time management, organization, and goal setting. Students practice using agendas or planners—whether digital or paper—to map out their week and stay organized. On Tuesdays, classes take time to review their planners together, double-check assignments in Schoology, and confirm they are ready for the week ahead. Advisory also includes community-building activities, stress management strategies, and games to encourage connection and fun. Each Friday, our school counseling team leads students through lessons centered on social-emotional learning.

At the end of each day, students gather for IP (Independent Practice), a dedicated time to complete assignments, monitor progress, and check off completed work. This period also emphasizes goal setting, both short-term and long-term. For some students, these goals connect closely with individualized learning plans or IEP goals, ensuring targeted support.

We are proud of the way this new schedule creates space for both academic success and personal growth. It is our hope that these daily touch points help students feel more connected, capable, and confident as they navigate their school journey.

Light the Way for Winston Students - San Diego Gives! ❤️

We’re excited to share that The Winston School is part of San Diego Gives — a countywide day of giving on Tuesday, September 9 that brings together nonprofits and community members to keep 100% of donations right here in San Diego.

As part of Winston’s Annual Fund: Light the Way, this is a wonderful opportunity to rally our community in support of our students.

Here’s how you can help us in San Diego Gives:

  • Donate now at www.thewinstonschool.org/donate-now/

  • Share our campaign with friends, family, and networks

  • Tell your story — why you support Winston — and inspire others to join you

Your support ensures that Winston can continue to provide an education that celebrates strengths, nurtures passions, and empowers students with learning differences to succeed in school and beyond.

San Diego Gives is more than a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of generosity, community, and the belief that together we can make a difference.

In Biology class, students explored independent and dependent variables through a fun, hands-on experiment. Using soda and Mentos, they tested how changing one factor could affect the outcome, bringing the scientific method to life in an engaging and memorable way.

We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley, founder of the Dyslexia Training Institute, national speaker, advocate, and author of several books on dyslexia and literacy to our school for an interactive staff experience. All staff participated in the training, experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by students with dyslexia and modeling strategies to teach with greater empathy, understanding, and effectiveness.
