Parent Child Dedication

Last weekend we had six families dedicate ten children to the Lord! This past Sunday, as a congregation, we agreed to support and uplift these families as they seek to raise their children in Christ-centered homes. Here are the things we committed to together:

  • Loving these children as part of our DCC family
  • Encouraging them and praying for these families
  • Modeling a life of love for God and others

Let's continue to pray for these families and support our Children's Ministry. You can jump in on Sunday opportunities or help out over Halloween weekend at Trunk or Treat. If you are interested in learning more about serving with DCC Kids, Kristina would love to connect with you!

THIS WEEK'S INVITATION

Fresh ideas for spiritual growth

This Week’s Invitation comes to you from our Door Creek on Mission Director, Tammy Wood!

If you're looking for a book that will stretch your faith and expand your understanding of God's mission, I'd highly recommend The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns. This book challenged me to think more deeply about what it means to live out the Gospel, not only through what we believe, but through how we love and serve others. Through powerful stories from around the world and honest reflections from his own journey, Stearns paints a compelling picture of God's heart for those who are vulnerable, hurting and overlooked.

Rather than making readers feel guilty, the book invites us to consider how God may be calling each of us to use our unique gifts, resources and influence to make a difference. It offers a fresh perspective on the connection between faith and action and reminds us that sharing the love of Jesus often involves both our words and our deeds. Whether you're passionate about missions, justice, serving your neighbors or simply wanting to grow in your faith, this book will challenge, inspire and encourage you to see God's work in a new way.

The Big Idea

(What is the author's point?)

Jesus is the center of God's plan. What you do with who He has revealed Himself to be is the most important decision of your life.

Why It Matters

(Why is this relevant to us?)

God’s heart is to rescue and restore. So why do we so often feel like He is absent from our pain and struggles? Why does there seem to be a gap between God’s promises of rescue, saving and restoration, and our human experiences of feeling distant from Him? This passage is a reminder that often, God shows up in our lives in unexpected ways and we simply do not recognize it. He shows up in ways beyond our hopes, dreams or imagination.

Good to Know

(What are some helpful insights into this passage?)

Verse 28-30: Here we see Jesus dictating the events of history to lead to His own death. We have His recorded words, “No one takes my life from me, I lay it down on my accord” (John 10:18). Jesus knows exactly what this regal entrance into Jerusalem was leading to.

Verse 31: It would not have been uncommon for a person of dignity and repute to request personal property for their own use. This was a semi-common thing for Rabbis to do, so while it feels odd to us, the disciples and the owner of the donkey would not have been caught off guard by this.

Verses 35-36: This feels like a red-carpet entrance. The image of Jesus proceeding into the city is both a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 and replication of Solomon's procession to Gihon in 1 Kings 1. The difference, however, is that Jesus’s entrance is not a display of earthly power, but one of gentleness and humility.

Verses 38-39: The declaration of Jesus as King was a threat to Rome and blasphemy to the Pharisees. The unwillingness to receive Jesus as King is a reflection of their hearts and sealing of their fate.

Verse 41: This is such an important verse. Jesus, about to go to the cross for the very people who will reject Him, weeps over them. Could He not have just saved them? When we grapple with massive questions like "why does God allow evil?" and "why does God not stop this or that," I think this verse can give us deep insight into the way in which God has chosen to bring rescue to this world. God has provided a means to be restored to wholeness, but He will never manipulate or force anyone to accept it. This means that people will reject God's provision and evil will wreak havoc and the consequences will be felt. Jesus 'sees' the city and is moved with compassion, knowing that many will reject His offer of reconciliation. This both reveals His heart for us while also reminding us of the responsibility we each carry to choose Jesus.

Verses 42-44: The urgency of these verses must be felt. Jesus follows the pattern of prophets of old declaring judgment for the unfaithfulness of Israel and ends with this chilling indictment—"because you did not recognize the time when God visited you."
