Pentecost Sunday June 8

Come and feel the wind of God’s Spirit among us as we celebrate the birthday of the church on Pentecost Sunday, June 8. You are invited to wear something red, as we remember the “tongues of fire” that marked the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ followers in Acts 2.

A highlight of the worship service will be the baptism of Allanna Christine Kinsey, daughter of Cara and Tim Kinsey. Stew Bridgman Sr., Cara’s grandfather and Allanna’s great-grandfather, will be conducting the baptism. Stew and his late wife, Larry Ann, baptized Cara in the CHPC sanctuary when she was a baby.

Our congregation is blessed to share this special occasion with the Bridgman family as we celebrate Pentecost together. All are invited to stay for cake after the service.

Give to the Pentecost Offering

Your contribution to the Pentecost Offering, one of the special offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), supports ministries with children at risk, youth, and young adults. This offering helps fund the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, the Young Adult Volunteer program, and other projects. A portion of the offering receipts go to a ministry of the congregation's choice.

To donate to the Pentecost Offering (in addition to your regular CHPC offering), write "Pentecost Offering" on the memo line of a separate check or place money in a Pentecost Offering envelope. Place your check or envelope in the offering plate. Or donate via the CHPC website, clicking on Pentecost Offering as the recipient. Thank you for giving generously!

Highlights of the May 28, 2025, Session Meeting

The Session met with Aaron Davidson, who has asked to transfer his membership to Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church. After a conversation with Aaron about his life and faith journey, the Session joyfully agreed to receive him as a member. He and Katherine Futrell, who is transferring back to CHPC after living in Florida for a few years, will be welcomed into membership during worship one Sunday soon.

Among other actions, the Session:

  • Confirmed an email vote to approve a policy on how CHPC will respond to situations involving immigration enforcement actions on church property (ICE raids, deportation concerns, etc.). To read the new Immigration Enforcement Response Policy, click here. [link to policy]
  • Approved a recommendation from the Scholarship Committee to award scholarships of $2,000 each to 4 students: Eli Bartlett Turner (sophomore, University of Edinburgh, majoring in linguistics), Caroline Hartmans (junior, University of Louisville, majoring in fine arts), Ross Hartmans (senior, University of Louisville, majoring in history), and Alek Kissel (junior, University of Louisville, majoring in political science). Expressed gratitude to Patti Marcum, who has headed this committee for many years, and Ben Langley, who has agreed to assist Patti and learn how to carry on this work.
  • Heard a report on projects of the Master Gardeners, including a proposed mini-orchard, and approved moving forward with a water catchment system, purchase of 4 shrubs for the Meditation Garden, and seeking quotes from arborists for removal of a diseased apple tree.
  • Approved financial reports for March and April presented by treasurer Aaron Baer.

Guns to Gardens Louisville

Safe-Disposal Opportunity, June 8, 2–4 p.m.

The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church is joining with other faith and community groups in a small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering our sixth gun safe-disposal opportunity.

The event will be on Sunday, June 8, from 2 to 4 p.m., at All Peoples Unitarian Church, 4936 Brownsboro Rd. This is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and anonymously, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or be used in violence. The event is one of many marking the observance of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, June 6.

The metal gun pieces are forged into tools and jewelry by local blacksmith Craig Kaviar. Guns to Gardens Louisville has just begun working with another local artisan, Matthew Karr of Karr Custom Furniture, to transform wood from the guns into art and household items.

If you have guns you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares” on June 8. Spread the word about this opportunity! For more information about Guns to Gardens Louisville, contact Eva Stimson or Soni Castleberry. Link to flyer

Nursery Volunteers Needed

The nursery is clean and fully stocked. Some visitors with young children have expressed interest in using the nursery. The NOW Committee would like for the nursery to be available for babies and children up to age 5 who need it. Just as Jesus welcomed the children, we want all the little ones in our midst to feel loved and welcomed in our congregation.

To make this happen, we need volunteers who are willing to staff the nursery as needed (2 adults each Sunday). If you are interested in helping in this way, please contact the church office so that you can get the necessary background check.

Also needed is a volunteer to serve as Nursery Coordinator. This person will prepare a calendar of nursery volunteers, organize volunteer training as needed, and update and keep on hand sign-in sheets and information forms for parents and nursery workers. If you are interested in taking on this important ministry, please contact the church office and/or Soni Castleberry, at soni.castleberry@gmail.com or (502) 417-6481.

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.
