Mateusz S. Wietecha, DMD, PhD Thoughts on DLS2026 w WHF

"It was such a pleasure to participate in the DLS/WHF conference and meet with many wonderful people.

As a first-time attendee to the DLS/WHF conference, I was impressed by the passion of the conference participants for the patients who battle with diabetic foot ulcers. The discussions around reframing the disease from a burden to a challenge, from an isolated to a team-based treatment approach, and referring to the patients who heal as survivors that actively participate in their recovery really inspired me. The conference has provided me with fresh perspectives, potential new collaborations, and novel avenues for research for my lab."

Dr Wietecha's research on the immunological reactions and diabetic cell dysfunction is fascinating how the body's inflammation is driven and maintained into a chronic state and thus non-healing for wounded tissues. Better understanding the cycle of perpetual chronicity enables researchers to find potential therapeutic targets to modify reactions and facilitate healing.

Congratulations to Dr. Wietecha on his research and on receiving the H. Paul Erhlich Rising Star Award.

2026 H. Paul Ehrlich Rising Star, Kanhaiya Singh, PhD, from McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh is the recipient of the Ehrlich award entitled “Epigenetic Basis of Diabetic Wound Healing Impairment."

Dr. Singh stated: “This award will allow me to facilitate the presentation and scientific discussion of my work to renowned wound healing clinicians and scientists. The main goal is to receive peer critiques about my research approach and to begin collaboration to address the epigenetic pathology of diabetic wounds. Scientific interactions with others examining critical questions related to the epigenetic basis of diabetic wound healing impairment will help me formulate novel hypotheses to be tested in my future intramural and extramural grants.“

Plan to attend Kanhaiya's Lecture during the DLS with WHF Conference April 7-10, 2027
