Applications for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) are now open.

Applications for the CERB opened on April 6. To apply for the CERB, you can begin by registering for your  Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) My Account  and familiarizing yourself with the  application process.   If you believe you are eligible for the CERB based on this information, we encourage you to apply for the CERB. As you proceed with the application, you’ll learn whether you qualify or not. Those who are still unsure can ask the Government of Canada about their personal circumstances by calling the toll-free telephone line at 1-800-959-8281.

If you have received income recently, you may still qualify for the CERB

The CERB has seven, four-week eligibility periods, spanning from March 15 to September 26, 2020. You can apply for four of the seven periods, and your applications do not need to be consecutive. For example, you can apply for eligibility periods one, three, four, and seven. You can view the eligibility periods on the  CRA’s webpage .

If you are receiving commission cheques intermittently between March and September, you may be disqualified for one of the seven CERB eligibility periods. For your initial application, you must receive no income for any stretch of 14 days. If you file for a subsequent period after having returned to work between periods, you must once again receive no income for any stretch of 14 days to be eligible. The date in which you receive any commissions is when it’s counted as income.
