Greetings,

DID YOU KNOW that today is your reminder to stay active.

According to a study from British Journal of Sports Medicine, staying consistently active throughout adulthood can cut all-cause death risk by up to 40%, especially for heart disease.

Even activity below recommended guidelines provides meaningful protection. Moving from sedentary to moderately active delivers the biggest gains.

Those who increased their activity from inactive to active saw significant benefits as well. Thus, it’s never too late to start.

Infection Support UPDATED!

Year-round infection is the new normal. We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 3.0 Protocol here.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. A recent analysis of methyl B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. A man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Know your supplier!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie Minsky

Cheese, Please

Bonnie: I was excited to read new research linking cheese consumption to a lower risk of dementia.

One fascinating long-term study looked at a sample of 27,670 Swedish people who volunteered for the Malmo Diet and Cancer study (Journal of Neurology). The volunteers gave details at the start of the study…then had their progress followed for almost 25 years. During that time, 3,208 (about 12% total) of the volunteers were diagnosed with dementia. People consuming more than 50 grams of high fat cheese (about 1/4 cup shredded/grated OR 3 Tbs. of hard/compact) daily were almost 15% less likely to develop dementia. The volunteers who ate 15 grams or less of higher fat cheeses daily had more dementia (10% dementia eating more high fat cheese vs. 13% dementia eating less high fat cheese). Low-fat cheese did not offer any protection from dementia.

Another Finnish study also showed a lower risk of dementia among people eating more cheese (European Journal of Nutrition). The authors suspected that the vitamin K2 contained in the chosen higher fat cheeses could be the protective factor. Other K2 research has found its benefits for cognitive health, including the blockage of inflammation and amyloid plaque aggregation (Molecules).

The important take-away from these research findings indicate that not all dairy products are equal when it comes to brain health and prevention of dementia. Dairy fat, it appears, is not associated with dementia. Drinking cow’s milk (especially for older adults shows many negative research studies, including lactose intolerance. Higher fat cheeses typically contain very low lactose. It is very difficult to overload on higher fat cheeses due to their incredible satiety. Excess calcium from cow’s milk, especially if skim or low-fat, is very easy to overconsume. If not digested well, the calcium finds its way into arteries and kidneys causing calcification. Excessive cow’s milk also blocks the important mineral magnesium. So, enjoy cheese, if tolerated…in moderation.

Best Higher Fat Cow Cheeses

Gouda, full fat mozzarella, mild and sharp cheddar, Gruyère, and even Brie are ideal. For people who cannot tolerate cow’s milk foods due to an allergy to the casein, there are a number of higher fat sheep and goat cheese choices below.

Best Higher Fat Sheep Cheeses

Manchego, Pecorino Romano, and creamy ricotta are ideal. A great combination of a sheep/goat blend is authentic Greek feta squares (often soaked in brine).

Best Higher Fat Goat Cheeses

Although goat’s milk cheeses contain less fat than sheep cheeses, Brie style goat and creamed Chèvre are delicious higher fat choices.

Ultimately, advancing public health requires more than merely recommending “good” foods while avoiding “bad” foods. Looking at individual needs, which has always been our goal for you, allows strategies for consuming foods we love in moderation without fear.

Case Report

From Grave to Great

A middle-age woman came to Steve for rapid weight loss, sudden change in bowel habits that caused bouts of extreme constipation and uncontrolled diarrhea, as well as chronic stomach pain. She was also experiencing extreme family-related stress. These issues were also affecting her bones adversely as she got a very unusual foot fracture. She was not getting answers from her army of specialists who simply wanted her to go on multiple GI medications. She wanted to see if she could actually fix the issues.

Steve explained that what she was eating was diametrically opposed to what her body needed, causing malabsorption and malnutrition. Moreover, her doctor prescribed a huge amount of iron which she was not absorbing and contributing to her constipation. Steve also made the connection between her stress and the inability for her GI tract to function properly.

Steve recommended an optimal eating plan for her to follow while also allowing her gastrointestinal tract to rest and repair through targeted supplementation and other lifestyle measures. They discussed sensible types of physical activity and stress management techniques that she felt comfortable with.

In a few short months, her gastrointestinal function normalized. She even took the plan a step further by eschewing caffeine! Currently, she feels great without any life limitations.

Best Ways to Prepare for Labor

A recent article in Pathways Magazine explains why communication matters more than checklists. How when people picture preparing for labor and the months that follow, they may imagine classes, relaxation, birth positions and learning through books or videos.

Pathways explains that just as important is how well partners can talk to each other. The couples who come through labor and those bleary first months feeling connected and supported aren’t the ones who knew every medical term. They’re the ones who learned how to stay flexible and curious about each other and the process.

I agree as for 37 years I have worked with pregnant women. They come in for back pain, headaches, pubic bone pain, difficulty breathing, nausea, and to stay in optimal alignment for giving birth. If their husband comes in during a chiropractic appointment I often show them a specific way that they can help their wife at home to reduce pain and help prepare the mother for labor.

I show the husband how to relax the hips and low back as his wife is laying on one side. Then I have the wife lay on the opposite side as I speak the husband through the process of what he can do. I also express to the wife how important it is for her to communicate with her husband whether he needs to be more gentle or more intense as he is working on her.

It’s heartwarming for me to hear what she will say to him, how he respects her needs and that he is doing something helpful for her. This is a great way to set the tone to stay flexible and curious about each other during the entire birth process and what’s to come afterwards.
