Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month. Every year, Black History Month is an occasion to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and history of Black Americans who have had such an amazing influence in shaping our Nation’s history. Their achievements have monumentally advanced equality efforts in our country and continue to serve as an inspiration for all Americans continuing the fight to achieve equality for all. The Town of Los Altos Hills wants to extend its tremendous gratitude to Black Americans for all they have done and for the many future contributions they will make in our community and for our country.

Emergency Management Report

The Town staff, LAHCFD and Purissima Water have been monitoring the inclement weather that has been rolling through Santa Clara County. Emergency Manager Bebee from the District has been attending briefings with allied agencies through the County Office of Emergency Management (OEM). This information is shared with our internal Town teams. There has been little to no impact from the storms that has been reported within the Town. Please remember to sign up for alerts and warnings through the ALERT SCC and Town Nixle

PG&E Readies Resources, Crews Ahead of Storms in Northern and Central California

The National Weather Service has issued alerts, watches, and warnings for parts of the PG&E service area. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, PG&E’s Weather Team has created a Storm Outage Prediction Model that uses real-time weather forecasts, past data, and system knowledge to predict where and when storms will be most severe.

PG&E urges customers to prepare and stay safe this winter.

If an outage happens, PG&E customers can find real-time updates through the online Outage Center, including status updates on inspections, repairs, and estimated restoration times. Daily updates on storm response and power restoration will be available on PG&E Currents. Below are a series of Storm Safety Tips that PG&E has provided to best help residents prepare:

  1. Never Touch Fallen Wires: If you see a fallen power line, assume it is live and very dangerous. Do not touch or move it—keep children and pets away. Report it immediately by calling 9-1-1 and then PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.
  2. Use Generators Safely: Customers with backup generators should have them installed by a licensed electrician in a well-ventilated area. Improperly installed generators can be very dangerous for both customers and power crews. If using a portable generator, make sure it is in a well-ventilated space.
  3. Use Flashlights, Not Candles: During a power outage, use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles to reduce the fire risk. Keep extra batteries handy. If you must use candles, keep them away from curtains, lampshades, pets, and small children. Never leave candles unattended.
  4. Have a Backup Phone: If your phone needs electricity to work (such as a cordless phone or answering machine), have a regular telephone or cell phone ready as a backup. A portable charger can help keep your phone running.
  5. Store Clean Drinking Water and Ice: Freeze plastic containers filled with water to make ice blocks for your refrigerator/freezer to help prevent food from spoiling.
  6. Secure Outdoor Furniture: Strong winds can blow lawn chairs and other outdoor items into power lines.
  7. Turn Off Appliances: If the power goes out, unplug or turn off electrical appliances to prevent circuit overloads and fire hazards when power returns. Leave one lamp on to signal when power is restored.
  8. Clean Up Safely: After the storm, clean up carefully. Never touch fallen wires, and always call 8-1-1 or visit 811express.com at least two full business days before digging to have underground utilities marked.

2025 Los Altos Hills Lid Flip Audit Report

GreenWaste recently released its 2025 Lid Flip Audit Report for the Town of Los Altos Hills. This audit checked contamination in randomly chosen residential and commercial accounts and focused on curbside accounts looking for contamination in all three waste streams: Mixed Compostables, Recycling, and Yard Waste. If Contamination was found, an "Oops Tag!" was placed on the cart to show the type of contamination. The back of the tag included a small sorting guide and a notes section to help residents learn proper disposal.

The total number of lid flips was 237. Of these, 6 were commercial and 231 residential. Overall, the Town had an impressive contamination level of about less than 8% which equates to about 17 "Opps Tags" being issued overall. This signified an overall low contamination level for the Town. A job well done by our residents in properly sorting their compostables, recyclables, and yard wastes!
